This is a secret box with a hidden compartment. It had been in my shed for many years until we moved house and now resides in my garage hence the dust and grime which I like..... Along with the old rug and fir cone. It still stores some old hidden coins

Hello my amazing Flickr friends !
Today is a pink or purple day at Color my World Daily. And the theme at Smile on Saturday is carved art pieces. I wish I could tell that I’m very good at carving stuff but unfortunately this not the case. I have no carving talent what os ever… I tried to carve something out of soap once and I almost lost 3 fingers… I’m very clumsy and the situation gets even worst when I manipulate sharp objects…
So for today’s picture we have a small wooden elephant and an exemple of my carving talent. I carved this pencil with my initials (I tried to make a heart but it was way more difficult, so I sticked to straight lines …) all by myself !! The elephant is part of my personal collection of elephants. And if I remember right, it was a gift from my aunt. He is very stubborn and he like to push on things with his trunk… Also he is a drinker so dont let him near your drink or it will disappear in no time ! But other than that he is very smart and funny. He was carved from a very hard wood, which makes him almost unbreakable… After all, he survived in my house for so many years....
I wish you all a beautiful day !! See you later my friends !!
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts!! Stay safe and well!! And see you soon on Flickr !!
Carved from a fallen tree (shown in the other image) An extremely skilled person. For the group Smile on Saturday theme 'Carved Artpieces'
Es sólo un pedazo de una corteza de unos 30 cms, todo un paisaje.
It’s just a piece of a bark of about 30 cms, a whole landscape.

I started carving this sculpture in 1970, while I was working the wood split, I didn't like that at that time, nowadays I don't mind a few cracks, maybe I'm going to finish this piece next summer in my yard.

Dit beeld hakte ik in 1970, terwijl ik bezig was barste het hout, dat vond ik toen niet mooi, tegenwoordig zit ik niet meer met een scheurtje meer of minder, misschien ga ik het van de zomer toch maar afmaken.

Lucky Irish Black Bog Cat
A (supposedly) super lucky Irish bog cat, carved from 100% Irish turf.
Although this cat has been around for approx. 20 years old, I can't say anyone here has ever noticed increased good fortune!
The story goes.... Ireland’s bogland was once home to the much sought after black bog cat which was said to roam the vast bogland near the shores of Lough Neagh.
It was larger than the usual cat and lived on insects and small animals, and was said to bring luck and great wealth and happiness to those whose path it crossed.
Similar stories are told about a large black cat seen in the boglands in midland Ireland, who with its intelligent cunningness always evaded capture.
Looking through the archives and came across this wooden carved cat from one of the carousels that was part of Fête Paradiso, a celebration of vintage French carnival rides, carousels and games - Governors Island, New York, 13 July 2013. I've looked at a lot of carousel cats (here on flickr) and many have a fish in their mouth, I wonder if the red piece was a fish at one time or just a red kitty toy.
And I didn't realize this before I posted but then I started to see carved pieces in my contacts photos and realized this weeks theme for Smile on Saturdays applied, "Carved Artpieces", HSoS
And Happy Caturday!

These hand carved boxes are from the Bavarian region of Germany. The man who did them, said it was becoming a lost art as the younger kids no longer wanted to carry on the tradition. Machine turned ones can still be found in tourist shops, but these were bought almost 40 years ago and I know they are hand carved. I have a couple other pieces too, but they are packed away.
……Well hopefully the photograph is! The headstock Scroll on this Contrabass has no function so in my book it is a carved decorative artistic adornment. There - Ive convinced myself it will qualify for this weeks theme for ‘Smile on Saturday’ - “Carved Artpieces”…….. Music mostly makes me smile so hopefully this mother & son duet will make YOU smile too - youtu.be/IlbloNUSBJ0 - Now they are true Artists!!!! If you don’t have time now then I urge you to listen later. Have a smily W/End, stay locked down and cosy to stay safe and to keep EVERYONE else safe too! A VERY BIG THANK YOU to ALL the key workers who are carrying on to benefit the rest of us - we applaud you all. Alan;-)👏👏👏👏👏

A jacaranda (rosewood) wood carving of the one legged pipe smoking Saci, probably the most popular character in Brazilian folklore. He is known for being an incorrigible prankster, who (as Wikipedia has it) "causes no major harm, but there is no little harm that he won't do."

The 3 portals of the western facade of Notre Dame :

- Last Judgement Portal

Constructed between 1200 and 1220, they are in restoration following the impressive fire of 15 April 2019 which destroyed the cathedral spire, ravaged the interior of the monument and weakened its structure.
Sculptor Jim Menken has been transforming old trees and logs into beautiful works of art since 2003. Inspired by nature, Jim uses his God-given talents, a chainsaw and a few other tools to depict animals, people, objects, etc. as realistically as possible.
