Federal forces men have been patrolling the streets of Rio since Friday (28) and this is the first weekend with troops on the streets. It is a hope of safer days in the city.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for November 9th is “poppies”, in honour of Armistice Day and Veterans Day, both of which are celebrated on the 11th of November every year. This red poppy I actually photographed in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens in Melbourne a year ago, when whilst I visited there, I came across beds full of beautiful poppies in all kinds of colours. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile, and that it helps you reflect and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our peace, prosperity and stability, and those who fight today to protect us still. Let us also hope that conflicts around the world will come to a swift conclusion, not least of all in Ukraine and in Gaza.
Armistice Day or Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. It falls on the 11th of November every year. Remembrance Day is marked at eleven o’clock (the time that the armistice was declared) with a minute’s silence to honour the fallen. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries.
Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November the 11th, for honouring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
Today we are remembering all those who lost their lives in World War 1 and 100 years since the war ended. Those brave men and women fought in battles I can't even begin to imagine and they deserve our respect.
Last year the stunning poppies that were at the Tower of London in the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red art exhibition were on tour and the Poppy Wave installation was in Plymouth. I ventured out with my camera to capture this stunning and poignant display. So here's one of the photos in the series I took.
As an ex-member of The Royal Navy, I'm glad I served my country and did my bit, I have the utmost respect for all members of our armed forces, past and present and the demanding job they do.

Veterans are the embodiment of courage and sacrifice, having selflessly served our nation with honor and dedication.
On Veterans Day, we express our deepest gratitude to these heroes, for they have not only served in uniform but continue to inspire us with their strength, resilience, and unwavering love for our country.
This photo is my recreation of the famous V-J Day in Times Square photo. Cla Jones and I worked for a few hours getting the pose right. She had the idea better thought out than I did. Then just as I was going to start adjusting the WL, my BD crashed. Thankfully I got a "test pic" in just before.
Anyway, this photo and others will be on display at the 17th Annual SL Veteran’s Tribute for 2023. The tribute will be open from November 1st through November 15th!

V-J Day in Times Square is a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt that portrays a U.S. Navy sailor embracing and kissing a total stranger[1]—a dental assistant—on Victory over Japan Day ("V-J Day")[2] in New York City's Times Square on August 14, 1945. The photograph was published a week later in Life magazine, among many photographs of celebrations around the United States that were presented in a 12-page section entitled "Victory Celebrations".

This weekend just gone saw the annual Armed Forces Day on Plymouth Hoe. As I'm ex Royal Navy I always like to go down for the day and support our troops.
Unfortunately this year, I'm working weekends so couldn't make it, but on Friday evening I ventured up to The Hoe for sunset and got a few shots of the static helicopter displays they had ready for the next day.
The Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma is a four-bladed, twin-engined medium transport/utility helicopter. The Puma was originally built by Sud Aviation of France, and continued to be made by Aérospatiale. Its first flight was in 1965 and since then The Puma has seen combat in a range of theatres by a number of different operators; significant operations include the Gulf War, the South African Border War, the Portuguese Colonial War, the Yugoslav Wars, the Lebanese Civil War, the Iraq War, and the Falklands War.

Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of Anzac, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
This year is the 100 year anniversary.
My father served in World War II as a Rat of Tobruk. He joined under his name, Leonard John Mills but was passed out medically unfit after initial training. A few weeks later he joined in his cousin's name, Joseph and served his country for the rest of the war. We have two discharge papers for the same man in different names. He served 3 years 102 days including 2 years 271 days active service as a Rat of Tobruk in WWII. They held off Rommel's German/Italian army.
