More wabi-sabi, and yet another tulip; there appears to be no end to these tulips, as I've got another dozed or so in this batch, and two more batches coming up right behind them!

What I like here is the way the petals seem to almost swirl around the curving stem, as if it were doing the twist, pointing to the two top corners, and those blue "eyes" in the pistils.

The result of a multi-image focus stack, this image should reward pretty close examination. Maximum viewing size on your computer can be found by opening the image in a separate window, making that window maximum size, typing the letter "L" on the keyboard, and then clicking the cursor as long as a '+' appears in it, typically twice.

If you find this image to your liking, you can find more wabi-sabi - and an account of my understanding of the meaning of that term - in my wabi-sabi album, more tulips in my Tulips album, and more dancing flowers in my Tiny Dancers album.

BTW, I've taken to putting a white rim around these images on black because, on my iPhone flickr app, it is otherwise difficult to discern the image's edges. I made it tiny because, while large mats look lovely on my desktop monitor, they make it hard for my tired old eyes to view an image on my iPhone's small screen.

- The four leaf clover is the most well known lucky symbol around the world and across many very different cultures, with its origin ages old.

- According to legend, Eve carried a four leaf clover from the Garden of Eden.

- Druids held the 4 leaf clover in high esteem and considered them a sign of luck.

- If consumed, a genie appears. This genie grants you three wishes. These three wishes must be used in one year.

- In addition, each leaf is believed to represent something: the first is for faith, the second is for hope, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck.

- Marsilea quadrifolia, Four Leaf Clover or European Water Clover has its natural habitat in Europe and Southern Asia. It is found growing both submersed and emersed along marshlands, riverbanks (such as the Loire, Po and parts of the Danube) and streams. Considered an invasive exotic in North America.

This aquatic fern bears a 4 parted leaf resembling '4-leaf clover' (Trifolium). Leaves floating in deep water or erect in shallow water or on land.

More wabi-sabi, and yet another tulip; there appears to be no end to these tulips, as there's a seemingly endless supply at the grocer's, and since I almost never throw them away, the supply just keeps growing. Indeed, I strongly suspect that at least one of these beauties has already appeared in another image in my photostream.

I think what I like most here is the way the image pulls my eyes back and forth from one blossom to the other, and then down to the dancing stems. And, of course, I'm always smitten by the texture and color of these withered flower parts.

A double rainbow appears in the suburbs of Calgary after a storm.

One rock formation appears to be whispering a secret to the other formation. Evidently the secret was not welcome.

This bird appeared in the early light in the Point Traverse woods and the day was set. As we enter our first deep freeze of the winter here the reminders of spring migration and the seasonal warming of our part of the world seem important.

Despite having a high and complex canopy, the woods at Point Traverse have a very varied range of habitats. The birds that like to (or need to) come in low have lots of fallen trees and Red Cedars, which can make a great setting for the birds.

Unfortunately, haven't seen these again since they first appeared four days ago - maybe just passing through...

Grabbed a chance at what appears to be a sunset as there have been a couple of red ones recently , but missed them . In fact this is three in the afternoon and sunset was not for a while yet - but it will have to do !!

It appears I've reverted to my pink phase. I love pink flowers. There, I've admitted it. I'm glad I've got that off my chest. :)

The shell behind the flower is a white Murex, which I love for its sculptural quality.

Finally some sun appeared.......

This cat has recently appeared in the neighbourhood and has been unsuccessfully stalking the bird feeders we keep in the backyard.

Today was a bit hilarious to watch, we got a bunch of freezing rain overnight so today the cat was sliding around while trying to 'stalk' the pigeons.

The pigeons flew away with ease while the cat tried to get a grip on the slick snow and ice.

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe.

This is my first experience with hoarfrost. Everywhere else I've lived it's just been frost. At first I thought they were snowflakes, but it hadn't snowed. They're very beautiful and delicate. If you get too close, even the warmth of your breath can destroy your subject. And if even a slight breeze comes up, they will blow away. Of the ones I've reviewed, this has pretty good detail and a dark enough background to help them stand out. And the next time the frost appears, I'll try find better subjects. :) (Neighborhood Snow DSC_5290.jpg)

After tramping for two days on Mount Taranaki, the cloud finally cleared for this reveal just before sunset. Taken from Holly Hut on the Pouakai Crossing. I am intrigued by that very large slab-like structure near the top on the right - it looks like it may collapse at any time! Be great if anyone knows what this feature is called? (Update: I think it's called the Turtle)

"Egmont National Park is a mountainous area that encompasses three volcanic cones. The main peak of Mount Taranaki (2,518 m) forms the nucleus of the park. It is the most recent and only active volcanic peak in the park, although it is now considered dormant. Because it is considered one of the most symmetrical mountains in the world, it is a very distinctive landmark. The other two volcanic cones, which are now extinct, form the basis of the Pouakai and Kaitake Ranges in the north-western part of the park." www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/taranak...

Lancashire

it appeared this morning that i'd been mysteriously gifted with a cow -- turns out she's an escapee from a nearby ranch -- she apparently hops over a 4-foot fence to get out!

I saw this male bear several times while staying in Finland last summer, and every time he made a big impression, especially when appearing from behind a tree; I was extremely glad to be in a secure hide. The guides reckoned he was approximately 450kg, which is 5 times my weight. Individuals have been recorded at a whopping 650kg; the mind boggles. He was a relatively recent visitor to the area, and they thought he was fairly relaxed, but they did not want to meet him in the forest on foot!

They say she appears only when winter grows weary of pretending to be gentle.

Her gown is woven from frost and fallen snow, her mask carved from ice so precise it knows the exact shape of secrets. Behind intricate filigree, her eyes hold the weight of a thousand silent storms.

No one knows who she was before the cold claimed her—or if she was ever anything but winter incarnate. Some say she's a warning. Others, a wish made by someone who wanted to feel nothing at all.

She moves through the forest without sound, leaving only questions in her wake.

What transforms a woman into a season?

And can she ever thaw?

Sixth image in my current Ice and Snow series...

We regularly have Canada geese and Mallard flocks that overwinter at our city's lakeshore, often swimming among the ice floes and freezing water. And sometimes we have surprising visitors that join the regulars, in this case a Trumpeter Swan!

As I often do in the wintertime, I went down to the lakeshore at sunset a couple days ago to photograph the ducks and geese and I discovered this beautiful, white swan. It was hanging around the geese.

I didn't get many shots of it before 50 geese decided to lift into the air and fly away, which triggered this swan to do the same. I was disappointed but was glad I got at least this nice capture to share with you.

What appears to be dirt and debris floating on the water surface here in the foreground is actually small bits of ice. How ANY of these birds can comfortably swim in such cold water is beyond me. But they don’t seem to mind and they carry on as if it were summer.

I love the pure white of the swan bathed in the reflected colors of the sunset here. Enjoy!

I appear to have become somewhat addicted to lampwork glass beads recently. This one was made by a lovely lady in Scotland. I often wish I was creative. To be fair, I am creative in my mind, but my hands don't necessarily get the message. :)

A night hike led me to this view of the sandstone formations at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park. In the gulch the eroded ground was very hard as if packed by a steam roller. The mounds of sandstone are off limits to hiking. So with respect to the land, I snapped some panoramas from the gulch. The moon wasn't due out for another 2.5 to 3 hours, and the wind was picking up. It was getting colder and I was getting hungry.

A 5 shot panorama of the foreground with a 12mm ultra wide lens, and 10 shot panorama of the night sky shot at 28mm (DX) lens. The sky was shot at Mojave National Preserve in April 2017. The main foreground was shot in December 2015. Edited in Lightroom, auto stitched in Microsoft ICE, and layered in Corel Paintshop.

On a clear night in Death Valley a lot of stars appear after twilight. Even in Dec when most of the Milky Way is below the horizon, it's sill visible going across the sky.

Simply added an extension tube to my Z 24-70mm and a little bit of light from above and a jewel appears. I need a Macro lens and soon.

Appearing like a volcano, this tree stump had me returning for the light. Three times I came back to this place after recognizing the potential. Each day the light would rim the stump but not give what I was looking for. On the final attempt, the light leaked from between the trees. However, it only lit one side. Off I went to enjoy the forest trek only to return for another attempt. This time the light delivered.

At its peak, the rim was lit all around, giving the desired look. The spotted light all about it worked out well to support the main subject, so it too was included. Sometimes, a little persistence goes a long way.

This 177 foot waterfall appears to be a favorite of visitors to Silver Falls State Park because it is near the parking lot so not much hiking is required to see it. Although I did overhear some complaints about the short steep slope necessary to descend to get this viewpoint. If one keeps walking one can walk behind the waterfall. If you zoom in, you can see the railing by the trail behind the falls.

This female Orchard oriole appeared with the male later in the day. They are the smallest of the oriole family. I saw this gal in the pond's stream but liked her pose in the Maple tree with the green background better. The city appears in the historical record dating back in 1336 by its medieval Greek name Argyrókastro as part of the Byzantine Empire. It first developed in the hill where the Gjirokastër Fortress is located. In this period, Gjirokastër was contested between the Despotate of Epirus and the Albanian clan of Zenebishi under Gjon Zenebishi who made it his capital in 1417. It was taken by the Ottomans in 1418, a year after's Gjon's death and it became the seat of the Sanjak of Albania. Throughout the Ottoman era, Gjirokastër was officially known in Ottoman Turkish as Ergiri and also Ergiri Kasrı. During the Ottoman period conversions to Islam and an influx of Muslim converts from the surrounding countryside made Gjirokastër go from being an overwhelmingly Christian city in the 16th century into one with a large Muslim population by the early 19th century. Gjirokastër also became a major religious centre for Bektashi Sufism.

Taken by the Hellenic Army during the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, Gjirokastër was eventually incorporated into the newly independent state of Albania in 1913. The local Greek population rebelled and established the short-lived Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus in 1914 with Gjirokastër as its capital. During the communist period, Gjirokastër was designated a "museum city" due to its architectural heritage.

Gjirokastër is the birthplace of former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha.
