Following my appt at NYU College of Dentistry, as is typically me, I wandered around the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, NYC, photographing. Many times I enjoy taking photos of trash, garbage and discarded street items. I find art in all types of stuff. And I found this specific piece amongst a pile of discarded objects. I could only see the back part, and as I turned it over with my foot, thinking it was plastic, I immediately realized how it was a heavy metal. And upon lifting it up off of the pavement I knew without a doubt that it was iron. I am a collector of iron objet d'art.

Upon researching I learned the following:

Vintage cast iron doorstops shaped like the iconic Portland Head Light in Maine are popular collector items. Often painted to match the real lighthouse, these heavy, solid-metal pieces generally measure between 5 inches and 12 inches tall. They were first cast around 1920 by various metal-ware makers.

Because they are vintage or antique, prices vary widely depending on the condition of the original paint.

The piece I found is 12 inches tall and weighs about 3-4 pounds. Thankfully I had a sturdy tote bag with me. Hence, I carried it several blocks to the subway, and all the way back to Queens and up to the humble abode. And the paint looks pretty intact. It's too nice to sell.

Portland Head Light (about/history)

Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light station sits on a headland at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. Completed in 1791, it was the first lighthouse built by the U.S. government and is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The light station is automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the United States Coast Guard, while the former lighthouse keeper's house is a maritime museum within Fort Williams Park.

Construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington and was completed on January 10, 1791, using a fund of $1,500, established by him. Whale oil lamps were originally used for illumination. In 1855, following the formation of the Lighthouse Board, a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed; that lens was replaced by a second-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced later by an aerobeacon in 1958. That lens was replaced with a DCB-224 aerobeacon in 1991. The DCB-224 aerobeacon is still in use.

In pop-culture:

Edward Hopper painted the lighthouse in 1927. His watercolor resides at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.

This is very significant as they're upgrading sidewalk access by installing Pedestrian Ramps for strollers, wheelchairs, and older and or disabled citizens. This area is presently undergoing a huge building boom, and this is another green light for them to continue

Just weird. Several times per week I happen upon pairs of shoes just sitting off by themselves. Lately I've seen some even in boxes. This is the second instance of shoes being placed out front of this same house. I don't get it.

On August 16, 2025 I shall turn 63. Pretty amazing. I feel really good

Been having my Bengali barber (I live in a small Bengali enclave) shave my head every 3rd Sunday. Feels great. They don't use shaving cream, instead, they massage an oil into your scalp after which they shave it with a straight razor. Really wicked

"Keep It Movin'!!", designed by LaGuardia Community College's Fine Arts student Fernanda Contreras, is one of NYC's largest street murals, unveiled on October 6, 2025, on the 29th Street "LaGuardia Community Greenway" in Long Island City, Queens. Covering 17,000 sq ft, it spans 29th Street (between 47th Ave & Skillman Ave) with designs celebrating local subway lines and NYC walkability.

Project Name: "Keep It Movin'!!"

Location: 29th Street, between 47th Ave & Skillman Avenue, Long Island City, Queens (outside LaGuardia Community College).

Designer: Fernanda Contreras, LaGuardia Community College Fine Arts student.

Size: 17,000 square feet.

Features:The mural transforms a former roadway into a pedestrian plaza, featuring designs representing the 7, G, E, F, and N/R/W subway lines.

Background: The project, created in partnership with the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), was a collaborative effort involving, among others, the LaGuardia Community College President Society.

Purpose: To beautify public spaces and create a vibrant, safe pedestrian area for students and the local community.
