South Beach Miami Art Deco District - 2012

 

Oscar’s Hotel and Café Bar is a beautiful Art Deco, boutique hotel in the heart of the Victorian provincial city of Ballarat. Located at 18 Doveton Street, it is the perfect base when sightseeing around the city, as it is so close to many beautiful and historical Ballarat buildings.

 

Oscar’s, when it was first built in the 1860s was originally the Criterion Hotel, a popular venue in the gold rush days. However, as the Gold Rush dwindled and was replaced with wealth generated through grazing and agriculture in the surrounding area, so the Criterion Hotel changed.

 

In the 1930s, it was completely refurbished inside. It is this interior with its Streamline Moderne liner style staircase, acid etched frosted glass windows and skyscraper style fireplaces that you see today after a recent restoration.

 

On a personal note as someone who has stayed there, Oscar’s offers a stylish and comforatable hotel experience at a reasonable price. It also has great food and excellent service.

 

Melbourne based street artist Rone (Tyrone Wright) used the decaying glory of the 1933 Harry Norris designed Streamline Moderne mansion, Burnham Beeches in the Dandenong Ranges' Sherbrooke, between March the 6th and April 22nd to create an immersive hybrid art space for his latest installation exhibition; "Empire".

 

"Empire" combined a mixture of many different elements including art, sound, light, scent, found objects, botanic designs, objects from nature and music especially composed for the project by Nick Batterham. The Burnham Beeches project re-imagines and re-interprets the spirit of one of Victoria’s landmark mansions, seldom seen by the public and not accessed since the mid 1980s. According to Rone - Empire website; "viewers are invited to consider what remains - the unseen cultural, social, artistic and spiritual heritage which produces intangible meaning."

 

Rone was invited by the current owner of Burnham Beeches, restaurateur Shannon Bennett, to exhibit "Empire" during a six week interim period before renovations commence to convert the heritage listed mansion into a select six star hotel.

 

Rone initially imagined the mansion to be in a state of dereliction, but found instead that it was a stripped back blank canvas for him to create his own version of how he thought it should look. Therefore, almost all the decay is in fact of Rone's creation from grasses in the Games Room which 'grow' next to a rotting billiards table, to the damp patches, water staining and smoke damage on the ceilings. Nests of leaves fill some spaces, whilst tree branches and in one case an entire avenue of boughs sprout from walls and ceilings. Especially designed Art Deco wallpaper created in Rone's studio has been installed on the walls before being distressed and damaged. The rooms have been adorned with furnishings and objects that might once have graced the twelve original rooms of Burnham Beeches: bulbulous club sofas, half round Art Deco tables, tarnished silverware and their canteen, mirrored smoke stands of chrome and Bakelite, glass lamps, English dinner services, a glass drinks trolley, photos of people long forgotten in time, walnut veneer dressing tables reflecting the installation sometimes in triplicate, old wire beadsteads, luggage, shelves of books, an Underwood typewriter, a John Broadwood and Sons of London grand piano and even a Kriesler radiogramme. All these objects were then covered in a thick sheet or light sprinkling of 'dust' made of many different things including coffee grinds and talcum powder, creating a sensation for the senses. Burnham Beeches resonated with a ghostly sense of its former grandeur, with a whiff of bittersweet romance.

 

Throughout the twelve rooms, magnificent and beautifully haunting floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall portraits of Australian actress Lily Sullivan, star of the Foxtel re-make of Picnic at Hanging Rock, appear. Larger than life, each portrait is created in different colours, helping to create seasonal shifts as you move from room to room.

 

Although all the rooms are amazing for many different reasons, there are two major standouts. The Study features walls of books covered with a portrait of Lily Sullivan, and the entire room is partially submerged in a lake of black water with the occasional red oak leaf floating across its glassy surface. The Dining Room features two long tables covered in a Miss Havisham like feast of a trove of dinner table objects from silverware and glassware to empty oyster shells and vases of grasses and feathers.

 

The Dining Room installation I found especially confronting. In 1982, I visited Burnham Beeches when it was a smart and select hotel and had Devonshire tea in the dining room at a table alongside the full length windows overlooking the terraces below. I was shocked to see a room I remember appointed with thick carpets and tables covered in gleaming silver and white napery, strewn with dust and leaves, and adorned with Miss Havisham's feast of found dining objects.

 

I feel very honoured and privileged to be amongst the far too few people fortunate enough to have seen Rone's "Empire", as like the seasons, it is ephemeral, and it will already have been dismantled. Rone's idea is that, like his street art, things he creates don't last forever, and that made the project exciting. I hope that my photographs do justice to, and adequately share as much as is possible of this amazing installation with you.

 

South Beach Miami Art Deco District - 2012

When I look at this, I can't help thinking of the hall leading to the domain of the Wizard of Oz - except that it's not green, an' all.. And there's no Cowardly Lion - no Tin Man or Scarecrow - no Dorothy or Toto..

 

Just a long, empty hall with ornate, polished floors and fixtures and a fertile imagination...

This is the grand entryway of the Service Life Building in downtown Omaha. My office is in this building, and I see this beautiful art deco interior five days a week. It never gets old.

Mayo Hotel:

This Chicago School (Sullivanesque) style building has eighteen floors. Its massive base of two-story Doric columns and entablature support fourteen floors in a ‘shaft’ of single double-hung windows with the center and corner pairs adorned with false terra cotta balconies. The building’s crown is two levels of stone with arcaded windows separated by false pillars, capped by a dentiled cornice. This building is also significant for its association with the history and growth of the city. Pioneer Tulsa brothers, John D. and Cass A. Mayo, built the hotel in 1925, patterning it after the Plaza in New York City. Their goals were elegance of decor and fine service. Ceiling fans in each room and Tulsa’s first running ice water made the hotel a haven from summer heat. Once the tallest building in Oklahoma, the hotel, which originally had 600 rooms, is an example of early Tulsa’s optimistic attitude concerning its growth potential.

 

The Mayo served as a residence for J. Paul Getty for several years, and the John D. Mayo family lived in the hotel from 1941 until Mayo’s death in 1972. The Mayo and the Mincks-Adams Hotels are the only large hotels that survive from this early period of Tulsa’s growth.

 

The Mayo Hotel was listed in the National Register on June 27, 1980. It was listed under National Register Criterion C, and its NRIS number is 80003303.

  

Gillette-Tyrrell Building:

This building is another significant example of Tulsa’s Art Deco Style of architecture. Completed in 1930, this building was originally designed for thirteen floors but only three were completed. Its appearance, both inside and outside, is unique in comparison to the few buildings of this style remaining in Tulsa.

 

In 1930, the building’s architect described it as having several types of architecture faintly suggested in the building and its decoration. "But, as a whole, the type is distinctly Modern," he said. Its style is now recognized as the early phase of Art Deco. The Italian, Spanish, and American Indian derived motifs on the exterior terra cotta work with its vertical emphasis and colorful Zigzag decorations combine with its interior decorations to provide a classic example of most of the basic elements of the Art Deco style.

 

The original, richly decorated lobby remains today. It contains colorful tile wainscoting, ornate plaster coffered ceilings, mosaic tile floors, detailed cast iron railings, and etched glass windows and light fixtures The ornate exterior terra cotta work is in good condition and is virtually unaltered, although the South canopy was demolished in 2000.

 

The Gillette-Tyrell Building was listed in the National Register on January 21, 1982. It was listed under National Register Criterion C, and its NRIS number is 82003703.

Apart from the many adversaries which Mumbaikar's go through .. Goddess Lakshmi has always showered blessings to each Mumbaikar's in abundance and has made sure that the citizens stands tall and keep prospering.

The Empire State Building, New York City.

 

The Empire State Building is a 102-story landmark Art Deco skyscraper in New York City, United States, at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. It is 1,250 ft (381 meters) tall. Its name is derived from the nickname for New York, the Empire State. It stood as the world's tallest building for more than 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, the Empire State Building once again became the tallest building in New York City.

 

The Empire State Building has been named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The building and its street floor interior are designated landmarks of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, and confirmed by the New York City Board of Estimate. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. In 2007, it was ranked number one on the List of America's Favorite Architecture according to the AIA. The building is owned and managed by W&H Properties. The Empire State Building is currently the third tallest skyscraper in the United States (after the Willis Tower and Trump International Hotel and Tower, both in Chicago), and the 15th tallest in the world. It is also the fourth tallest freestanding structure in the Americas. The Empire State Building is currently undergoing a $550 million renovation, with $120 million utilized in an effort to transform the building into a more energy efficient and eco-friendly structure. - Source

Located at 25 Bridge Street, the Korumburra Masonic Hall is a tribute to how large and influential a centre this little town once was. With a concrete Art Deco facade built in the late 1920s or early 1930s in front of two earlier gabled halls, the Masonic Hall has a large street frontage opposite the former post office and diagonally across from Korumburra’s Austral Hotel on the crest of a hill, commanding a great deal of attention.

 

The Art Deco facade decoratively, is extremely stripped back and the only piece of ornamentation identifying it as a Masonic hall are a sign stating so and the symbol of Masonic tools located above two of the four entranceways. The building is very Inter-War Stripped Classical in style because of the limited decoration, its symmetrical façade, the division of the frontage into vertical bays indicating classical origin and the element of the Art Deco style in its decoration. This Art Deco detailing is perhaps the building’s main attraction as a continuous frieze across the stepped pediment features geometric patterns, fans and swirls so evocative of the Jazz Age. Two of the double doors once used have been filled in, but the two remaining are subtly recessed.

 

Korumburra is a medium-sized dairy and farming town in country Victoria, located on the South Gippsland Highway, 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. Surrounded by rolling green hills, the town has a population of a little over 4,000 people. Korumburra has built itself on coal mining (after the discovery of a coal seam in 1870), local forestry and dairy farming. Whilst the coal seam has been used up, farming in the area still thrives and a great deal of dairy produce is created from the area. The post office in the area opened on the 1st of September in 1884, and moved to the township on the railway survey line on the 1st of November 1889, the existing office being renamed Glentress. The steam railway connecting it with Melbourne arrived in 1891. Whilst the train line has long since operating commercially, it has found a new life as the popular tourist railway the South Gippsland Railway which operates a heritage railway service between the major country centre of Leongatha and the small market town of Nyora.

I had been out for a couple of hours on Saturday morning, in some places people would stop, and others they would not. Then almost home and I had this one last opportunity for a photo, and this young woman was happy to give a moment for a photo.

Omaha Union Station (1931) was one of the first Art Deco train station in the United States. It closed for rail service in the 1970s and now houses the Durham Museum. Omaha's other passenger train station, the Italianate Burlington Station (1898) also closed in 1974 when a new Amtrak station was built a block or so to the east. The Burlington Station just underwent a major renovation, see this photo set and info.

44 Bridge Street later named ‘Booth House” after the owners Frederick H. Booth & Sons, housed several offices and wool brokers. The building was constructed in 1937-38 in the functionalist style to the design of Brewster and Manderson.

An Art-Deco entrance, probably from somewhere between the 1920s and '40s on an 1860s building in downtown Providence, RI. (South Main Street). This was originally the entrance to Fain's Department Store, which is no longer, and probably something else before that in the earlier 1900s; just recently some of the space was remodeled and became a nice coffee shop. It opened this year. Neat name, huh? :)

The former State Government offices building in Ballarat's Camp Street was designed by Chief Government Architect Percy Everett (1888 - 1967) and opened in 1941 to house the local state government offices and courthouse. A commemorative plaque announcing that building was opened by the then Premier of Victoria, the Honourable A. A. Dunstan M. L.A. appears to the right of the main entranceway. Created of clinker brick and concrete in Art Deco style, it is remarkably similar in design to the Russell Street Police Station in Melbourne (also designed by Percy Everett), and a good example of the era. It features Functionalist Moderne windows and doors, hexagonal Art Deco lamps and very stripped back detailing. The main entranceway is crowned by Dieu et Mon Droit emblem on the King George VI which is painted and gilt.

 

It's curious that this beautiful building sits in Camp Street given its contrasting architectural style to the otherwise Victorian-influenced street. The building faces Sturt Street rather than Camp Street, and has been beautifully maintained.

 

The State Government Offices are now located in Mair Street, and the city's court house has moved to the corner of Albert and Dana Streets. This building is now part of the University of Ballarat's Arts Academy.

Essendon Technical School (1939), the State Accident Insurance Office in Melbourne (1941), the William Angliss Food Trades in Melbourne(1941), the Russel Street Police Headquarters in Melbourne (1942–1943), F.G.Scholes Block (Wards) Fa Hospital in Fairfield(1949) and the RMIT Building 5&9 in Melbourne(1938).

A wonderful example of art deco in Tulsa

 

The Adams Hotel is located on a lot in the heart of the Central Business District of Tulsa. Built by I. S. Mincks to capitalize on the 1928 International Petroleum Exposition, the building has thirteen floors, with a full basement and penthouse. A 1935 liquidation sale gave it new owners and a new name: the Adams Hotel.

 

The Adams facade is widely recognized as an excellent example of glazed terra-cotta veneering. Produced by the Northwestern Terra Cotta Company, the terra cotta pastel blues and reds are still quite noticeable, and the individual tile units are sound, with tight mortar joints. The architectural style of the facade is eclectic, in the mood of the 1893 to 1917 period when architects felt free to use any and all decorative motifs as they saw fit. Its highly ornate facade is an imaginative combination of Gothic, Italian Renaissance, and Baroque decorations. Terra cotta is also used extensively in the interior of the building in the lobby, coffee shop, and stairwell.

 

The hotel was listed in the National Register on November 7, 1978, under National Register Criterion C, and its NRIS number is 78002273.

The Art Deco facade decoratively, is extremely stripped back and the only piece of ornamentation identifying it as a Masonic hall are a sign stating so and the symbol of Masonic tools located above two of the four entranceways. The building is very Inter-War Stripped Classical in style because of the limited decoration, its symmetrical façade, the division of the frontage into vertical bays indicating classical origin and the element of the Art Deco style in its decoration. This Art Deco detailing is perhaps the building’s main attraction as a continuous frieze across the stepped pediment features geometric patterns, fans and swirls so evocative of the Jazz Age. Two of the double doors once used have been filled in, but the two remaining are subtly recessed.

 

Korumburra is a medium-sized dairy and farming town in country Victoria, located on the South Gippsland Highway, 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. Surrounded by rolling green hills, the town has a population of a little over 4,000 people. Korumburra has built itself on coal mining (after the discovery of a coal seam in 1870), local forestry and dairy farming. Whilst the coal seam has been used up, farming in the area still thrives and a great deal of dairy produce is created from the area. The post office in the area opened on the 1st of September in 1884, and moved to the township on the railway survey line on the 1st of November 1889, the existing office being renamed Glentress. The steam railway connecting it with Melbourne arrived in 1891. Whilst the train line has long since operating commercially, it has found a new life as the popular tourist railway the South Gippsland Railway which operates a heritage railway service between the major country centre of Leongatha and the small market town of Nyora.

 

Melbourne based street artist Rone (Tyrone Wright) used the decaying glory of the 1933 Harry Norris designed Streamline Moderne mansion, Burnham Beeches in the Dandenong Ranges' Sherbrooke, between March the 6th and April 22nd to create an immersive hybrid art space for his latest installation exhibition; "Empire".

 

"Empire" combined a mixture of many different elements including art, sound, light, scent, found objects, botanic designs, objects from nature and music especially composed for the project by Nick Batterham. The Burnham Beeches project re-imagines and re-interprets the spirit of one of Victoria’s landmark mansions, seldom seen by the public and not accessed since the mid 1980s. According to Rone - Empire website; "viewers are invited to consider what remains - the unseen cultural, social, artistic and spiritual heritage which produces intangible meaning."

 

Rone was invited by the current owner of Burnham Beeches, restaurateur Shannon Bennett, to exhibit "Empire" during a six week interim period before renovations commence to convert the heritage listed mansion into a select six star hotel.

 

Rone initially imagined the mansion to be in a state of dereliction, but found instead that it was a stripped back blank canvas for him to create his own version of how he thought it should look. Therefore, almost all the decay is in fact of Rone's creation from grasses in the Games Room which 'grow' next to a rotting billiards table, to the damp patches, water staining and smoke damage on the ceilings. Nests of leaves fill some spaces, whilst tree branches and in one case an entire avenue of boughs sprout from walls and ceilings. Especially designed Art Deco wallpaper created in Rone's studio has been installed on the walls before being distressed and damaged. The rooms have been adorned with furnishings and objects that might once have graced the twelve original rooms of Burnham Beeches: bulbulous club sofas, half round Art Deco tables, tarnished silverware and their canteen, mirrored smoke stands of chrome and Bakelite, glass lamps, English dinner services, a glass drinks trolley, photos of people long forgotten in time, walnut veneer dressing tables reflecting the installation sometimes in triplicate, old wire beadsteads, luggage, shelves of books, an Underwood typewriter, a John Broadwood and Sons of London grand piano and even a Kriesler radiogramme. All these objects were then covered in a thick sheet or light sprinkling of 'dust' made of many different things including coffee grinds and talcum powder, creating a sensation for the senses. Burnham Beeches resonated with a ghostly sense of its former grandeur, with a whiff of bittersweet romance.

 

Throughout the twelve rooms, magnificent and beautifully haunting floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall portraits of Australian actress Lily Sullivan, star of the Foxtel re-make of Picnic at Hanging Rock, appear. Larger than life, each portrait is created in different colours, helping to create seasonal shifts as you move from room to room.

 

Although all the rooms are amazing for many different reasons, there are two major standouts. The Study features walls of books covered with a portrait of Lily Sullivan, and the entire room is partially submerged in a lake of black water with the occasional red oak leaf floating across its glassy surface. The Dining Room features two long tables covered in a Miss Havisham like feast of a trove of dinner table objects from silverware and glassware to empty oyster shells and vases of grasses and feathers.

 

The Dining Room installation I found especially confronting. In 1982, I visited Burnham Beeches when it was a smart and select hotel and had Devonshire tea in the dining room at a table alongside the full length windows overlooking the terraces below. I was shocked to see a room I remember appointed with thick carpets and tables covered in gleaming silver and white napery, strewn with dust and leaves, and adorned with Miss Havisham's feast of found dining objects.

 

I feel very honoured and privileged to be amongst the far too few people fortunate enough to have seen Rone's "Empire", as like the seasons, it is ephemeral, and it will already have been dismantled. Rone's idea is that, like his street art, things he creates don't last forever, and that made the project exciting. I hope that my photographs do justice to, and adequately share as much as is possible of this amazing installation with you.

This is evident in the wide entranceway to the lodge on Bruce Street. This section, constructed in the 1930s also features a flat roof which is another common feature of Streamline Moderne buildings. The gable on the left hand corner of the Bruce Street facade is in fact the original 1912 lodge with a more modern facade. The Functionalist metal windows installed beneath the gable are accentuated by the addition of ornamental buttresses which are capped with neat stone carvings. The entrance itself is flanked by classically inspired columns with Ionic capitals.

 

Leongatha is a town in the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges, South Gippsland Shire, Victoria, Australia, located 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. The town is the civic, commercial, industrial, religious, educational and sporting centre of the region. The Murray Goulburn Co-operative Co. Limited, is a farmers' co-operative which trades in Australia under the Devondale label, and has a dairy processing plant just north of the town producing milk-based products for Australian and overseas markets. First settlement of the area by Europeans occurred in 1845. The Post Office opened as Koorooman on 1 October 1887 and renamed Leongatha in 1891 when a township was established on the arrival of the railway. The Daffodil Festival is held annually in September. Competitions are held and many daffodil varieties are on display. A garden competition is also held and there are many beautiful examples throughout the provincial town. The South Gippsland Railway runs historical diesel locomotives and railcars between the market and dairy towns of Nyora and Leongatha, passing through Korumburra.

Oscar’s Hotel and Café Bar is a beautiful Art Deco, boutique hotel in the heart of the Victorian provincial city of Ballarat. Located at 18 Doveton Street, it is the perfect base when sightseeing around the city, as it is so close to many beautiful and historical Ballarat buildings.

 

Oscar’s, when it was first built in the 1860s was originally the Criterion Hotel, a popular venue in the gold rush days. However, as the Gold Rush dwindled and was replaced with wealth generated through grazing and agriculture in the surrounding area, so the Criterion Hotel changed.

 

In the 1930s, it was completely refurbished inside. It is this interior with its Streamline Moderne liner style staircase, acid etched frosted glass windows and skyscraper style fireplaces that you see today after a recent restoration.

 

On a personal note as someone who has stayed there, Oscar’s offers a stylish and comforatable hotel experience at a reasonable price. It also has great food and excellent service.

The Bruin Theatre opened in 1936, designed by famous theater designer S. Charles Lee this wonderful theatre has been a jewel in Westwood Village all these years, after the Mann theater chain pulled out from running the Bruin and Fox Westwood (across the street) last year it was feared that both theatre's would go dark but thanks the the Regency theater chain who has come to the rescue of both these great theatre's they will remain open and continue showing first run movies
