Interesting layout. Two spurs plus another against the wall bench behind me and a bench along the window in front. However all the Macs were pushed close together at the end furthest from the teacher's desk with no real off-computer working space. Instead, roughly half the benching (nearest the front of the class was empty and presumably free for jotter/book work.

PC lab in fairly standard layout. Computers round the edge, desk space in the middle. It felt a bit crowded but there was an air-conditioning unit! In my opinion - these should be fitted as standard in computer labs.

The class were using Sibelius and the girl on the left was having a bit of a problem. Together the two girls quietly and effectively worked out the solution between them. Unfortunately due to the digital lag on my camera, I didn't quite capture the girl on the right leaning across and pointing at the appropriate bits on the other girl's screen.

When I saw on the programme for the Apple RTC meeting that Jim Knight, Minister of State for Schools and Learners, was going to speak to us, I wasn't filled with enthusiasm. I assumed he'd be talking about English initiatives and the English education system. However, he turned out to be very interesting and spoke very sensibly (and with personal experience) about Web 2.0 and the stupidity of trying to block everything. A blog post will follow!

Also... is it just me, or is Jim Knight a dead ringer for Elvis Costello?

I was sitting beside someone before lunch and told him about a website one of my students had shown meThe Free Mac Classroom. He happened to be speaking later that day about useful software for the classroom and used that website as one of his examples. It further turned out that the creator of the page was one of the Apple RTC people and was actually sitting in the room. In fact I had been sitting beside Simon at dinner the night before but hadn't connected the Simon I was sitting beside with the Simon who created the website. Serendipity or synchronicity or something else?

As the saying goes, it's a small world but I wouldn't like to paint it.

What do you think? All four fully engaged?

Traveling down to the Apple RTC Managers' Meeting in Newcasle. Browsing the web and eating breakfast. This is the way to travel.

...Of course, if Panorama is to be believed (see "Who's afraid of wireless networks?") perhaps the bacon butty was cooked using the wi-fi signal.

Not a great picure since it was snapped through the bus window but thought it was interesting to see these two billboards side by side. Apparently, Steve Jobs said something like Apple wouldn't go into the phone business unless they could do something special and different. I think they have done that and now existing phone companies are trying to show that they are cool too ...but they don't quite get it. Go large on the fine print and you see, "Tracks accessible whilst you remain subscribed". What? So music you have paid for becomes un-playable when your subscription ends?

We returned to the same Chinese restaurant we visited the last time we came to an Apple RTC meeting in Newcastle. I love Chinese meals!

I'd forgotten that I took almost exactly the same picture last time. :-)

This is a closer view of a stunning mural on the half landing on the stair up to the music department.

Inspired by hb19 and photos such as yes, this goes there..., but failing to pull it off! However, it is close enough to make me want to experiment some more. :-)

A very well equipped lab of 25-30 iMacs (I didn't count) each one with a midi keyboard attached. This class were using Sibelius.

See-saw blobs.

Inspiring, Creating, Thinking! We ran a digital creativity inservice today. Mostly we played with I Can Animate. :-)

The water features in the playground were interesting. There was a word at either end of the bench - one said "Aspire" and the other said "Shine". Inspirational or a load of old nonsense? You be the judge.

Andrew said, "You should be blogging this." So here it is. Blogged from the Chinese Restaurant.

Better focus? ...But only wispy clouds, my finger went right through it. :-)

Took this at lunch time when the school was out. One pupil kept shouting, "Take my picture! Take a picture of me!" I felt a bit silly taking a picture of my hand while staring at the sky. So although I thought I did better with this one, I was too embarrassed to try for more. :-)

Coloured perspex figures made a striking 3D (well 2.5D) image. (There is also a slightly closer view.)

Kate and Leonardo?

"How does the tripod work?"

Apparently I fell asleep during the post lunchtime session. (Although I would say I was listening with my eyes closed!) They stuck a post-it on my laptop and were most amused at my confusion when I woke up.
