Water lilies are a well studied clade of plants because their large flowers with multiple unspecialized parts were initially considered to represent the floral pattern of the earliest flowering plants, and later genetic studies confirmed their evolutionary position as basal angiosperms. Analyses of floral morphology and molecular characteristics and comparisons with a sister taxon, the family Cabombaceae, indicate, however, that the flowers of extant water lilies with the most floral parts are more derived than the genera with fewer floral parts. Genera with more floral parts, Nuphar, Nymphaea, Victoria, have a beetle pollination syndrome, while genera with fewer parts are pollinated by flies or bees, or are self- or wind-pollinated Thus, the large number of relatively unspecialized floral organs in the Nymphaeaceae is not an ancestral condition for the clade.

Ilex or holly is a genus of over 570 species of flowering plants in the family Aquifoliaceae, and the only living genus in that family. Ilex has the most species of any woody dioecious angiosperm genus. The species are evergreen or deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers from tropics to temperate zones worldwide. The type species is Ilex aquifolium, the common European holly used in Christmas decorations and cards.

Galega officinalis, commonly known as galega or goat's-rue, is a herbaceous plant in the subfamily Faboideae of the legume family Fabaceae. It is native to parts of northern Africa, western Asia and Europe, but is widely cultivated and naturalised elsewhere. The plant has been extensively cultivated as a forage crop, an ornamental, a bee plant, and as green manure.
G. officinalis is rich in galegine, a substance with blood glucose-lowering activity and the foundation for the discovery of metformin, Italian fitch, a treatment for managing symptoms of diabetes mellitus. In ancient herbalism, goat's-rue was used as a diuretic. It can be poisonous to mammals, but is a food for various insects.

Thistle species are quite challenging to identify, as many produce virtually identical-looking flowers, and overlap in other traits too. So I'm not sure what species this one is. I saw only a handful of them in Joshua Tree National Park, and only in Hidden Valley.
Thistle flowers can be very pretty, in sharp contrast to the rest of the plant. They can be truly vicious if you're out gardening and don't have thick protective clothing. đ

Heliconia psittacorum is a perennial herb native to the
Caribbean and South America. It is considered native to French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. It is reportedly naturalized in Gambia, Thailand, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, Jamaica and the Lesser Antilles. It is often cultivated as a tropical ornamental plant in regions outside its native range. Unlike most species of plants that require the use of pollinators for pollination the H. Psittacorum naturally prefers the absence of pollinators for pollination. In other words, it is well capable of pollinating itself, any use of pollinators can do more harm than good. The flower has both male parts and female parts, also referred to as a hermaphroditic angiosperm.

Non-native - Invasive Plant
Purple loosestrife is herbaceous plant that belongs to the loosestrife family. It originates from Europe and Asia. Purple loosestrife was introduced to North America during the 19th century. Soon afterwards, it managed to occupy the entire continent. Purple loosestrife is classified as noxious weed in almost all countries of the USA and Canada. It grows in the moist habitats such as marshes, areas near the streams, lakes, ditches and canals. Some varieties of purple loosestrife are cultivated in ornamental purposes and used in folk medicine.
