After a couple of weeks working on customizing a birdhouse for the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy, it’s finally finished. I specifically chose to work on an owl house because it’s size and shape allowed me to paint it in the abstract style I’m currently exploring. After taking some of it apart, sanding, gessoing, painting, scraping, and varnishing it, I reassembled the house as it originally was. I was going for a more rustic look by using a subtractive process, applying acrylic paint, scraping some off, and reapplying more paint over the course of a few days. I wanted the house to blend in with nature while also taking on the presence of a unique and functional object of art. This was a fun challenge and I’m grateful to have been asked to participate! @krisloyaart is working on one as well, and we’re looking forward to the Wine For Wildlife event in late March, when this work will be available for auction. Big congrats to @annerulethompson on her solo art exhibit at @king.street.coffee! I can’t remember the last time I saw Anne, who started out teaching art in Loudoun with me in 2001, and it was so good to finally see her and her amazing work in person at one of my favorite old Leesburg haunts. I’ve seen a lot of great little art exhibits at this wonderful space, but Anne’s work really elevated the presence of the place, and was perfect for the holiday season. It was also great to catch up with some other colleagues and friends who I haven’t seen in quite some time, and I simply couldn’t go home without purchasing one of Anne’s pieces - one of which first grabbed my attention online a little while back, and one that could actually fit on my walls. I ended up finding the best spot for it to hang, right by the new painting I bought from my friend Jeff, from his recent exhibit at @artsoundlanguage - they seem to compliment each other so well, and are the first pieces of art people will see when they walk through my front door. How do I do this??
Minute amounts of water, windfall samples - organic and mineral - are collected from the very landscape depicted within each picture - and chemically bonded with the film over 12 months.
.
The result:
A nature-disrupted film process that creates unedited images that are inbetween a classic photograph and a totally abstract image, depicting the interaction between fundamental chemical elements present at each place & time, representing a more visceral and literal experience of being present in landscapes in a constant state of natural or unnatural flux.
