40 Giant Smiling Clouds Have Landed In Covent Garden As Part Of A New Art Installation
A pair of LA-based artists have brought their Little Cloud World large-scale pieces to Central London in an exhibit that’s the first of its kind since 2021. Thanks to Samuel Borkson & Arturo Sandoval III – FriendsWithYou, you’ll be treated to the sight of 40 inflatable clouds smiling away at you when you head into the Market Building in search of a trinket or bite to eat.
This Sabian cymbal was part of Arturo Sandoval's timbales kit.
Interestingly, if you look up "timables" at Wikipedia, there is a photo of Arturo!

Trumpeter and bandleader Arturo Sandoval has been on the front-lines playing the keeping the rich musical traditions of his native Cuba to music fans all over the world. Arturo has fused and played a music that’s a combination of Afro-Cuban, Be-Bop, and other world musical influences that has allowed him to be one of the most recognizable and original voices of the trumpet.
Born November 6th, 1949 in Artrmisa, Cuba, Arturo began his roots as a classical trumpet player while studying music at the Cuban National School of Arts. As a teen he developed a love and passion for jazz music. He heard lot of jazz music and decided at a young age that he wanted to pursue music.
It was a chance meeting with the late trumpeter and bandleader Dizzy Gillespie while he was visiting Cuba, that the young Arturo developed a deep and powerful friendship with the musician that lasted until his death. He hails Dizzy as “his spiritual father and musical mentor.” Gillespie even invited Arturo to play in The United Nations Orchestra in which he was allowed to travel overseas. It was in 1990 while touring with Dizzy that he defected to the US while he was performing in Rome. Arturo requested political asylum and was then assisted by then Vice-President Dan Quayle, to help him relocate to Miami. In 1999 he became an American citizen where in addition to him playing around the world, he became a professor at Florida International University.
In addition to him being a well accomplished musician, Arturo’s music and compositions have been featured in many motion pictures such as “Havana,” “The Mambo Kings,” and “The Perez Family.” HBO Pictures produced and released the critically-acclaimed movie of his life: “For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story,” starring Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan.
“A Time for Love” is trumpeter Arturo Sandoval’s debut recording for Concord Records. Sandoval play the music of Cole Porter, Astor Pizazolla, and Charlie Chaplin. Special guests include Chris Botti, Kenny Barron, and Monica Mancini.

Arturo Sandoval is a jazz trumpeter and pianist. He was born in Artemisa, in the newest renamed Artemisa Province, Cuba. Sandoval, while still in Cuba, was influenced by jazz legends Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie, finally meeting Dizzy later in 1977. Gillespie promptly became a mentor and colleague, playing with Arturo in concerts in Europe and Cuba and later featuring him in The United Nations Orchestra. Sandoval defected to the United States of America in Spain, while touring with Gillespie in 1990, and became a naturalized citizen in 1999.
Sandoval's life was the subject of the 2000 TV film For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, starring Andy García. He currently resides in Calabasas, California.

The small lights in the backdrop made some cool bokeh at f/2.8. There was probably a good 30 feet between the clarinet and the bacground curtain.

Before the Arturo Sandoval concert I was able to shoot some closeups of a few of the instruments. Here are two parts of a bass clarinet at f/2.8 with some sweet bokeh.
(I couldn't get a decent shot of the bell....dangit. Could've made a nice triptych)
I got to see Arturo Sandoval perform at the 103.1 WLOQ Latin Jazz Festival! Managed to get a front row spot, and snapped quite a few photos. This is easily my best shot of the evening, taken when I was at the foot of the stage towards the end of the show.
As a trumpet player myself, getting to see this legend in person was a huge treat. Being so close was just as amazing and made for some great photo opportunities. Best of all was the price to see the show: free!
My D7000 performed admirably given the challenging lighting conditions. The concert was outdoors and the lighting was far from perfect up on the tiny stage, but even at ISO1600, the D7K churned out sharp and clean photos.

Arturo Sandoval's Jazz Big Band kicked off the VMF's 2011 concert season. The very enjoyable concert was well-attended with some 600 people in one of the big halls at the Ventura Fairgrounds, Saturday night 02.13.11.
He's a 5-time Grammy winner, and when you see him on stage, it's easy to undersand why. He's phenomenal musician, and a great bandleader. He played trumpet, flugelhorn, piano, timbales, and sang, but my favorite piece was when he scatted How High the Moon, doing solos on various instruments while air-playing them. Killer!

I just want to give my thanks for the special invitation that I got from film composer, arranger, songwriter, and singer Edy Lan and his wife Lore Lan. This music production - in my humble opinion – is one of the most important contributions to Latin contemporary music. This was a private listening party at the AMC Dolby theater in Tampa for an instrumental album that Edy co-produced arranged with the Prague Symphonic Orchestra for Sergio Vallin (the Guitar Player of Mexican Rock pop band Maná). This album, Microsinfonias, features artist like Carlos Santana, Steve Vai, Juan Luis Guerra and Alejandro Sanz among others. I predict that this album, mixed with Dolby Atmos technology, could win a Grammy this year. This is an extraordinary blend of classical music and Latin pop music.
