Fiction: February, 1988. Not that Christina "Chris" Cruz couldn't take care of herself (after all, she was rather tall and had a black belt in karate!), but the lithe and lovely young woman was one of many of magician Brad Byrd's assistants often referred to as "The Chick" without given the respect, notoriety, and/or acknowledgment they deserved for their contributions. Just a paycheck and a "What's your name again, babe (or "sweetheart")?" So as you can imagine, Chris executed an escape of her own one night, making good on her resolve never to return. She vanished a la "Asrah" on stage and in the middle of a performance, leading Brad to search frantically backstage for her...

Fiction: In the world of DRiBBL3, almost everyone who has successfully auditioned and made the team each year is African American, from Minneapolis, single, has a black belt in karate, possessed impeccable skills on the basketball court, is anywhere between the ages of 18 and 30, aspiring to make a name for him/herself in the entertainment industry, eager to see the world...and unfortunately is not immune to racism, bigotry, and stereotype-driven discrimination (from natural hair to names people can't pronounce), no matter how good they are. Laquandria is no different. Or at least, that's what their opponents always think, that they're "all alike". But one night, all that changed when Laquandria, equipped with a first aid kit and certification, returned to rush to the aid of an opponent in trouble!

I decided to reread Frank Herbert's Dune...and vwallah....I see there's a new movie version coming out this month. Anyway my first thought for suit was "Stillsuit" the environmental suits the Fremen use to conserve every bit of body moisture in the desiccated world of Arrakis. They are describes as an osmotic pump that is supplied energy by the wearer's movements. Pumps in the boots and thtoughout the suit use mechanical energy to remove water from exhaled air, sweat, urine and feces. The water is stored in pockets throughout the suit and accessible via a tube in the neck. The Fremen thrive in this desert environment because they are so efficient at reclaiming water. They are masters of their environment, even utilizing the gargantuan sandworms that inhabit Arrakis. Since around 1984 when I read it, I've always wanted to draw the story. David Lynch and all subsequent movies have made a stillsuit pretty much as I always doodled it. Well here's my take on it...pretty similar.

And once our young lady picks it up, a bookshelf metamorphoses into a darkened doorway to a dungeon, causing Alexander Victor and his grandma to enter the outside world...and Ashleigh's immediately in a trance!
Successful in their pursuit for a new initiate, Alexander Victor and his grandma help Ashleigh in a karate uniform and hold her captive in their arms (with Grandma's securing Ashleigh's legs), filling her subconscious with a thousand magic tricks and hundred kata. Fiction: Present day. Since firing his dancer-assistants and hiring his grandmother as his lead assistant and partner-in-crime, our master martial magician Alexander Victor has gone rogue, unafraid to reveal his dark side. Lately, Alexander and his grandma have been snatching attractive young women off the streets and at random, hypnotizing them and turning them into his own sorcerer's apprentices.
One stormy afternoon, a completely drenched and bikini-clad Kristina runs back into the Cave to retrieve her beach ball until Alexander and his grandma grabbed her against her will, quickly inundating her head and heart with a million magic tricks and a hundred karate kata. And as Alexander keeps Kristina in a trance, Grandma Victor helps her in a karate gi and a black belt that she, as the others that were kidnapped, didn't even earn!
Fearing the worst, Kristina's boyfriend and friends run back into the Cave (and away from the rain and wind) to see what happened to her. Before they could find Kristina, she has already vanished! She's gone, along with Alexander and his grandma.

"Late one night, Daphne Cobb, a tall beautiful young woman, enters the car in an immaculate and neatly pressed karate uniform, including a pair of flaring gray trousers and a black belt around her small waist to assert an air of authority and to have everyone know that she means business.

Ms. Cobb wastes no time exchanging kicks, blocks, and punches with the unruly young man, promising to have him kicked off the train. Even In the dead of night.
Once the young man is down and unconscious, Ms. Cobb quickly dives, hides, and vanishes behind a seat, only to emerge from it as a ferocious and deadly 3.6", 370 lb. tiger!
