We stopped here for a break. I went wandering with the camera.
(It appears that my Cinestill developer had had too many rolls of film developed with it. Both this and the previous roll were significantly under-developed. Cinestill one-step developer has its advantages, but I plan to go back to my Kodak D76.)

For our anniversary a month ago, we decided to check out some brews and wines west of Rochester. We ended the day with dinner and a brew at Stoneyard Brewing Company in Brockport, New York. One could get there via the Barge Canal if one so desired. stoneyardbrewingcompany.com/
We sat on their deck by the canal.

I was looking through my iphoto album trying to find something and found this image from late May -- I am holding a giant replica of an Argus C-3 camera. This is from the Argus Museum and I was returning it to them after it was loaned for the Argus camera meeting earlier that month. Scary!!
Back at Stony Brook State Park a few days later. I had a few shots left on the Argus so I finished up with it before starting walking.
Downstream from here the gorge soon flattens out. I do not know the story behind this short stretch of concrete and its embedded rocks.

Switching back to the Argus C3 for a bit. It is a good camera but quite different from the Yashica-D; it takes some getting used to.

... at least at close quarters. For larger range, it doesn't matter; zone focusing is good enough.
From what I read, it is possible to open the little round lid on the top of the body that gives access to the ranging adjustment screws, but I think I'll just leave it as it is, as the adjustment appears to be non-trivial to a high degree..
So, in summary:
- The times are more or less accurate
- There is no light leak
- The rangefinder works and is reasonably accurate where it counts most (between 90 cm and 2 metres)
- There is no haze in the lens
Which means: this is as good as it gets in terms of sharpness, contrast and colour rendering, at least for my specimen of an Argus C3 and Cintar lens.
The next test will be one using slow B&W film, which likely is closest to the material that camera was originally designed to work with.

This is my husband's fathers old camera...an Argus C3. It's known as "The Brick" because it is soooooo heavy! I found out on Wikipedia the C3 was mass-produced from 1939 to 1966. I don't know much about it at all but it's very special to us, especially since my hubbie is into photography too and his Dad is no longer with us. My father in-law was in the Navy and took this around on his voyages to capture the sights. I think my hubbie knows which country's he took this too but I can't remember right now.
We bought some 35mm film for it but haven't taken it for a spin yet. I can't wait to see what the results will be. You should look through the viewfinder...you can barely see!! It's so tiny and look cloudy or something...I don't know if that's because it's old or what. I just can't imagine how he composed images through this.
Doesn't it look cool? I left it in the original case on purpose just with the lid off so you could see it. The case is SO worn.
A very special family treasure.

Heading home.
The Seabreeze Water Tower has been a camera magnet for me over the years. It was a big, bright, red and white checkerboard when the folks moved us into the Rochester area in 1958. Now it is a quite lovely, and much less obtrusive, sky blue. But I really liked the checkerboard.
The Argus and I went for a late afternoon walk around the neighborhood. It was a lovely time for light and shadow.

I already knew that the clip and latch lock (seen here) that is supposed to hold the camera back shut no longer works properly so it can pop open at any time.
What I didn't know then but found out the hard way is that once a film is loaded, the increased pressure on the film plate will overwhelm the feeble force that the clip still has and just push the back open.
The sellotape solution seemed an abomination to me. Also, it would have to be a long strip that extends from the back to the front and therefore might damage the leatherette, so that just is not on. A camera deserves respect. Any camera, also an Argus. Luckily, I found a woven elastic band that fits tightly over the camera body and reliably keeps the back shut.
And for a MacGyver-type solution, it doesn't look bad, even if I do say so myself.
I bet the next thing I will find out is that there is a light leak all around the camera back.

The Argus C3 rangefinder camera was introduced by Argus in 1939. It was a minor revision of the Argus C2, adding flash sync sockets to the side of the camera. However this model became Argus's runaway success story, staying in production through 1966 with only minor changes. Fondly known as "the Brick," the camera brought 35mm rangefinder photography down to a price affordable by amateurs who could not dream of owning a Leica or Contax. (Camera Wiki)
This camera is from my collection and in working order.
