Allensworth town site, Central Valley, California.
In August 1908 Colonel Allen Allensworth and four other settlers established a town founded, financed and governed by African Americans. Their dream of developing an abundant and thriving community stemmed directly from a strong belief in programs that allowed blacks to help themselves create better lives. By 1910 Allensworth’s success was the focus of many national newspaper articles praising the town and its inhabitants.
An unavoidable set of circumstances made it impossible for the residents of this tiny town located 30 miles north of Bakersfield to achieve their founders’ dreams over the long term. But the town did remain home to a handful of families and individuals throughout the 20th century, and true to the courage and resolve of its founders, the town has survived and persevered, earning the well-deserved title “The town that refused to die.”
In 1974 California State Parks purchased land within the historical townsite of Allensworth, and it became Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park.

The State Library and Archives of Florida is the central repository for the archives of state government for the state of Florida. It is located at the R.A. Gray Building on 500 South Bronough Street in Tallahassee, Florida, Florida's capital.
Mandated by state law, the Florida State Archives is assigned to collect, preserve, and make available for research the historically significant records of Florida. It also stores and makes available private manuscripts and correspondence, local government records, photographs, maps, film clips, and materials that complement the official state records and Florida history.
Many photos from the Florida Photographic Collection are used frequently for articles on Wikipedia and assist users in describing events in Florida history. A selection of archival items from the State Library and Archives are available through the digital outreach program Florida Memory.
The State Library and Archives of Florida was a library of humble beginnings in the year 1845. Shortly after its admission as a state, the legislature began to realize the vital and crucial need to preserve, protect, and collect documents about the history of Florida. During that same legislative meeting, a statute was enacted naming the "Secretary of State" responsible for the care, collection, organization, and display of all "books and maps belonging to the state be collected together (Florida's 'State' Library, 1909). It was also said in the statute that all such documents be cataloged as thoroughly as possible. However, this task was neglected, and as a result, the library and archives suffered (Florida's 'State' Library, 1909).
According to the Florida Historical Society's article during the administration of Dr. Jno. L. Crawford, "a space in the upper corridor of the Capitol was partitioned off and furnished with shelving, and a large number of the (apparently) most valuable of the books, maps, etc., was deposited there; and many such occupied shelves are in the office of the Secretary" (Florida's 'State' Library, 1909). However, when the Capital was remodeled in 1902, the commissioners intended to create space to accommodate the growing library but failed to do so. H. Clay Crawford, Secretary of State at the time, placed shelving on the either side of the basement walls and moved several books unarranged and uncatalogued where they were left in the dusty damp air. It is undetermined just how many documents of historical value lay untouched and neglected in the basement of the State Library, and it was not until some sixty years later that the library flourished as a historical point or reference for its patrons.
The State Library would prosper under William Thomas (W.T.) Cash. Cash had been a teacher and experience working in the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate. He wrote several articles and books about Florida history. He would be appointed to be State Librarian in 1927. At this time the State Library was housed in the basement of the Capital building. Later in 1949, it would be moved to the Florida Supreme Court building once construction was complete. Cash would help grow the collection from 1,500 uncatalogued volumes to over 50,000 volumes, with a particular interest in rare books and volumes. He would eventually retire from the State Library in 1951.
The State Librarian of Florida is Amy L. Johnson, appointed in 2015. Previous State Librarians were Cecil Beach, 1971- 1977; Barratt Wilkins, 1977-2003; and Judith A. Ring, 2003-2015.

As part of The Heritage Weekend, the Chantry Chapel on the bridge leaving Wakefield was open today. I've passed it many times over the years but have never been inside and always wondered what it looked like. Today we visited and weren't disappointed: the stained glass windows are beautifully ornate and very intricately detailed.
Its history is interesting too: in medieval times priests were employed here to say prayers and sing for the soul of the chapel's founder as well as for travellers and victims of violence on long journeys, which is why they were usually located on the major roads into or out of cities.
They were abolished during the Reformation in the 1540s and many were either demolished or sold off. One reason the Chantry Chapel in Wakefield has survived is because it was built into the structure of the bridge. During the Victorian era, there were plans to knock this building down and bring it to ground level but the Vicar of Wakefield at the time secured its transfer to the Church of England and it was restored. Most of what you can see above ground is Victorian. It was completely rebuilt with some extra details and embellieshments added, including new windows. Originally, all the windows were meant to contain stained glass but funding ran out.

2015 Yanshui Beehive Rockets Festival

Articles about my photography have appeared in the English photo-magazine Outdoor Photography and the German photo-magazine FotoHits. The articles can be found at
Sarcophaga carnaria or the common flesh fly is a European species of flesh fly. Only males can be identified with certainty, and then only by examining genitalia. Lavae mostly feed on Earthworms. Adults are attracted to rotting meat and faeces.
The picture has been made with magnification factor 6 and f/13 using a Canon 7D, a Canon MP-E 65 mm f/2.8 and a Canon 2x teleconvertor. It is a single picture and has been made in our garden, while the fly was alive and kicking. The large version of the picture can be found at
Sarcophaga is a genus of true flies, the type of the flesh-fly family (Sarcophagidae). This genus occurs essentially worldwide. These flies are generally well-sized and of a greyish color; like many of their relatives, the typical patterns are lengthwise darker stripes on the thorax and dark and light square dots on the abdomen. Many have conspicuous red compound eyes. These are set further apart in females than in males; the females are also larger on average. As typical for this family, it is almost impossible to tell the species apart from their outward appearance, and many can only be reliably identified by microscopic examination of the males' genitalia (source Wikipedia).
This "Camel Rock" is one of the famous natural landmarks of Cappadocia in Turkey, often featured in travel articles or posters. Compare it against the 2 adjacent camel pics in my photostream, the resemblance to the animal in terms of form and colour is quite apparent!
After 35 years, Nikon has finally given us a lens that we can compare against the Canon 24mm f/1.4 series.
Aspects compared:
1. Long distance center IQ
2. Long distance corner IQ
3. Close distance center IQ
4. Close distance corner IQ
5. Front and rear bokeh differences w.r.t. center frame vs. corner frame
6. Bokeh highlight shapes
7. Vignetting at both close and infinity distances
8. Field of view changes at close distances
Conclusion of comparison: You decide! If you want my personal opinion, ask me by emailing me, which is my flickr username @hotmail.com or by commenting here.
Please leave comments if you found this test useful or if you have any questions or other thoughts.
Technical Info:
Camera: Canon 5D Mark II
Support: Gitzo GT2541 6x Carbon and Manfrotto 405 geared head.
Release: Mode 2 LV, slow remote release
About the Test Results:
* Sharpness: All sharpness tests were re-focused (10x magnified LV) and shot twice and the best 1 of 2 was chosen.
* Correctness: Camera and subject positions were never changed in any test. Only lenses were exchanged/refocused. Images are not sharpened. RAW conversion through DPP. Saturation increased in most shots to highlight CA. Manual/constant WB per set.
* Similarity of images: Even on their own manufacturer's bodies, Canon and Nikon lenses can produce similar colours when the RAWs are processed equally by the same software. So it is not a surprise that these two lenses produce very similar images since they were on the same sensor. Matched-manual white balance also brings them closer.
What is Compared: It goes without saying that this is an optics vs. optics comparison, which is also the reason why both were tested on the same sensor. It's not possible to do this on different sensors/bodies (even if they're from the same manufacturer) because one day when you upgrade your body, the performance can change. Because of the way this test is done, you always know how these two lenses compare to each other, regardless of the body.
Corrections: The field of view comparison description in the test states that the 24G focuses closer than the 24LII. This is not correct according to what's marked on the lenses. The closest marked focusing distance of both lenses are the same. However, the 24G might allow slightly closer focus than this (cannot remember for certain).

This castle has it’s rumours. There are the stories about the man in the jeep and his accomplice on the scooter watching over this castle.
The castle was built in 1860 by an marquis who lived in the town and it still is in Royal’s hands. Apparently, the owners cannot agree about a plan to preserve the heritage and therefore the place is left abandoned without having anybody to care for it.

Budapest, Jewish Quarter
Erzsébetváros
Built in 1833, neo-classical style
Architect: Pollack Mihály en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mih%C3%A1ly_Pollack
Ebben az épületben működött a Horn Ede (Einhorn Ignác) által alapított Izraelita Magyarító Egylet.
In this building was founded the first Hungarian Association of Israelites by Ede Horn (Ignatz Einhorn).
About Ede Horn: jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/5484-einhorn-ignatz-eduar...
Ede Horn, Hungarian preacher and political economist; born at Vágh-Ujhely Sept. 25, 1825; died at Budapest Nov. 2, 1875. He was educated at the Talmud schools at Neutra, Presburg, and Prague, and at the University of Budapest. In the last-named city he began his journalistic career, contributing to the "Pester Zeitung," the "Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums," and "Der Orient."
In 1847 he began to preach in the temple of the new community of Alt-Ofen, and he also edited the first Judæo-Hungarian year-book. A year later appeared his "Zur Judenfrage in Ungarn," Alt-Ofen, 1848. In April, 1848, he founded at Budapest the weekly "Der Ungarische Israelit," which gave the first impulse toward the formation of the Reform congregation there. Einhorn became the first preacher of this new congregation.
In religion as in politics Einhorn was a decided liberal. He took part in the Hungarian struggle for liberty, first as a revolutionary speaker at Budapest, and then as an army chaplain at Komorn, a position to which he had been appointed by General Klapka. After the capitulation of Vilagos he returned home; but not feeling secure there, he went to Vienna and then to Prague. Still pursued by the police, he finally went to Leipsic (March, 1850), where he remained for two years. There he published under the pseudonym of "Eduard Horn".
Among others he wrote in 1851 "Die Revolution und die Juden in Ungarn." His "Ludwig Kossuth" (1851), which was immediately confiscated and led to the publisher's imprisonment for two years, again directed the attention of the Austrian police to Einhorn. To escape extradition to Austria and consequent imprisonment, he went to Brussels, and thence, destitute of all resources, to Amsterdam.
Returning to Brussels, he devoted himself to the study of the French and English languages.
At the time of the Paris Exposition of 1856 he went to the French capital as correspondent of several German periodicals. There Michel Chevalier secured him for the "Journal des Débats." In 1863 he became one of the founders of "L'Avenir National." From Paris he directed a persistent literary war against the policy of the Austrian government. King Victor Emmanuel appointed him a Knight of the Order of Saint Maurice and Saint Lazarus. In 1867 he published "L'Economie Politique Avant les Physiocrates," which was crowned with the "Grand Prix" of the French Academy.
In 1869 Einhorn was enabled to return to Hungary. He was elected a member of the Reichstag from Presburg, and some years later from the most populous district of the capital. He founded the "Neue Freie Lloyd," but it had a short existence. In Judaism, in the struggle between the Orthodox and Reform parties, which was conducted with great bitterness, he sided with the former, although he had been a liberal theologian. He was appointed assistant secretary of commerce, but had held this post for six months only when he died.
A Király utcai Magyarító Egylet
„A 21-es, ez a Pollack Mihály által tervezett, 1833-ben épült, kopott épület, nem arról nevezetes, hogy az első világháború idején ebben volt a Rusznyák pongyolaáruház, Wald Gyula meg kézimunkákat árult itt a boltjában, nem beszélve az udvarbeli gyorsfotográfus enyvesképeiről. 1936-ban Szántóné a legújabb párizsi kalapmodellekkel szolgált. A földszint históriája nem olyan érdekes. Az emeleten történt érdemes esemény 1844-ben. A zsidók intézményesen igyekeztek elősegíteni a beolvadást, s megalapították Magyarító Egyletüket. Itt. Ebben a házban. Képviselővé választották, s ő lett a magyar kormány első zsidó tagja, kereskedelmi államtitkár – sajnos, a halála esztendejében. Most vár és reménykedik.”

Horn Ede, rabbi, a politikus, a nemzetgazdász, 48-as, garibaldista (1825-1875):
"Einhorn Ignác, aki később Horn Edére változtatta nevét, Vágújhelyen született 1825. szeptember 25-én. Eredetileg rabbinak tanult.
A Tisza Kálmán vezette ellenzékhez csatlakozott.

The Chinstrap Penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) is a species of penguin which is found in the South Sandwich Islands, Antarctica, Deception Island, the South Orkneys, South Shetland, South Georgia, Bouvet Island and Balleny. Their name derives from the narrow black band under their heads which makes it appear as if they are wearing black helmets, making them one of the most easily identified types of penguin. They live on barren islands and during winter congregate on large icebergs of the sub-Antarctic region and the Antarctic Peninsula; however, they require solid, snow-free ground for nesting. The chinstrap penguin's primary predator is the leopard seal. The 16 million chinstrap penguins have typical lifespans of 15–23 years.
The (long-tailed) Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua) is a penguin species in the genus Pygoscelis, most closely associated with the Adélie penguin (P. adeliae) and the Chinstrap penguin (P. antarcticus). The first scientific description was made in 1781 by Johann Reinhold Forster with a reference point of the Falkland Islands. They call in a variety of ways, but the most frequently heard is a loud trumpeting which is emitted with its head thrown back. The IUCN Red List lists the Gentoo as Near Threatened, due to a rapid decline in some key populations which is believed to be driving a moderate overall decline in the species population. (wikipedia)
This area was just teeming with Gentoo, Chinstrap, Adelie Penguins, with some Kings thrown in for good measure. It was a remarkable sight.
