gray buckwheat, Eriogonum villiflorum, Nevada, Schell Creek Range, Sidehill Pass, Cave Valley drainage, elevation 1850 m (6065 ft).
Speaking of favorites, this little buckwheat has grown on me since I've worked in Nevada. It is endemic to lower slopes of the carbonate mountain ranges of the eastern Great Basin, in western Utah and eastern Nevada. It seems to be reasonably common within that limited range, but is easily overlooked, especially when not in flower.

When you rely on the written literature you'd think that Disa ornithantha and D. erubescens are very similar. I had never seen either of them before so it was a bit of a surprise to see how recognizably different they looked in the field. The most prominent difference is that in size. D. ornithantha, though certainly not small, is less than half the size of D. erubescens. I also prefer the colour of D. ornithantha which is a much deeper red and probably was one of the most striking and stunning species we saw during our Nyika trip.
Violets have two kinds of flowers. Some of their flowers grow aboveground, and others, like the ones shown here, live out their life cycle under the surface. These cleistogamous flowers are self-fertilizing. This kind of flower is found in many species, but they contribute to the potential weediness of violets in designed landscapes. Between spreading vegetatively and their cleistogamous flowers, violets can be an unwanted pest in the garden.
