Dawn breaks behind the ASTP Saturn IB launch vehicle during the Countdown Demonstration Test. The Mobile Service Structure was moved away from the vehicle for the test, which is a step-by-step dress rehearsal for the launch culminating in a simulated T-zero and launch. During the test, the stages of the Saturn IB rocket were fueled as they would be on launch day, July 15. Following the simulated liftoff, the fuels were offloaded and the terminal portion of the count was repeated the next day with the prime crewmen Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand and Donald Slayton aboard the spacecraft.

Valery N. Kubasov is one of the few Russian cosmonauts I've met. He is probably best known for his flight on the Soyuz spacecraft that took part in the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first US-USSR international mission.
In 1966, Kubasov was accepted into the cosmonaut program, and took a complete course of space-flight training. He first entered space as the flight engineer of Soyuz-6, taking part in a group space flight with spaceships Soyuz-7 and Soyuz-8 from October 11 to 16, 1969. On board the Soyuz-6 he conducted experimental welding in outer space, an important step toward the eventual construction of the world's first space station, Salyut-1 (launched on April 19, 1971). Kubasov was assigned to the first crew to occupy Salyut 1, but was replaced when he fell ill, as was the rest of his crew. The three-member crew that did fly, however, died on June 29, 1971 during reentry, when an air valve failed.
Kubasov's second space mission was as a flight engineer on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). After lifting off from Baikanor Cosmodrome on July 15, 1975 Kubasov and Alexei Leonov, the other Soyuz 19 crewmember, spent 5.94 days in space, linking up with the American Apollo spacecraft on July 17. Apollo 18 was launched seven and a half hours later, carrying astronauts Tom Stafford, Deke Slayton and Vance Brand. After docking in space, the two countries' crewmembers rotated between the Soyuz and Apollo spacecraft and conducted mainly ceremonial activities. Leonov was on the American side five hours and 43 minutes, and Kubasov spent almost five hours in the Apollo command and docking modules.
After nearly 44 hours, Apollo and Soyuz parted for the first time to a "station-keeping" range of 160 feet. The Apollo crew placed its craft between Soyuz and the Sun so that the diameter of the service module formed a disk, which blocked out the Sun. After this experiment Apollo moved towards Soyuz for the second docking.
Three hours later, Apollo and Soyuz undocked for the second and final time. The spacecraft moved to a 130-foot station-keeping distance so that an ultraviolet absorption experiment could be performed. With all the joint flight activities completed, the ships went on their separate ways and Soyuz 19 landed safely on July 21, 1975. The ASTP marked many firsts, including the first internationally manned mission, the first rendezvous between two manned spacecraft and the first exchange of crews between spacecraft of two different nations.
Kubasov made his last spaceflight as commander of Soyuz 36, launched from Baikanor on May 26, 1980. During a flight of 7.87 days, the Soyuz transported the fifth international crew under the INTERCOSMOS program, comprising Kubasov and Bertalan Farkas, the first Hungarian cosmonaut, to the Salyut-6 space station to carry out scientific research and experiments. They returned to Earth aboard Soyuz 35 on June 3. Kubasov retired from cosmonaut service on November 13, 1993.
In his three flights he logged 18.75 days in space. Kubasov was later deputy director of RKK Energia, a Russian manufacturer of spacecraft.
Paying a visit to California Science Center on Saturday, 13 October 2012, as I await its latest spacecraft arrival, Space Shuttle Endeavour, scheduled for the evening. (As it would turn out, the Space Shuttle would not arrive until midday the next day.)
California Science Center already has other key American manned spacecraft, and adding Endeavour would very nicely complement the existing collection.
In front is an Apollo command module; intended to be Apollo 18 and flown to the moon in 1973, it instead became a spare when Apollo was terminated after Apollo 17, and it was launched on a smaller Saturn 1B rocket in 1975 for docking with a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. At the termination of the Apollo program, there were three spare Saturn V rockets and Apollo spacecraft, that would've allowed three extra trips to the moon; one of the surplus Saturn Vs was used to launch the Skylab space station, and the other two Apollo - Saturn V combinations are preserved at Johnson Space Center in Houston and Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Just behind the Apollo is the Gemini 11 capsule. Smaller than the Apollo, it had room for two astronauts, who lived aboard for two days; even the act of standing up would have required the opening of a hatch and a spacewalk.
Behind the Gemini, and not visible, is a single-passenger Mercury capsule. This museum's Mercury is the Mercury-Redstone 2, which made a 16-minute suborbital space flight in 1961 with a chimpanzee on board, in preparation for a human flight. While this was not the first spaceship to fly with a live animal on board (the Soviets had Sputnik II, with a dog on board, in 1958), it was the first spaceship to bring that animal back alive (Sputnik II had no provisions for returning the dog to Earth alive - the dog died in orbit).

The Apollo Command and Service Module combination (CSM 105), was originally used for vibration and acoustic tests.
This Block II Apollo Command and Service Module combination (CSM 105), manufactured by North American Rockwell, was originally used for vibration and acoustic tests. In 1973 it was refurbished for use in the Paris Air Show. The CSM was displayed docked to the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft, as was planned for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Program (ASTP) mission in July 1975. The Soyuz spacecraft was made of residual test hardware.
In 1976 this combined exhibit was installed in the National Air and Space Museum after its transfer from NASA.

The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project(ASTP) was the last mission in the Apollo program and was the first joint flight of the U.S. and Soviet space programs, marking a brief thaw in the Cold War. The mission took place in July 1975 when two manned spacecraft were launched into Earth orbit--one from Kazakstan, the other from Florida. For the United States of America, it was the last Apollo flight, as well as the last manned space launch until the flight of the first Space Shuttle in April 1981.
hough the Test Project included several scientific missions (including an engineered eclipse of the Sun by Apollo for Soyuz to take photographs of the solar corona), and provided useful engineering information on the synchronization of American and Soviet space technology that would prove useful in the future Shuttle-Mir Program, the primary purpose of the mission was symbolic. ASTP was seen as a symbol of the policy of détente (relaxing or easing) that the two superpowers were beginning to adopt at the time, and as a fitting end to the tension of the Space Race. Engineering teams from both sides collaborated in the development of a docking module to link the spacecraft. Control centers in Moscow and Houston exercised joint duties through a cooperative exchange of tracking data and communications. The crews visited each other's spacecraft, shared meals, and worked on various tasks during several days together in space.
The National Air and Space Museum (NASM), administered by the Smithsonian Institute, maintains the largest collection of aircraft and spacecraft in the world and is a vital center for research into the history, science, and technology of aviation and spaceflight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. Established along the National Mall on July 1, 1976, the museum was designed by Gyo Obata of Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum as four simple marble-encased cubes containing the smaller and more theatrical exhibits, connected by three spacious steel-and-glass atrium which house the larger exhibits such as missiles, airplanes and spacecraft.
The Smithsonian Institution, an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its shops and its magazines, was established in 1846. Although concentrated in Washington DC, its collection of over 136 million items is spread through 19 museums, a zoo, and nine research centers from New York to Panama.

The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) was the first international docking of spacecraft and provided a basis for a standardized international system for docking of manned spacecraft. On July 17, 1975, the Soyuz spacecraft, with cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov, docked with the Apollo spacecraft, and astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald Sleyton. The ASTP mission accomplished spacecraft rendezvous, docking and undocking, crew transfer, and demonstrated the interaction of U.S. and U.S.S.R. control centers and spacecraft crews. The ASTP was the last use of a Saturn launch vehicle.

The 40th anniversary of the #HistoricHandshakeInSpace of American Brigadier General Thomas Stafford and Russian cosmonaut and national hero Alexey Leonov during the #ApolloSoyuzTestProject on July 17th.
The 46th anniversary of the #MoonLanding on July 20th, when 3 men left our #BlueDot and 2 of them took the very first small steps on a "foreign world" ever - in the name of their team of 400.000 behind and of mankind as a whole.
The 50th anniversary of first Mars encounter of #Mariner4 probe, the first robotic visit to Mars on July 14th.
My cherry on the cake was being able to watch the #PlutoFlyby of #NewHorizons on July 14th with my little son (nearly 5 years old now), whose eyes were glued on the livecast and who was jumping with excitement on his little chair, when Alan Stern and his team and many space enthusiasts on our screen were waving their flags and cheering and smiling while witnessing history in the making.
I am thankful to live in times were our boundaries are being pushed constantly and mankind dares to boldly go, where nobody has gone before - together, in global teams.
Being able to share this with our little son since his early months and passing on our love of our beautiful blue marble and everything beyond is a precious gift.
Scrolling through pics of our travel adventures made me aware again, how much I am looking forward to the times, when @LightspeedLeo will be old enough to understand what he and his travelbuddy @PinkLilDragon saw and whom they met together during all our adventures with our growing number of @Spaceholix friends from all around the world and also with so many of our #SpaceHeroes and #ScienceHeroes in person and via social media.
I thank all for passing on the torch of inspiration and dedicate my designs to all involved in these historical events of mankind - taking countless small steps, adding up to giant leaps, culminating in #NewHorizons leaving all our planets behind and passing by #Pluto (which will ALWAYS remain a planet in my heart (dwarf or not ;-) )

40 years ago today something truly wonderful happened:
the historic handshake between former enemies USA and RUSSIA, who met in space during the #ApolloSoyuzTestProject and who inspired so many with something new.
Who would have dared to hope back then that this "small handshake in space would grow into that giant development of global co-operation" which built a wonderful foundation for
#SpaceExplorationAtItsBest, which is happening in so many areas these days.
Be it on our International Space Station #ISS, be it on our shared journey to outer space, flying by Pluto and leaving our solar system, following the motto "Together we achieve more".
I cannot express how thankful I am for all our adventures, which we share since a few years with a growing number of friends from all over the world in a growing number of countries and even on a growing number of continents - also thanks to this handshake.
And I am happy that all this also includes meeting Vance Brand and Alexey Leonov and so many other space ambassadors in person.

While the Soyuz craft returned to Earth on July 21st, the Apollo craft stayed in space another 3 days, landing on July 24th in the Pacific Ocean. ASTP was a success, as not only did crews accomplish the rendezvous and docking, but they also performed in-flight intervehicular crew transfers and various scientific experiments. ASTP proved to be significant step toward improving international cooperation in space during the Cold War.

This picture was furnished by the USSR in an exchange of photography taken during the ASTP flight. Note the docking mechanism and docking target on the Docking Module. The four dish-like reflectors of the unified S-band high-gain antenna protrude from the side of the Service Module. The American and Soviet spacecraft were joined together in space for approximately 47 hours on July 17-18-19, 1975.

Note of course the Launcher Umbilical Tower (LUT) (on its Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP)) under construction in the left background…along with the Launch Control Center (LCC) to the immediate right of the VAB, also under construction.
And finally, the framework of the squat & rarely acknowledged Utility Annex - under construction as well - is visible to the left of the VAB, partially obstructing some of the LUT MLP.

I am thankful to live in times were our boundaries are being pushed constantly and mankind dares to boldly go, where nobody has gone before - together, in global teams.

A close-up view of the Commemorative Plaque for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). Two plaques divided into four quarters each will be flown on the ASTP mission. An un-assembled four-part plaque is shown here. The American ASTP crew will carry the four U.S. quarter pieces aboard Apollo; and the Soviet ASTP crew will carry the four USSR quarter sections aboard Soyuz. The eight quarter pieces will be joined together to form two complete commemorative plaques after the two spacecraft rendezvous and dock in Earth orbit. One complete plaque then will be returned to Earth by the astronauts; and the other complete plaque will be brought back by the cosmonauts. The plaque is written in both English and Russian.

The 50th anniversary of first Mars encounter of #Mariner4 probe, the first robotic visit to Mars on July 14th.
My cherry on the cake was being able to watch the #PlutoFlyby of #NewHorizons on July 14th with my little son (nearly 5 years old now), whose eyes were glued on the livecast and who was jumping with excitement on his little chair, when people on the screen were waving their flags and cheering and smiling while witnessing history in the making.
I am thankful to live in times were our boundaries are being pushed constantly and mankind dares to boldly go, where nobody has gone before - together, in global teams.
Being able to share this with our little son since his early months and passing on our love of our beautiful blue marble and everything beyond is a precious gift.
