Hand printed lino cut diasy, with collaged paper and embossed stamps in eggplant ink.

A collage using acrylics on coffee filters with drips of rabbit glue. It didn't work and so I am using it as inspiration for a number of series 1) pastels on wallis sand paper (3 examples shown here) 2) fiber arts needle felting, couching, fused paper and bits of organza subsequently waxed

A voir absolument!

R.PONS gallery 108 rue de la Folie-Méricourt, Paris 11th, is organizing a surprising exhibition. This exhibition mixed, Marianne / Venus de Milo figures, wall illustrations, and desgin inspiration. As a result, you can see the exhibition from the bottom, the top, diagonal... A must to see!

This work was created with the intention to challenge the preconceived notion that detailed portraits are meant to be respected and honoured rather than being part of a destructive process. My idea was initiated through the concept of feminist art movements and researching into artists who create work that highlights womens independence and status. I decided that I wanted to create a work that expressed the female form and the beauty of women. Additionally, I also decided that I wanted to incorporate the issues of societal pressures for women and how destructive they are to us as well as how they influence the way we view ourselves, I accomplished this by partially destroying the oil painting with a vibrant acrylic pour. The colours included in the pour are those included in the oil painting, for example the green tones are reference to the colour of her eyes. The concept was to ‘destroy’ the painting with colours of her face to represent the idea that through societal pressures can result in us developing destructive behaviours towards ourselves.

Autorretrato

Three deep cradle canvases in the process of being papered, sketched and painted.

This is the photo that I first took at Appleton Farms, the first look at this tree and hillside that inspired the painting that I recently finished (see post from March 20). It was late October and we were on a tour of Appleton Farms, to see how cheese is made there. There were other people on the tour, it was cold and windy, and the tour guide was moving us along to the dairy barn. But I liked the look of that tree and hillside, so I took a quick picture. I only had time to capture the idea, but didn't have a chance to really set up the shot. So just to make this into a presentable photo (which later became one of my reference photos), I had to crop out the pile of big black tires just beyond the fence. You can also see a bit of a baby carriage (belonging to another tour participant) in the lower left, which also had to be cropped out. Then I adjusted the composition to make it more pleasing, and I had the photo I wanted. Then to get from the reference photo to the painting, I made other changes that went beyond what is possible with photo editing. I adjusted the composition again because to show more of the top of the tree (which I actually had to invent). I adjusted the whole composition for a square format. And I modified the line of trees in the background. To emphasize the main tree, I eliminated a second tree (on the left) and straightened some of the lines of the fence. This is what it means to create a pleasing photo (art) from a quick snapshot of an event, and what it means to create a painting inspired by (but not a copy of) a photo.

My new friend Kelly beginning her painting. We both cringe as the cheery/eerie music of the ice cream man's truck passes by (again, and again)...
