Musikpavillon Kurmuschel in Sassnitz. Ulrich Müther, 1987. by Michael Schmieder

Zum Wasser hin fällt die Küste bei der Stadt Sassnitz steil ab. Unterhalb einer hohen Befestigungsmauer liegt am östlichen Ende der Strandpromenade der Kurplatz mit seinem expressiv geformten Musikpavillon, der umgangssprachlich auch "Kurmuschel" genannt wird.

Die bildhafte Form des 1987 fertiggestellten Pavillons entwarf der Architekt Dietmar Kuntzsch.

Ulrich Müther berechnete die Schalenkonstruktion und führte mit dem Ingenieur Otto Patzelt die Bauarbeiten aus. Für das aus sieben sich nach oben auffächernden Schalen bestehende, auskragende Dach wurde zunächst ein Gitter aus gebogenen Armierungseisen hergestellt. Auf das daran befestigte Drahtnetz applizierte man den Spritzbeton. Sowohl die Schalen als auch die beiden flankierenden Lagerräume erhielten einen weißen Verputz. Am Bau waren neben verschiedenen Betrieben aus der Region auch Studenten der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee beteiligt.

Die ursprünglich geplante Gesamtanlage wurde nie vollständig realisiert; davon zeugen noch heute die unpassend kleinbürgerlich wirkenden Holzspaliere um den Platz.

Im Sommer finden in der Kurmuschel regelmäßig Konzerte und andere kulturelle Veranstaltungen statt. Die symbolgeladene Betonform mit weißem Anstrich ist ein Glanzlicht an der Sassnitzer Hafenpromenade.
