Announcing the launch of my newest visual project, which I'm calling "Warp Drive". WD is a variation of the panoramic sabotage that I called "TumbleWorld", which breaks up the image into planes, fragments or dimensions. "Warp Drive" is also about manipulating the iPhone's panoramic function. Yet, instead of breaking up the image, WD seeks to radically warp or stretch it. As in "Pano-sabotage", the image is created by the movement of the hand with the effect of this movement manifesting IN the camera, as opposed to software manipulation occuring OUTSIDE the capture device.

This image IS photo manipulated but only with light and colour effects. The stretched composition was achieved by moving the iPhone camera around in an exaggerated arc of 180 degrees. Standard "wide-angle" panoramic photography demands that the camera be moved in a straight line across the scene. "Warp Drive's" technique, like "Pano-Sabotage", defies the convention, seeking to push the technical idiosyncrasy into another form of extreme.

So, "Warp Drive" is the name of this project, as "TumbleWorld" is the name of the fragmented style of the last 2 years, and the technique I'm using here I'm calling "PANO-Xtreme", as opposed to "PANO-Sabotage" seen In "TumbleWorld".

Welcome aboard. I hope you like this new journey.

Red backed Shrike - Lanius collurio

The red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) is a carnivorous passerine bird and member of the shrike family Laniidae. The breeding range stretches from Western Europe east to central Russia but it only rarely occurs in the British Isles. It is migratory and winters in the western areas of tropical Africa.

Once a common migratory visitor to Great Britain, numbers declined sharply during the 20th century. The bird's last stronghold was in Breckland but by 1988 just a single pair remained, successfully raising young at Santon Downham. The following year for the first time no nests were recorded in the UK. But since then sporadic breeding has taken place, mostly in Scotland and Wales. In September 2010 the RSPB announced that a pair had raised chicks at a secret location on Dartmoor where the bird last bred in 1970. In 2011, two pairs nested in the same locality, fledging seven young. In 2012 there was another breeding attempt, this time unsuccessful, probably due to a prolonged spell of wet weather. In 2013 breeding was again confirmed in Devon, with two young fledged at a new site.

This return to south western England has been an unexpected development and has raised speculation that a warming climate could assist the bird in re-colonising some of its former haunts, if only in small numbers.

As announced last week, I spent last night and this morning at the Quitzdorfer reservoir. The conditions were so completely different from last year and also from what I had expected, and not just because it was almost 25 degrees already at four in the morning.

Due to the intense heat, a dome of haze had settled over the entire sky. I have never experienced anything like this before. As the sun rose, it took some time to even break through the haze. When it made it through, everything was bathed in a golden brown light for a short time. Very unusual. Because of this, let's call it phenomenon, , all the photos I made have this very special lighting mood. I can't even tell if I like this or not. I'll probably have to work with it a bit first.

Announcing on December 1, my 2012 "Photo of the Year"

I chose this photo because of the range of emotions I feel when I look at it. The idea of struggle and loneliness spring to mind.

Australasian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaehollandiae)

I stopped at the Vic Uni Pond on the way to Sneydes Rd. this morning to check on the Grebes. At that point Mum was still just sitting on the nest so I moved to the other end of the pond, where the previous clutch of chicks has been banished too. I got some nice images. On the way back I stopped again and spotted Mum off the nest and Dad tending to the nest. I then noticed she had two chicks riding in her wings. When she came back to the nest three chicks popped out. She then proceeded to check on the remaining egg(s) and settled in. A difficult spot to get a clear shot and the chicks are constantly moving.

A gallery created to allow SL photographers to showcase their photos from Flickr in SL .... for free! No fees, no charges, absolutely free.

Every month I will help a photographer showcase their art in SL. There will be an official launch party where the attendees get to meet the artist to talk about their work, and just meet other fellow Flickr artists.

Announced by the weather service, yet still surprising: The first snow falls silently, transforming the landscape overnight. From a meteorological perspective, it’s a completely normal phenomenon, yet this first encounter with snow always enchants us, as if we’ve never seen or understood it before.

Arrives the snow, and, driving o'er the fields,

Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air

Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,

And veils the farmhouse at the garden's end.

Yes, it's snowing !!!!!!!!!!!!!

MTM announced this week at SDP40 325 and GN coach 1096 were being shipped to Albia Iowa in the coming weeks for repaints.

A massive private donation is seeing that both 325 and 1096 are repainted in Great Northern orange and green.

The 325 wore the simplified orange scheme for the first few years of her existence. seen here:

www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=114373

Both will return to the roundhouse in time for the 2023 operating season, so I've heard.

Being with the "big leagues" I've mostly fallen out of touch with MTM but maintain a few connections.

Fundraisers to repaint it Big Sky Blue (plan A) were deemed not successful, and the museum is giving the option of refund, reallocation, or hold for future 325 cosmetics.

Seen here are 325 & 1096 at Osceola in October 2018, when I made my last run as a volunteer.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product in a few months.

Honestly, with the chaos that is MTM the past year, I didn't think there was a snowball's chance in hell it would happen. But, money talks and the money wanted orange, even though I, along with many others, was rooting for blue.

Announcing his arrival in the backyard garden.

During late fall, the snow geese begin. their migration and spend time on the western slope. Though we don't get the 10's of thousands (or more) that some places like Bosque get, we do get our fair share. Here are just a few of them announcing their arrival in November. :-)

This Blue Jay loudly announced to the neighborhood he'd just spotted the peanuts and he was on is way!

Once I heard him, all I had to do was wait and within minutes he showed up, grabbed a few peanuts and took off.

Sometimes the Blue Jays loud calls seem more like a warning to let every one know danger is close by. I can't help but wonder if they do it on purpose to try and scare off the other birds so they can have free access to whatever it is they are after.

US Steel recently announced plans to reopen its Granite City Works hot strip mill, idled a year ago in January 2016, which followed the shutdown of the blast furnaces and steelmaking facilities in December 2015. Still, every once in a while, you can catch a movement of the resident railroad around or out of the plant.

For today at least, this USS movement across Madison Avenue in Granite City, IL seems to signal a return to partial normalcy for the mill and about 200 of its 1500 workers.

They don't shout, but are among the first to appear; they've been in bloom for weeks now: long lasting , subtly beautiful.

Nitroglobus is proud to announce the return of acclaimed artist Kian with his new exhibition DRAG.ed & FRAME.d, on view throughout December 2025 at The Annex of Nitroglobus.

After his last showing, Zornian Women (June 2023), I repeatedly invited Kian to present new work. His return marks not only a renewed collaboration but also a striking continuation of his distinctive artistic voice.

In DRAG.ed & FRAME.d, Kian delves into themes that lie at the heart of his practice—humor, daring aesthetic choices, and provocative conceptual play. The series moves fluidly “between power and vulnerability,” as the artist describes, exploring identity, performativity, and the thresholds between constructed and perceived selves.

Kian is back with a topic that is unmistakably his. His work is daring, humorous, and thought-provoking, encouraging visitors to look beyond boundaries and conventions. I’m sincerely happy to welcome him again to Nitroglobus.

Visitors are encouraged to read Kian’s accompanying text, which offers a deeper look into the conceptual motivations behind the exhibition.

Description by the artist:

Welcome to Drag.ed and Frame.d—an intimate visual journey shaped through the art of drag and the boundless possibilities of photography. These images reveal a character who shifts fluidly between power and vulnerability: at times bold, vibrant, and unapologetically commanding; at others quiet, fragile, and suspended in moments of loneliness. Through this duality, I explores the emotional spectrum of identity and performance, challenging how we see strength, beauty, and self-expression.

Drag, in his hands, becomes more than costume—it becomes a language. A space where diversity thrives, where boundaries of gender, presence, and reality are stretched and redefined. Each photograph invites viewers to question what is real, what is constructed, and what lies in the in-between.

Thank you for stepping into this world. May these images encourage you to embrace complexity, celebrate difference, and find truth in every transformation.

Kian
