What would a trip to Arizona be without a Roadrunner??
This is our first visit to Ash Canyon since Mary Jo has been gone. It was purchased by the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory in 2019 and many improvements made to the location. So wonderful to see her dream live on.
When you hear "Cajon Pass," you usually think of Union Pacific and Santa Fe/BNSF. Ironically, about the only decent image of a train I have on Cajon is a 1988 photo of a Southern Pacific train, taken on a trip to Arizona.
Be that what it may, SP's Mojave Flyer ascends the grade near Canyon Siding in July 1988.
Only a couple of miles from the Phoenix airport can you be transported to the wild west in just a matter of minutes. In the Tonto National Forest, located in the city of Mesa, Arizona, you can discover the Salt River wild horses.
The horses roam freely between the Tonto National Forest and the Indian communities of Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. But neither the Indian communities, nor the U.S. Forest Service claim the horses.
They are horses without a home and without controversy.
Are they feral pests that destroy natural resources or are they wild horses to be treasured and worthy of federal protection?
That controversy was finally resolved after many years when on December 31, 2017 the Arizona Department of Agriculture and U.S. Forest Service finalized an agreement to protect the herd of horses.
When in Arizona be sure to make your way out to the Salt River to capture (with memories and photographs) these magnificent creatures and a bit of the old wild west!
Thanks guys for all your views, comments and favs!
Happy Travels!

An engine start video I took of Sentimental Journey a B-17G WWII Bomber at the CAF Hangar at Falcon Field in Mesa Arizona.
Be sure to turn up your speakers to hear the fantastic sound of the 1,200-hp Wright Cyclone radial engine starting.
If you have never heard one of these aircraft start then you are in for a real treat!
Video taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital Camera and Canon EF 17-40mm F/4 L zoom lens. Sound was recorded from the on camera speaker. No editing this was right out of the camera.
I took this left rear view of a new friends new Red Jewel Tintcoat 426 HP 2010 Camaro SS with a Canon 5D Mark II camera and Canon 85mm F/1.2 II L lens near the Superstition Mountains in Arizona.

What would a trip to Arizona be without atleast one photo of Cacti.
Cacti are perennial and grow as trees, shrubs, or vines. Most species are terrestrial, but there are also many epiphytic species, especially in the tribes Rhipsalideae and Hylocereeae. In most species, except for the sub-family Pereskioideae (see image), the leaves are greatly or entirely reduced. The leaves may also be tiny and deciduous as can be seen on new shoots of Opuntia. Spines grown by the cacti are actually modified leaves; the stems (the green "pads" of many cacti) have also evolved to photosynthesize. The study of when spines grow and how they can be used to tell the cactus' age is called acanthochronology.

When in Portal Arizona be sure to as the folks at the store how you can find "Jasper's". Don't miss it.
It's a birding paradise.

This message is kind of ironic considering the Dragon-Bravo Fire of July 2025. "Be Careful with Fire" old NPS sign at the North Rim Campground, Grand Canyon National Park. August 1978. Scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

I just had to post another shot of this Male Baboon eating the pineapple and showing his huge teeth at the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona.
Be sure to click on All Sizes in the menu above to see his amazing teeth! I know one thing I would NOT want to be bitten by those huge chompers!!!
ISO 1600 Noise reduction off. I used photoshop to clean up some debris on this arm.

This solar panel on a parking machine in San Francisco gave me pause- if this place, which seems cloudy about 80% of the time, can have solar powered devices, shouldn't Arizona be generating electricity by the boat load?
As the wind lightly blew the leaves slowly fell to the ground. What a beautiful day to spend in the Aspen Trees on the White Mountain Apache Reservation in Arizona

On the way to Arizona, be flew with this Airbus, mostly over Florida. It slowly was drifting away to the Northeast.
I'm still undeniably in favor of the official state bird of Arizona be changed to the Greater Roadrunner, but can fully understand why the Cactus Wren was chosen back in 1931.
Aside from personal opinion, I was sitting at the edge of a basin listening to a riparian zone wake up. The variety of wildlife making their morning ruckus is something I could fall asleep to at night – I should record that sometime. Out of nowhere, 12 feet away, a Roadrunner (RR) slips and stumbles out of thick bush into a patch of sunlight. Noticing me without a care, RR turns back to sun, separates main wings, and fluffs its poofy plumage to dry. I watch for a little bit then ask RR if I can take a photograph. It looks at me asif I'm a talking tree and gives the nod of approval – *Snap* – Not even phased.
This is one big cactus we came across in Arizona.
Be sure to check out my other picture where I
have taken a shot of the flowers.
Oct. 7, 2024: Stop in major Route 66 community of Seligman, Arizona. Be careful about the many employee puns when ordering food at the Snow Cap Drive-In. The lady offered me a half spoon or a whole (hole) spoon for my cup of ice cream. Rt66/2024/35
