How do I do this??
Minute amounts of water, windfall samples - organic and mineral - are collected from the very landscape depicted within each picture - and chemically bonded with the film over 9 to 24 months. The result: a developed film and unedited, printed images that are somewhere between a classic photograph and a totally abstract image, depicting the interaction between fundamental chemical elements present at each place & time, representing a more visceral and literal experience of being present in landscapes in a constant state of natural or unnatural flux.

Another Virginia Art Education Conference has come and gone, and I’ve got a renewed appreciation and love for not just my profession, but for Harrisonburg, Virginia. It’s been a long time since I’ve last been there, and while it’s not nearly as artsy as Richmond (where we had the conference last year), it’s got a genuinely friendly warmth and historic charm, not to mention some amazing places to eat. I didn’t do any workshops or presentations this time around, and preferred instead to check out what other art educators had to offer, much of which was very inspiring - a highlight being artist Steve Prince’s incredibly moving keynote presentation (third photo). My good friend of over thirty years, @emscottart’s “Get To Work” talk was highly motivating as well, and it was so great to watch someone I consider a brother, deliver such an awesome talk. Another highlight was being able to sell lots of my work at the Artisans Market, which I posted about over at @splotchmonsterisland, and meet some wonderful people. I’m so grateful that the organizers of this conference recognize that many of us art teachers are also artists and crafters, and gave us a platform and an opportunity to get our stuff out there in the world. I also found a Greenberry’s Coffee Co, which has a very special, personal significance in that @krisloyaart and I would go to the one that used to be in Leesburg every weekend, when we lived there, and split a blueberry scone between the two of us, over a coffee. Luckily, the one on the JMU campus still serves the exact same, incredible scones, which I made a point to get both Friday and Saturday morning. Anyway, I learned so much and ate too much and had so much fun over the past several days, and it’s hard to believe it’s over already - it all went by way too quickly. Yesterday I was invited out to pay a visit to @waysonjones’ studio. I first met Wayson at a solo exhibit I had in DC in 2017, where he bought one of my pieces. Having Wayson buy one of my works was truly a high compliment, as I learned he’s an art legend of sorts in the DC area, and it was incredibly encouraging. During COVID lockdown we traded some smaller paintings through the mail, but I never actually got to hang out with Wayson until yesterday. I’ve followed and kept in touch with him through Instagram, and always loved whatever work he’d occasionally post about. To see it in person, and be surrounded by it is a whole other thing. I had such a good time, as we talked about art, music, education, life, death, and everything in between, and I ended up breaking down and buying one of his pieces, as it reminded me of @krisloyaart. It’s amazing how color, and even texture can evoke certain feelings and emotions, and I’m so glad to have the little painting now hanging in my home. After a couple of hours that quickly passed by, I had to get home to beat the heavy rains and flooding projected to occur throughout the DMV, but if I could have stayed longer, I gladly would have. The closing reception for Visible Audio Landscapes is officially a wrap, and what a night it was! So many wonderful faces and friends showed up in support to @artsoundlanguage to pack the house Saturday night - it was quite amazing and unexpected, and lots of paintings sold! A huge thanks goes out to PJ, who runs ASL, for helping to make this happen, to @tristanxwelch, @tangent_universes, and @secretwilderness, for being a part of this project and sharing their music with us all, and to everyone who came out to this closing event. Yesterday afternoon, I had a delightful time teaching a Splotch Monster-making workshop to a dozen wonderful participants of all ages at the Faith Chapel Gathering Place in Lucketts, Virginia. First we worked on creating paint splotches, and letting them sit out to dry for a while, followed by some observational sketching from realistic animal figurines. Afterwards, we did a mystery splotch postcard challenge, where participants collaborated with me by getting a randomly selected postcard with a paint splotch. The paint splotches had to be turned into Splotch Monsters, which were then written about on the other side of the paper, in postcard format. If they had some time, folks could also work on their dried paint splotches. This very historic church building was such a beautiful and ideal place to hold an art workshop, and I’m so grateful to @lagoarthurstudio for inviting me to give it a try.
