One reason that flowering plants were able to diversify so dramatically and spread during the Cretaceous and Cenozoic, or modern, the era was the evolution of new structures and tissues such as the carpel, a womb-like vessel that encloses angiosperm seeds and endosperm, a placenta-like tissue that nourishes the young plant as it develop within the seed, Today, angiosperm dominate terrestrial life on the planet. At an estimated 422,000 species, they compose by far the largest group of plants. They grow in greater range of environments, exhibits a wider range of growth habits, and display more variation in form than any living group of plants. In size, angiosperm range from tiny duckweed to eucaplytuses more than 330 ft (100 m) tall. The explosion of angiosperm diversity has gone hand in hand with the proliferation of insect, birds, and other animals that pollinate their flowers, disperse their fruits and seeds, and eat their leaves.

Plants are multicellular, photosynthesizing eucaryotes. Most species occupy terrestrial environments, but they also occur in freshwater and saltwater aquatic environments. The oldest known land plants in the fossil record are Ordovician to Silurian. Land plant body fossils are known in Silurian sedimentary rocks - they are small and simple plants (e.g., Cooksonia). Fossil root traces in paleosol horizons are known in the Ordovician. During the Devonian, the first trees and forests appeared. Earth's initial forestation event occurred during the Middle to Late Paleozoic. Earth's continents have been partly to mostly covered with forests ever since the Late Devonian. Occasional mass extinction events temporarily removed much of Earth's plant ecosystems - this occurred at the Permian-Triassic boundary (251 million years ago) and the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (65 million years ago).

 

The most conspicuous group of living plants is the angiosperms, the flowering plants. They first unambiguously appeared in the fossil record during the Cretaceous. They quickly dominated Earth's terrestrial ecosystems, and have dominated ever since. This domination was due to the evolutionary success of flowers, which are structures that greatly aid angiosperm reproduction.

Euphorbia is a genus of plants belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. Consisting of about 2160 species, Euphorbia is one of the most diverse genera in the plant kingdom. Members of the family and genus are sometimes referred to as Spurges. The genus is primarily found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and the Americas, but also in temperate zones worldwide. Succulent species originate mostly from Africa, the Americas and Madagascar. There exists a wide range of insular species: on the Hawaiian Islands where spurges are collectively known as "akoko" [1], and on the Canary Islands as [2] [3]

 

The common name "spurge" derives from the Middle English/Old French espurge ("to purge"), due to the use of the plant's sap as a purgative.

 

The botanical name Euphorbia derives from Euphorbus, the Greek physician of king Juba II of Numidia (52-50 BC - 23 AD). He is reported to have used a certain plant, possibly Resin Spurge (E. resinifera), as a herbal remedy when the king suffered from a swollen belly[verification needed]. Carolus Linnaeus assigned the name Euphorbia to the entire genus in the physician's honor.[4]

 

Juba II himself was a noted patron of the arts and sciences and sponsored several expeditions and biological research. He also was a notable author, writing several scholarly and popular scientific works such as treatises on natural history or a best-selling traveller's guide to Arabia. Euphorbia regisjubae (King Juba's Euphorbia) was named to honor the king's contributions to natural history and his role in bringing the genus to notice.

The Leu House Museum located in the heart of the gardens reveals turn-of-the century living for the families who once called this home. The gardens and historical home were donated to the City of Orlando in 1961 by Mr. Harry P. Leu and his wife, Mary Jane.

 

The flowering plants (angiosperms), also known as Angiospermae Lindl or Magnoliophyta, are the most diverse group of land plants. Angiosperms are seed-producing plants like the gymnosperms and can be distinguished from the gymnosperms by a series of synapomorphies (derived characteristics). These characteristics include flowers, endosperm within the seeds, and the production of fruits that contain the seeds. Etymologically, angiosperm means a plant that produces seeds within an enclosure; they are fruiting plants, although more commonly referred to as flowering plants.

En biologie, chez les plantes à fleurs (angiospermes), la fleur constitue l'organe de la reproduction sexuée et l'ensemble des « enveloppes » qui l'entourent. Après la pollinisation, la fleur est fécondée et se transforme en fruit contenant les graines. Les fleurs peuvent être solitaires, mais elles sont le plus souvent regroupées en inflorescences.

Très tôt, les fleurs ont attiré l’attention de l’homme, qui les utilise et les cultive pour la parure (couronne de fleurs), pour l’ornementation intérieure (fleurs coupées, bouquets, ikebana) et extérieure (jardins, plates-bandes, etc.) ainsi que pour leurs odeurs et pigments. Les fleurs ont souvent inspiré les artistes, peintres, poètes, sculpteurs et décorateurs. La culture des fleurs est la floriculture, une branche de l'horticulture.

La plupart des fleurs sont hermaphrodites, c'est-à-dire qu'elles ont à la fois des organes reproducteurs mâles et femelles : elles ont un pistil et des étamines. le calice, formé par l'ensemble des sépales ;

la corolle, formée par l'ensemble des pétales ;

l'androcée, c'est-à-dire l'ensemble des étamines (partie mâle), qui produit le pollen ;

le gynécée ou pistil, formé par l'ensemble des carpelles (partie femelle).

Calice et corolle forment le périanthe, enveloppe stérile, qui joue un rôle protecteur pour les pièces fertiles, et attractif pour les animaux pollinisateurs.

Ce plan théorique de la fleur, que l'on trouve typiquement chez le bouton d'or (Renonculacées), est sujet à de nombreuses variations. On rencontre par exemple des fleurs sans pétales, dites « apétales ». Une fleur mixte est une fleur qui possède à la fois étamines et pistil.

« La fleur double est celle dont quelqu'une des parties est multipliée au-delà de son nombre naturel, mais sans que cette multiplication nuise à la fécondation. Les fleurs se doublent rarement par le calice, presque jamais par les étamines. Leur multiplication la plus commune se fait par la corolle. Les exemples les plus fréquents sont dans les fleurs polypétales, comme œillets, anémones, renoncules ; les fleurs monopétales doublent moins communément. Soit que le nombre des pétales devienne double, triple, quadruple, etc., tant qu'ils ne multiplient pas au point d'étouffer la fructification, la fleur garde toujours le nom de fleur double ; mais, lorsque les pétales trop multipliés font disparaître les étamines et avorter le germe, alors la fleur perd le nom de fleur double et prend celui de fleur pleine. »

Sticky Monkey Flower, Diplacus Aurantiacus. (Angiosperm) Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees feast in the springtime bounty of nectar and pollen they produce, and this is one way the plant is dispersed. When the plant senses the absence of pollen, the stigma will reopen. The stigma will continue to open and close until pollen is finally deposited. It can be found from south Oregon to most of California. California's most widespread plant communities - coastal scrub, chaparral, oak woodland, mixed evergreen forest, or coniferous forest - will likely yield several sightings. They are not fussy about soil type, growing naturally in shales, sandstones, decomposed granite, and alluvium, but good drainage is critical. Depending upon annual rainfall, the flowering season can last from late winter through mid-summer. The plants invariably shut down once available soil moisture is depleted, a sign of their adaptation to California's long dry season. In places where coastal fog adds significant moisture, plants may blossom sporadically year-round.

There are multiple populations. The nearest mating members were along the pathway leading towards the coast. It's randomly distributed. It's located in this area because the moisture from the fog and from the beach make it an adaptable place for the plant to live in, and it isn't too picky about it's soil either. I think the population I am observing is a source; the Sticky Monkey Flower can also be found near Lake Merced (from what I've seen).

I saw about 7 different bushes of sticky monkey flower within the area.

In 5 cycles, r=.7; in 20 cycles, r= .175

The population should grow overtime; if the conditions stay the same, then the area should become more fruitful, that is, taking into consideration of hummingbirds and bees.

Tulips are Old World flowering plants, but their colorful, attractive flowers have resulted in widespread cultivation by humans. Tulip flowers have only one color each. Bicolored tulips, such as the example seen above, were noticed and highly valued centuries ago in Europe, especially Holland (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania ). Such flowers are called "breaking tulips", with feathery or flame-like patterns. The coloration pattern of breaking tulips is a symptom of a plant disease caused by a species of Potyvirus called the tulip breaking virus. Modern tulip hybridization efforts have resulted in non-diseased tulips that mimic breaking tulips. The individual shown above is an example.
