UP 4-8-4 Northern FEF-3 class steam locomotive # 8444 and its railfan excursion train is providing a photo run-by between Sterling & Denver, Colorado, summer 1980. On this trip I believe that speeds of 50 mph or greater were reached at times. Back in 1972 on a previous trip speeds of 70 mph were achieved. The locomotive most of the time is very clean burning with out too much smoke being generated, but for the photo run-by the UP cab crew attempts to generate extra smoke for the photographers. One nice detail about these earlier railfan trips is that the extra canteen cars or auxiliary tenders do not follow the tender and the situation appears to be much more normal. You can see the fireman in his cab window.

Reading Lines coal burning G3 class 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive # 215, is seen departing with one Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines coach that's bound for Atlantic City from the station in Hammonton, NJ, ca early 1950's. This short train consisting of one coach is most likely an off hour train, just operated to provide constant service.

The name of the photographer that captured this image on film is unknown, however, it may have been a John Dziobko Jr. (www.GodfatherRails.com) photo . This photo came in a group of railroad photos included in a received E-mail sending years ago, and is a modified crop of the original photo.

Hartford Union Station north end view of the former middle platform looking to south at Hartford, Connecticut, 2002. At this time Amtrak was the provider for passenger service at the now one track station, formerly four track. The old north bound Springfield Line track has been removed nearest the station building. The two tracks on the other side of the former center platform have also been removed, as was the platform and canopy. The station building by this time was remolded and refurbished inside. Today a new mostly double track installation is being installed between New Haven and Springfield, with projected new additional passenger rail services to be provided sometime in 2018.

The buildings to the left are located on Union Place. The vegetation growth to the right has grown up on a former stub track, that butted against the middle platform.

This photo was taken on one of those days that could have been better weather wise, however, since you were there, you needed to take the photo anyway.

Southern Railway operated Norfolk & Western J-class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 611, is seen in the yard with coal being loaded into the tender by crane at Atlanta, Georgia, May 1983. A small crane is loading coal from a gondola with a clamshell bucket. A group of steam crewmen are taking a break on the platform to the left.

Southern Railway operated S&A 4-6-2, ALCO built 1910, Light Pacific, steam locomotive # 750, with a railfan excursion train at photo runby location in Fargo, Georgia, November 1983. The train has now passed all of the passengers, observers, railfans and photographers situated at the photo runby location on the opposite side of the train. You may observe that the bell is ringing by its high swing position. In the right side background you may notice a red block signal in the distance. There may have been a couple of photo runbys on this day.

Penn Central ex Pennsylvania Railroad EMD GP35 # 2357 & ex New Haven Railroad GE U25B # 2678 are seen while leading a westbound manifest freight train through Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. This photo was taken by Bob Hughes near his workplace at tower SS38 in Stamford.

New Haven Railroad station view to the north with the Springfield Line to the right the and New Britain Line to the left at Berlin, Connecticut, ca 1920's. The Springfield Line to the right ran from New Haven, Connecticut via Wallingford, Meriden, Berlin, Hartford, Windsor Locks to Springfield, Massachusetts. The New Britain Line to the left ran from Berlin to New Britain with a connection to the Waterbury Line. Just beyond the platform canopy on the left was a small yard area which extended for about 1/3 mile to the north. Check out the old vehicles in this scene. Do believe that is a gas railbus spotted at the left platform which perhaps was operating between Berlin and New Britain.

The name of the photographer that captured this image on film is unknown. This is a modified, enhanced and cropped photo scan that is from a B&W image that was on the Internet.

Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad transfer caboose # C 703, is seen on a freight train in Scranton, Pennsylvania, October 1996. It was very nice to see this beautiful caboose still in actual railroad operation at this late date. The late afternoon sun provided a warm glow in the scene.

New Haven Railroad officials (aka: suits) are seen in a discussion while at the ground level yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut, July 6, 1926. In the background you can see the electric motor storage area and also the steam locomotive water tower and coaling tower. The motor directly behind the man with the white shirt appears to be an EF-1 class motor, but of course in those days there were no motor classes, because they came later for all motors. Check out the heavyset man because he is wearing a summertime straw hat of the era.

This photo came from my New Haven Railroad photo collection, and the photographers name is unknown. Any credit for this photo must be provided to the original photographer.

New Haven Railroad westbound Maintenance-Of-Way train with a caboose and crew is seen bringing up rear as it passed by tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. You also can see a portion of the downtown area along with highway I-95 in this scene that was captured by Bob Hughes from his tower location. Do believe that this train is power by an ALCO RS-3 locomotive.

Hartford Union Station with a view from the rear car vestibule of a Northbound Amtrak train that is departing the station platform at Hartford, Connecticut, Summer 1971, courtesy Paul Coe. In this view you can see that all four platform tracks are still in place, however, today with the new double tracking of the Springfield Line, Hartford's Union Station has only one platform track. Gee, what can go wrong with that? When looking directly back behind the train and down the tracks you can clearly see the State Capitol Building. The tracks to and from this station enter and depart on a viaduct with the tracks situated on the second floor of the station. The two tracks seen in the foreground are the Springfield Line that runs form New Haven to Springfield. The tracks on the other side of the station are the platform tracks that connect with the Midland Division and the Highland Division. About one mile North of the station is the Hartford Railroad Yard, where connections to other branch lines can be made.

Paul Coe (noted railfan photographer) provided me with this photo as a 3 x 5 inch print that I scanned to produce this photo image.

New Haven Railroad EMD FL-9's lead an westbound passenger train with a Rock Island REA Express car # 4394 in the consist at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. This RI REA Express car was quite modern looking in appearance at this time. There always seemed to be a surprise visitor in respect to foreign railroad equipment passing through Stamford. Bob Hughes captured this image on film from his tower location.

Union Pacific ALCO 4-8-4 Northern FEF-3 class steam locomotive # 8444, is seen at the station with a rail fan excursion train in Sterling, Colorado, July 26, 1980 - 4. This excursion trip was sponsored by "The Rocky Mountain Railroad Club." In this scene you can see the domed observation lounge at the end of the 12 car train. Train crew members on top of the tender appear to be replenishing water, while other crew members standing next to the drivers are performing the lubrication tasks. In the background you can see the water tower with the city name Sterling, Colorado applied on the side of the tank. Shortly the train will move ahead to another location where it will be turned for the return trip back to Denver,

New Haven Railroad EP-3 electric locomotive # 357, with a west bound passenger train is seen at the station platform in Stamford, Connecticut, ca mid 1950's. In this scene you may observe the short blade lower quadrant semaphore block signals that are used in the electrified territory. The baggage car doors have been replace with the modified flat panel door that included a single centered window. Notice the distinctive triangular shaped catenary that is used in this portion of the railroad westward.

Seaboard System Railroad, former SCL EMD GP7 loco # 932, is seen while leading freight cars across a diamond during switching moves as it passes through the Simpson Yard at Jacksonville, Florida, 1983. Notice the highway style railroad crossing gate with a stop sign use to protect the Simpson Yard. On the far left is a MOW speeder.

New Haven Railroad ALCO shop goat, a 0-6-0T oil burning saddleback steam switcher # 2305, along with a crewman, is seen at the Van Nest Shops in the Bronx, New York, 1949. On the right side of the photo check out the new 1949 Ford convertible. Of interest is the exhaust steam pipe that is attached to the engineers side cylinder at its front, but the purpose is unknown to me. It may have to do with the fact that these locomotives used slid valve cylinders and saturated steam, because they were not superheated engines. This may have something to do with the excess of condensation provided by this type of engine, when shifting cars for a while and then sitting for perhaps some long periods of time. this steam switcher lasted in operational service until November 1951. Notice on these foreground shop track that tie plates are not used to secure the rails to the ties, only spikes.

Union Pacific 4-8-4 FEF-3 class ALCO Northern steam locomotive # 8444 is being prepared to depart in the early morning sunlight with its railfan excursion train at Union Station Denver, Colorado, summer 1980. The railfans and photographer are located by every dutch door opening and at the baggage car door areas to observe or to capture the action on film. In this view you can see how the steam locomotive and tender tower over the lightweight passenger cars.

Seaboard Air Line Railway M1 class 4-8-2 Mountain steam locomotive # 221 is seen spotted on a siding at Union Station in Tampa, Florida, ca early 1930's. Another smaller SAL steam locomotive is behind the M1 class Mountain locomotive. Behind the pilot area in the background are the station platform tracks with an RPO car in the scene. The SAL mountain did normally operate between Jacksonville and Tampa, however, on occasions they were also used on larger or heavier passenger trains that served the Saint Petersburg Line.

CSX Railroad GE CW44AC locomotive # 58 leads engine # 314 with a southbound manifest freight train as it passes through a grade crossing at Chestoa, Tennessee 8-2-2008. this location is approximately five mile from downtown Erwin. This train has a mixed freight consist instead of the normal southbound unit coal trains that are mostly seen.

Union Pacific EMD SD40-2 diesel electric locomotive # 8065, in lead of four other loco's, is seen while in charge of a manifest freight train in Colorado, July 26, 1980. The freight train was seen while the UP 8444 led rail fan excursion train operating between Denver, Laramie & return was stopped. Also the freight train is preparing to enter a turnout ahead to change tracks as it continues on its journey. Numerous rail fan's and photographer's are out and about enjoying the action scene. In this view you can see the engineer in his front cab window.

New Haven Railroad heavyweight round roof combo MUT trailer leads other powered MUT coaches eastbound along the electrified main line as enters the station platform area in Bridgeport, Connecticut, ca 1960. These Osgood-Bradley round roof MUTS built between 1926-1931 provided excellent service over the years. There were only two combo baggage coaches ordered. In this view you can really see the detail of the hair pin fence that separates the two express tracks from the station platform tracks. There are a couple people seen on the arriving train platform.

Southern Railway operated N&W J-class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 611, is departing the Amtrak Peachtree Station with a railfan excursion train in Atlanta, Georgiaa, May 1983. At this point the railfan excursion train is really starting to pick up speed as it departs the Atlanta area.

Southern Railway operated Norfolk & Western J-class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 611, view of fireman side while being serviced in the yard at Atlanta, Georgia, May 1983. At this time coal is to be loaded into the tender, while other workmen and steam crew members are performing their assigned tasks. The locomotive is being prepared for its next day assignment to a railfan excursion train.

Norfolk Southern operated N&W streamlined J-class 4-8-4 Northern coal burning steam locomotive# 611 with the details of the coupling between the tender and auxiliary water tender seen at Chattanooga, Tennessee, October 1989. Sometimes a view such as this is interesting for the detailed oriented model railroad fans.

Amtrak New Orleans bound Cresent lead EMD F40PHR locomotive # 262 is bing uncoupled from the train at the Peachtree Station platform in Altanta, Georgia, May 1983. At this time, the Crescent is being reduced in size prior to continuing to New Orleans. In the background on the upper level you can see the old Peachtree Station building that is used with the plaforms seen below. Much highway and new building construction was occurring in this area during this time period. You can see by the haze in the background that this was a hot day. In the foreground you can see the old out of service station platform roadway overpass bridge.

New Haven Railroad Depot with awaiting passengers and visitors being seen at Berkeley, R.I., May 24, 1935. It also appears that the parking lot is fairly well filled up with vehicles. Some of the people sitting near the open station baggage door may be employees.

CSX Railroad EMD SD70MAC locomotives # 700 & # 722 are seen while moving in the yard at Erwin, Tennessee 2006. A crewman is standing on the lead locomotives front porch steps and appears to be speaking with the engineer as the locomotives moved slowly down the track. Notice the older style CSX paint scheme that is applied to the lead locomotive, while the newer paint scheme has been applied to the trailing locomotive. At this time the yard had numerous manually operated switch machines that would be replaced with automated switch machines within two years due to the rebuilding of the yard.

New Haven Railroad ALCO S-1 DEY-3 class switcher # 0990 is seen handling heavyweight cars at an unknown location in what appears to be the electric zone, ca late 1950's. The first two heavyweight cars are painted in the Pullman two tone gray paint scheme. These cars may still be parlor cars, however, since they appear to be coupled to Pennsylvania Railroad cars they may in fact be Pullman's or then again rebuilt as of this time into coaches. It appears that on the right there is a spotted New Haven Office Car along side a newer stainless steel Pullman Osgood-Bradley car. Check out the late 1950's model cars located to the left. This photo came from my personal collection, however, the location and original photographer's name is unknown.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class ALCO 4-8-4 Northern steam loco # 8444, is seen after a photo run-by on main line in Colorado, July 26, 1980. In this view the cab engineer and a cab crew member can plainly be seen. Another rail fan photographer is capturing the scene. It is nice to see the rods almost in the full down position.

CSX GE locomotives U23B # 3255 & U18B # 1974, along with some gondolas are seen in the yard at Montgomery, Alabama,October 1991. This may be a local train that is stopped in the yard. Locomotive # 3255 is painted in the CSX (aka Stealth paint scheme), while locomotive # 1974 is painted in the SCL/L&N Family Lines paint scheme.

New Haven Railroad Y-3 class 0-8-0 steam switcher # 3421, is seen working freight cars in an unknown yard, ca late 1940's. The engineer has his head sticking out of the cab window while he watches the switch crew farther down the train. It appears that the locomotive is pushing the caboose and gondola ahead to couple with the box car. Perhaps some old timer may know of this specific location.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, is leading a rail fan excursion train on photo run-by with the herd looking on in Colorado, July 26, 1980. The train would shortly blast by my location, but I directly got into the clear after this photo was taken. The smoke was so thick that you could almost walk on it. Notice the interesting meter of sorts that's attached to the block signal.

CSX EMD SD40-2 locomotives 8469 & 8888 lead a northbound freight train on the S-line in Plant City, Florida, 2007, Fred Clark, Jr. The train is operating on a double ended siding in this area where it will shortly rejoin the single track main line to head to Vitis Junction and beyond. It appears that you can see the conductor or another crewman in the rear cab window. The block signal indicates clear track ahead. There are quite a few grade crossings in this area to contend with. Locomotive 8888 is somewhat famous in that it was involved with a run away freight train incident several years earlier in Ohio, from what I recall.

New Haven Railroad passenger station situated in the eastern portion of the state at Jewett City, Connecticut, 1931. The station was located on the New Haven Branch Line between the New London - Groton area and Worcester, Massachusetts. Check out the two semaphore long blade style orderboard signals at the station. At this time passenger service was provided on this line, however; eventually this line became a freight line only, but with occasional assignments of passenger trains to utilize the line at other times.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, is seen leading a rail fan excursion train along the main line on a photo run-by in Colorado, July 26, 1980. Most of the herd of rail fans and photographers was located about seven hundred feet further back from my position. A better position would be at the rear end of the train prior to any other people being in the scene for a clean capture.

Steamtown Museum display of Canadian National Railways 4-6-4T Baltic class X-10-a commuter steam locomotive # 47, built by MLW 1914, is seen at Scranton, Pennsylvania, October 1996. This is the only remaining 4-6-4T tank type steam locomotive remaining in the United States. This steam locomotive was used to haul local suburban commuter trains.

A station and platform is seen along the tourist railroad line near Wolfsboro, New Hampshire, August 1982. With a heavy overcast sky and poor lighting, along with it being evening, I was very fortunate to capture this image on film. It appears that on the right a wooden addition was constructed and added to the original stone station building.

New Haven Railroad electrified main line with an EMD FL-9 led early evening eastbound passenger train with sunlight shinning off the cars roof as seen from an overhead bridge location in Connecticut, 1968. In the background you can see two red signals on the westbound tracks.

In the background you may observe TOFC equipment, strings of box cars and closed autorack cars. Notice the MOW speeder located to the left.

Amtrak & Seaboard System Railroad locomotives are seen with their trains heading northbound at the Clifford Lane Staion in Jacksonville, Florida, November 1983. The Seaboard System train is being led by EMD SD40-2 # 8069, followed by another locomotive, is hauling a TOFC train on the mainline. The Amtrak train, led by F40PHR locomotive # 379, plus another locomotive, probably is the Silver Meteor at this late time in the afternoon. The engineer on the freight train is giving a wave to someone. The location is at the north end of the platform area.

CSX Railroad GE CW44AC locomotives # 34 & # 488 are seen while entering the North East end of the yard with a southbound loaded unit coal train at Erwin, Tennessee 2007. At this time there may have been twenty or more unit coal trains passing through Erwin in both directions within a 24 hour period, along with a few manifest freight trains and some local trains and switching moves. This was a very busy location back then, but the yard has now been closed due to the great reduction in coal traffic in this country. Am receiving a wave from the train's conductor out of his cab window. On the left there is some MOW equipment.

Norfolk Southern (N&W) A class 2-6-6-4 articulated steam locomotive # 1218, has just come to a stop after completing a photo run-by at a location near Fargo, Georgia, November 1987. In this view you can see the auxiliary water tender that is located behing the normal tender.

New Haven Railroad I-4 class ALCO 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive 1390, prepares for a railroad group excursion trip using a Deluxe Smoker Coach 6803, situated at a Union Station platform in New Haven, Connecticut, ca 1939. There is a good crowd of well dressed individuals on the platform. However; this may not be a group of railroad enthusiast, but in fact may be some railroad executives instead, perhaps going on an inspection trip. Within the platform crowd there is a big policeman standing on the platform looking over the scene. Since the marker lamps are mounted to the end of the Deluxe Smoking Coach, we know the train will only be one car long.
