Life is good when we go to a vacation.
In vacation even the bokeh is looking better!
This is the bokeh I saw in Lisbon when I was there in 2012.
This is archive shot reposted.
Have a great day!
The following is the original post in 2012.
If you are short in height (therefore cannot get the view above the fence) and short-sighted like me, you will have this view of the Lisbon at the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara.
A fun shot playing with DoF. I am photo buff who shoots beautiful city view in bokeh!!! :o)
Have a great Tuesday!
Reflection is probably the most surreal thing we can see in the real world?
Repost of picture taken in 2014.
Wish you a great Wednesday!
The following is original story of the post.
We have had so much heavy rain last week and many places including my backyard were flooded. I guess may be even Steveston was under water ..... :o)

More of the reflection abstract in downtown.
There are pictures that can evoke emotions of viewers. There are pictures that can distill emotions. I guess abstracts belong to the second category.

To be very frankly. Until now, I still have no idea what is that bright colour reflection in the water drop?
May be it is the shed in my backyard. This is the water drops macro done in my backyard in 2013.
Would you take a closer look and make a wild guess too? :o)
Have a great evening!
Have you examined and studied your inner micro-universe?
If photography is art of seeing, then philosophy is art of thinking. Philosophy guides us in asking the right questions and reviewing the basic assumptions and working mechanism in our mind.
For example, you may tease the idiot followers of technology that line up in front of the Apple stores. However do you believe that Photoshop and RAW files are going to help you improve your photography? Is this coming from the similar kind of ideology? Do you think you have a critical mind independent of all the mass media and internet brain-wash?
Are you able to doubt or challenge the words of God and/or those from the leaders in the political, religious, academic or scientific fields? The philosophers can give you a hand on this.
This is the galaxy of micro-universe I saw in my backyard.
Have a great philosophical Wednesday!

The tragic and ugly things happened in Paris on black Friday.
We wish courage and beauty will rule over these ugly and evil things in our world. May brightness and light win over darkness.
I took a shot of the last bit of fall colour in my neighbourhood this morning in the drizzles. May peace be with us.

We, photographers, are people who like to study light and textures I think.
This is one example I did in 2014. Just repost of my archive picture.
Wish you all a great day!
The following is origianl story posted.
I am not sure about other photographers. For me, there are many times that I take the shot because I love the light in the scene and not solely due to the interesting subject matter.
I like foggy day not only that fog is similar to snow which will make the background more clean and tidy. Fog has the characteristic to create more diffused light.
The diffused light tames a little bit on the contrast and sometimes reveals a special beauty on the scene. Nowadays most photographers don't worry about about contrast because HDR, tone mapping and many other techniques in digital darkroom can help you creating what you want. In those cases, photography is digital art more than art of seeing.
Have a great Wednesday!
Another shot at the foggy Steveston. I like the diffused light made by the fog that morning.

We have winter coming early this year. Today Greater Vancouver has the first snowing in the area.
Have a great weekend!
This is snowy in 2014.
We had first snow in Vancouver area late last night. Everything is covered by the white powder this morning.
I have a walk in my neighbourhood and again I am shooting simplicity compositions.
Stay warm and have a great weekend my friends!

I have weakness in my eye vision (both physical and photographic), For me it is difficult to see the scene in ultra-wide angle perspective.
Photographers need to organize the space within the frame. When you have wide angle lens, you need to move a lot in order to find a different view and also you need to get really close to your subject.
Sometimes when you shoot architecture and buildings, there is physical limitations that prevent you to get closer to your subject.
I need more practice with my new wide angle zoom 10-24mm,
Happy Sunday!

I love minimalism. But it is not so easy to make a minimalist composition for life I would say.
This is picture taken ain 2013.
Wish you a great Tuesday!
If life is made up of simple things like love and friendship, life is beautiful.
In abstract compositions, we need only simple lines and shapes and it is surprising that they will look interesting and beautiful to me.
This is a scene seen at Telus World of Science near False Creek yesterday.
Happy SUNday!!
Most photographers take the background as the important element in the composition even more than the subject itself. This is not an overstated opinion.
When I took the picture of green maples in Van Dusen, it is the background that contains all the appeal to me in the scene. The green maples are only complimentary to the overall composition I would say.
What is your thought on this?
Have a great Sunday!

I remember I read a photography book. The author said you give him a bag of charcoal and the light, then he can make an interesting picture for you.
The challenge and tall mission of photography is to understand the characteristics of light and make good use of it. There is not something called bad light. There is always something suiting the light available to you. It is not just the light in golden hours can make good pictures for you.
I have a walk in the neighbourhood and play with the light available to me in the morning.
Have a good Sunday!

What is the message of fall to you? The message is laid in the leaves and please read them carefully.
Is it about the change of colour? Or it is about the grace of aging and withering in life?
And we shall not forget the aging in humankind is described as a social problem which causes burden in health care system and hike in taxes. And it is not viewed as a beauty.
Why is it so different between nature and human?
Have a great Sunday!
This is seen at Trout Lake Park Vancouver.
I love simplicity and I love macro. What could be better than it when the two are combined together?
Have a great Wednesday!
This is just repost of archive shot in 2013.
We said photographers have different eyes and they are interested in things that others may not be even looking at.
Sometimes we wonder what they are shooting. So we also said they love colours, tones, textures, lines or whatever. Because we just can’t find the clear subject in the shot!
I think people would say the same thing with my macro ……. :o)

We had only snowfall in Friday night in Vancouver. The snow did not stay very long although the temperature was below freezing in the mornings of Saturday and Sunday.
I feel lucky to capture these artworks done by nature, They are all gone when I had another walk in the Sunday morning.
Wish you a happy Monday and great week ahead!

After adopting photography as my way of seeing, I started to read carefully the patterns, textures, tones (not just colours or brightness but tones are more the combinations of both), shapes, lines and contrast of everything. These are more basic elements of a subject or scene you are going to learn about instead of the history, the name, the location, the stories or whether that is a designated cultural heritage.
What has photography taught you or changed your way of seeing things?
Happy Friday and great weekend!
I tried to catch the last fall leaf around Minoru Park.
I know I will make my Flickr friends bored very soon. I am still going on my “Steveston in bokeh” series.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is one of the historic sites in Steveston Richmond.
Many people may have visited it but you may not be seeing it in bokeh though. ;o)
Thank you for your patience, suggestions and comments.
Have a great Wednesday!

This is buddy bulb seen in my neighbourhood walk.

What are you looking for?
Yes this is the question to you as a photographer.
Are you looking for the perfect sharpness, the well-defined tones, the highest resolution and the greatest range of dynamic range, or the meaning?
Is photography the art of seeing, the art of (wet/digital) darkroom or the art of thinking?
This is candid at local shopping mall.

I experienced the change in the way of seeing after picking up photography as a way of my expression.
I take notice more on the details and I learn that the parts added together is always bigger than the sum as a whole.
When I see a ship, I usually see its details in terms of lines, textures and shapes. I have composition with reference to these elements instead of the concept or the idea about a ship.
Have a great Thursday!
We have foggy days this week and so does Steveston.
I saw the hawk in Boundary Bay and he looks like a wise bird. I consulted him about the art of seeing.
Man: Photography is art of seeing. What is the Tao of seeing?
Hawk: Take a higher viewpoint. Take a transcendental viewpoint. Have the philosophical way of seeing. Don’t look at the superficial qualities of a scene.
Man: What is meant by philosophical?
Hawk: Philosophical is about asking the right questions.
Man: How do I know if I ask the right questions?
Hawk: You won’t know. Just keep asking like what you are doing here!
Man: ?????
Happy Friday and have a great weekend!
We have heavy rain again in Vancouver!! :o(

I am an addict to minimalism.
After the recent snowfalls in Vancouver in the two months, the snow has been frozen into ice. It is so slippery outside. I carefully walk and make a texture and form study on the icy playground.

In the time of pandemic, everything goes back to the basic. People care about food, shelter, hygiene and the relationship with family. You are not able to have face to face contact with your families and friends. You may make use of the online social media now.
In photography we also go back to the basics i.e. the design elements, the composition, the light and the appreciation of forms.
Have a great weekend!

I just come across the words of David Ward, the UK photographer on art of seeing.
“Really seeing is more about an understanding of your subject – sometimes this comes as a revelation – than it is about surfaces and forms.”
Everything has exception. I believe abstract is an exception to this and it is something about surface and forms in essence.
I went back to my abstract mode and had my shot of abstract in Chinatown last week.
Happy Friday and weekend!
Why do we need minimalism?
Because we have too many. Too many redundant choices, too many life options without seeing the essence of things.
For example, when we check our personal messages, we need to check email, voicemail, cellphone text messages, personal blog, Twitter, Facebook and Flickr and may be more ....
Can we just talk face to face or even shall we just keep silent and meditate alone?
I am really addicted to minimalism!
Have a great Friday and great weekend!

I miss the X70. I hope I can keep it! :o(
This is the first picture I posted with X70.
I am happy with its performance.
Of course the user has to get used to shooting with LCD since it does not have a EVF.
Happy Friday!

The task of photographer is finding the light and seeing the light.. The tool of photographer is the lens. Every lens has its unique characteristics and angle of vision.
The 18.5mm (28mm full frame) lens on X70 is a good lens. The AF is fast and the touch screen operation allows you to select focus point quickly.
I have been using 35mm focal length lately and really need to adapt to the wide angle of vision in the 18.5mm on X70.
On my first day of shooting with X70, I only want to complain that the battery life is short and not sufficient for continuous shooting in 4 hours. The user needs to have a spare battery for sure.

I believe most of the Vancouverites or Richmondites will notice that on most of the sunny days, there is always one seagull on top of every lamp post.
The seagull loves to overlook the city. We love to see gulls on top of our city.
I think I have not done minimalism shots for a long time. The blue clear sky is great canvas for that. And this is our Vancouver see gull. :o)

How much do you pay for the metal fence and how much will you pay for the sculpture piece done by Picasso?
They are both arts and why there is such big price difference?
