Looking at AsiaOne out of bewildering curiosity (most likely attributed to slight boredom), I noticed a poll that asked, "Do you think that 'racial purity' should be preserved?" Options were: (a) yes, (b) no, and (c) I don't know, and it linked to this article
LAST Saturday, this newspaper carried several comments from readers on racism in Singapore. One of them, Mr Desmond Loi Chin Wee, I surmise, would not take kindly to Tiger Woods. The champion golfer calls himself a Cablinasian, a reference to his Caucasian, Black, Indian and Asian background - and is married to a Nordic blonde, to boot.
Quite astonishingly, Mr Loi asserted matter-of-factly that 'racial purity should be maintained so that bloodlines remain untainted and undiluted'.
The 21-year-old then inveighed against what can only be called miscegenation, saying: 'I would not marry someone of another race. Nor would I allow my children to. If we allow our races' bloodlines to be mixed, we will lose our distinctive features and cultures. Same-race marriage should be encouraged to maintain racial purity.'
You'd think that people like him would be in the minority. Well, guess what folks, there are more ignoramuses like him on the loose as the results above show.

i started out with this recipe but i thought the sugar content was insane.
so this is my version:
Ingredients
* 1/2 red cabbage sliced thin - i used the 4mm disc on my cuisinart
* 1 medium onion sliced thin
* 1 can chickpeas, rinsed
* several small red potatoes, sliced thin but a little thicker than the other stuff
* 1 tbsp unrefined or brown sugar
* 1 1/2 balsamic (or apple cider) vinegar
* 1 tsp salt, freshly ground pepper
* 2 tbsp butter chopped (or use olive oil to keep it vegan)
Method
Grease the dish with olive oil. Arrange the potato slices in a single layer on the bottom. In a bowl, mix the cabbage, onions and chickpeas together with the sugar, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Distribute the chopped butter evenly on top. Bake at 375-400F for about 45-60 mins, stirring twice during the cooking (but try to do it without disturbing the potato layer).
i think this would be good with some sliced carrot, and possibly some ground lamb. In that case, i'd also add chopped fresh dill. and perhaps serve with a bit of sour cream on top.

clouded monitor lizard . . . i would have backed away when it got closer to me if i had known! :P www.asiaone.com/singapore/monstrous-monitor-lizard-feasts...
Family : VARANIDAE
Species : Varanus nebulosus
Size (snout to vent) : 60 cm
Size (total length) : 1.5 metres
This is a medium-sized monitor which can reach 1.5 metres in total length, but specimens of this size are uncommon. Similar in appearance to the Malayan Water Monitor Varanus salvator, it is distinguished by the position of the nostrils which lie mid-way between the eye and snout.
Its colouration comprises yellow spots on a brown-grey base. This mainly terrestrial species can be found in habitats as diverse as scrubland and rainforest, but is generally encountered as it digs amongst leaf litter searching for beetles and other insects. It may also be spotted clinging high up on tree trunks or exploring tree holes: its sharp claws make it an excellent climber.
This species occurs in Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Java and Sumatra.

Saviour - born without his forelegs, but was adopted, cared for, and loved all the same.
---
Among the pet owners spotted there was 50-year-old Michael Tan, owner of a five-month-old mongrel which was born without its two front legs.
"Every living thing should be given a chance, he's no less than a regular dog," said Mr Tan, who works in sales.
He adopted the puppy, which he named Saviour, from the SPCA when it was about 10 days old.
In order to help Saviour get around, he handcrafted a mobility aid using plastic pipes and wheels.
Mr Tan said: "The frame has been enlarged five or six times, as Saviour outgrows it every two to three weeks."
From June last year till this July, the SPCA has helped 1,383 animals find a home through its adoption programme.

This fascinates me. Like to see how they harness energy to power equipment. I think it's creative!
Apparently, there are plans to tap solar power for energy to power things beyond light.
SINGAPORE - The Housing & Development Board (HDB) has awarded a tender to Sunseap, a solar system developer, to lease three mega-watt-peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for another 80 HDB residential blocks at Singapore's first eco-town in Punggol.
Under the solar leasing model, Sunseap will design, finance, install, operate and maintain the solar PV systems. Installation works for the second phase is scheduled to complete by 2014.
The increased competition in the local market and cheaper prices of solar PV cells globally have resulted in a lower government capital outlay. The Government funds a small percentage of the initial capital outlay as an incentive to kick start the solar leasing programme. The initial capital outlay provided to the contractors is necessary as the current payback for solar remains long (about 20 years).

Mr Zeng says: "When we travel around the world, we base our works on the culture in each different country we go to."
One of the craftsmen, Mr Chen Gang, 47, says he is motivated by the positive response from people who view the lanterns.
"The physical work involved in this business is very difficult, but it's worth it, seeing everyone's joy at the end. You have to love it to do it," he says.
Mr Chen, who has been crafting lanterns since he was 20 years old, says working in Singapore's humid weather has taken some getting used to.
But he adds: "Even though it's tough to make so many lanterns in such conditions, Chinatown will look beautiful with thousands of well-made lanterns strung up along the streets."

No more bottle trees, but new park retains old charm
By MELISSA LIN
THE STRAITS TIMES Mar 02, 2015
A new leisure park where visitors can go fishing or prawning round the clock has opened on the site of the former Bottle Tree Park in Yishun.
Called Orto, which means garden in Italian, the park is about the size of seven football fields.
Attractions there include a fishing pond, 10 ponds for prawning, and four eateries, including Thai BBQ restaurant Mookata.
A trampoline park, a futsal pitch and a paintball field will be added to the park by its grand opening in June.
Located at 81 Lorong Chencharu, the park was opened to the public on Feb 17 and is an eight-minute walk from Khatib MRT station.
It is managed by China-based Fullshare Leisure Group, which spent $8 million and six months to revamp the place. The company secured the site lease last July with a bid of $169,000 a month.
This was more than double the $68,000 bid put in by Bottle Tree, a company that had run a rustic leisure park there since 2006. The park closed on Aug 10 last year when its lease ended.
When Fullshare won the bid, fans of the former Bottle Tree Parkwere initially worried that the place would lose its kampung feel under the new management.
Ms Yen Sim, senior manager of corporate communications and branding at Fullshare, said Orto has "maintained some good attributes" of the former park.
The 100m-by-100m fishing pond, run by Fishing Paradise, is still there, but with cleaner waters. A neighbouring pond, previously overgrown with plants, has been cleared up and converted into a lotus pond, which acts as a natural filter for the water.
The group also spent more than $20,000 buying over 70 per cent of the existing trees from Bottle Tree. These were mostly fruit trees, however, and none of the bottle trees remain.
"They don't survive quite well in Singapore weather. Only a few survived, and they were taken away by the old management," said the group's assistant general manager Samuel Liu.
Parking and entry to the attraction continue to be free.
The tenure of the site is three years, with an option to extend it until April 2020.
There are plans for a fifth restaurant, compared to two in the past. But rentals for businesses operating there are also higher, which means visitors will have to pay more for the activities.
Fishing Paradise owner Edmund Kong, 36, raised prices by 20 per cent after his rent rose by more than half. An hour of fishing now costs $12, up from $10.
"Now that we're open 24 hours, we see more crowds. Previously we closed at 3am," he said.
Despite the higher prices, visitors said they were glad the park retained its relaxed vibe.
"The place is clean and more comfortable," said production operator Nur Sofia Abdullah, 37, who lives near the park.

When SMU School of Information Systems alumnus Eleazar Lim was still a student at SMU, he was literally stalked by the two men who would later become his business partners. Upon hearing about him from friends, they found his photo on Facebook and waited at the SIS lobby until he walked by — and recruited him to be the tech guru for their startup. Together, the three of them set up Sqkii (www.sqkii.com) during their undergraduate years. Sqkii is a mobile web app that incentivised consumers for discovering promotions. Success did not come easily, and the trio battled various challenges to keep the business going.
