Looking Close... on Friday: Beads

Our Granddaughter had seen this on a school visit to the Art Gallery. When we went with her & her brothers during the school holidays she was very keen to show us.

I love this but if these beads & sequins are not what is required I can change the photo.

Sinead Davies: The endocrinologist - Professor Katherine Samaras, 2019 - one of the finalists for the Archibald Prize, captured at the Art Gallery of NSW (hand held, low light)

I love the cool elegance, choice of subject and of background objects. Somehow you *feel* her compassion.

Lindy Lee portrait, winner of the 2019 Archibald Prize, and some of the other finalists on either side

The portrait of Lindy Lee (next pic) which won the Archibald was a nice counterbalance to the packers' choice of the portrait of David Wenham (previous pic)

Yaritji Young: Tjala tjukurpa (honey ant story), 2019 - one of the finalists for the Wynne Prize, captured at the Art Gallery of NSW (hand held, low light)

I just love this piece: the colours, the symbols and shapes, the entire composition. And the slathery application of the paint: lush in everything.

The Archibald Prize is awarded by the Trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW for the best portrait 'preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’. It has done so since 1921 from the bequest of J.F. “Archie” Archibald (1856-1919), a trustee of the gallery and founder of “The Bulletin” (then Australia’s premier political magazine).

This exhibition is currently touring the country and was in Launceston for several months. It celebrates the centenary of what has become Australia’s most important and controversial art prize. The exhibition reunites many of the winners and most popular portraits in its history.

Picasso Response (NSWAG, 2019)

I love the stance, the gaze, and the unconscious reflection of the Picasso... Coming round the corner this painting seized my attention too; a closer look & I ask myself: why? I don't know... but it is as it is, and somehow this person expresses that..

Nick Santoro: Hewitts Avenue montage, 2019 (NSWAG)

"Life felt precarious, disorganised and scattered." -- from the painter's notes about this painting, which was selected as a finalist for the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2019.

The more you look the more you see - and I recall that some of the motifs really spoke to me at the time (this was last year). Looking today, the skull, the skeleton, and the guy with the beard & sunnies wearing the hot pink coat and carrying a handbag grabbed my attention first...

The next time I looked, the llama leapt out at me first... I keep wondering what I might put into such a collage for these times? Feels like the answer to this question could be an interesting project...

David Wenham portrait (Archibald Packers' Prize) and other

finalists for the 2019 Archibald Prize, captured at the Art Gallery of NSW (hand held, low light)

I love it that the packers get to give a prize and this portrait of David Wenham is a worthy choice and a nice counterbalance to the portrait of Lindy Lee (next pic) which won the Archibald. (Up close the detail is astonishing - not sure I have a close up but if I do I will add it).

I was lucky enough to take those shots of the tripod. I was asked not to use tripod a few minutes later :( , therefore I took a few other shots of a chair :P

These monumental figures depict the bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of compassion, and Tara, born from Avalokiteshvara's compassionate tears. The image of Tara reflects the Indian feminine ideal, with a sensuous hourglass body with full breast, tapering arms and a soft belly. Avalokiteshvara stands in the flexed tribhanga or triple-bend posture. He wears a short patterned dhoti and ornaments typical of a bodhisattva. Both these deities would have shown the gesture of charity or generosity (varada mudra) with their right hands.

Looking Close... on Friday: Multicoloured Abstract

Powerfully emotive bronze sculpture positioned at the front of the National Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney.

It is one of a pair, the other being The Offerings of Peace. Both by British sculptor Gilbert Bayes (1872 – 1953).

In 1915, after the outbreak of World War I, Bayes submitted to the National Art Gallery a pair of 18 inch bronzed plaster figures entitled Offerings of Peace and Offerings of War and the following year he received the commission to produce large bronze versions to flank the museum's main entrance. They were finished in 1923 and installed in 1926.

Both are allegorical sculptures. War holds a staff, a bundle of swords and broken spear shafts.

This statue stands 4. 2 m in height and weights 6 tonnes.

Kate Gladwell: Yindyamarra: a portrait of Professor Michael McDaniel, 2019 - one of the finalists for the Archibald Prize, captured at the Art Gallery of NSW (hand held, low light)

One of my favourites in this impressive collection of portrait painting. The eyes have it in this portrait and dominate the feeling - to me he has "no side"* - and I remember the last person I met who had the same feeling eyes (on an island off Qld, a conversation about the relative absence of monarch butterflies). Also I love the twinkle Kate has captured in his face :-)

* 'no side' in the sense of this (although it's weak compared to how we use/ mean it) "Definition of no side to. British, informal. —used to say that someone is not arrogant or pretentious He was a war hero and yet there was no side to him."
