Bob Hughes photographed this scene.

These steam engines developed 76,160 lbs of starting tractive effort and the booster provided an extra 13,200 lbs of tractive effort for a grand total of 89,360 lbs of starting tractive effort. Years later the locomotives did receive larger tenders.

Penn Central all black former New Haven Railroad EMD FL-9 # 5007 with its six car passenger train passes through the station platform area on an express track at Stamford, Connecticut 1970. This scene was actually captured under low lighting conditions and I brightened it up a bit to show the details. There were passengers standing on both platforms awaiting their arriving train. It appears that the first three cars on the train were former New Haven Railroad equipment but the last three cars are a mixed bag.
This photo image was captured by Bob Hughes, a former New Haven Railroad tower operator at SS38 in Stamford.
Denver & Rio Grande Western EMD SD40T-2 diesel electric locomotive # 5397, along with four other EMD locomotives, is seen leading unit coal train westbound on a main line Colorado, Summer 1980. This location is a short distance east of Moffat Tunnel. Check out the interesting block signal located on the left. You can see both the engineer and another cab crew member in the cab windows.
Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound eight car Rio Grande Zephyr led by EMD F9A locomotive # 5771 and two additional F9B locomotives is seen while operating on a main line curve in Utah while heading to Salt Lake City, Summer 1980. The sun is starting to set and the long shadows are out with the light dimming. The main line at this time was still constructed with conventional jointed section rail, but it was heavy rail. One of the interesting things observed when on this trip is that in each area that you passed through different colors in the scenery were seen.
Seaboard Coast Line caboose line up in various new & old paint schemes seen in the railroad yard at Mulberry, Florida, 3-26-1978, Fred Clark, Jr. The Family Lines System was a different name, however; it was still SCL.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is operating up a steep main line grade in the foot hills as it prepares to enter the front range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Summer 1980. This photo may not the best for quality, but it sure does show the step main line grades that the train encounters as it gains altitude. We have another passenger observer in the ahead vestibule dutch door window. In the area of the foot hill grades there are numerous ties being replaced by the MOW crews.
