This building wall-art on the corner of Jackson and Sansome streets in San Francisco, Ca. reminded me of an arcade video game from the 1980's known as Qbert. I used to work on video games in the 1980's as a technician. Back then, Arcade Video Games made money like slot machines, but had no payout. It was a crazy time.

History of the site:

After 40 years in business the Neptune Diner located in Astoria, Queens, NYC served its last meal on Sunday, July 29. 2024. The owners claimed they were not given a chance to renew their lease, because the property will soon be turned into a residential building.

Since 1983, The Katsihtis brothers have owned the building on Astoria Boulevard but not the land, which was sold in 2018 for over $10 million.

The brothers also had a 35-year lease which expired in 2019. But since then, they were not able to come to a long-term agreement with the landlord.

But that's what Long Island City/Astoria needs is another apartment building. It's already so overbuilt, it's ridiculous. Yet they keep tearing them down and building new ones, many of which are luxury rentals. The neighborhood is losing its character to steel and glass.

The Greenstreets program converts paved, vacant traffic islands, and medians into green spaces filled with trees, shrubs, and groundcover in an effort to capture stormwater.

The program is a part of the NYC Green Infrastructure Plan. All funding for Greenstreet construction under this plan is administered by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Android phone + Instagram = Images that I normally don't get to capture. This is a shallow lake off the back end of a country road that I pass whenever I pick up or return dogs to K9 Heeler, a boarding place not far from my house. Taken from my New Dog Lady Van. Battled mosquitoes to get the shot!

NOTE:

I've had 18 members of my husband's family at my house, with the first folks arriving June 18th and the last folks leaving on June 26th. On June 22nd, Friday night, 16 people were sleeping at our house, not counting the dogs! I've been taking photos on my phone and on my camera but haven't had any time (Feeding 21 people three squares a day is challenge, although they all help out!). Just wanted my Flickr Friends to know that I'll be back in touch very soon!

Completed in 1917, the Queens Blvd viaduct runs for an eighth of a mile along the center of Queens Boulevard between 32nd Pl. and 47th Street. Its most defining feature is the hundreds of arches with a mysterious resonance that changes from the center of each arch to their edges; at points the echoes overlap, propelling the resonance back and forth between each arch — something that can only be experienced to believe. This Resonant Space is a NYC treasure.

Following my appt at NYU College of Dentistry, as is typically me, I wandered around the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, NYC, photographing. Many times I enjoy taking photos of trash, garbage and discarded street items. I find art in all types of stuff. And I found this specific piece amongst a pile of discarded objects. I could only see the back part, and as I turned it over with my foot, thinking it was plastic, I immediately realized how it was a heavy metal. And upon lifting it up off of the pavement I knew without a doubt that it was iron. I am a collector of iron objet d'art.

Upon researching I learned the following:

Vintage cast iron doorstops shaped like the iconic Portland Head Light in Maine are popular collector items. Often painted to match the real lighthouse, these heavy, solid-metal pieces generally measure between 5 inches and 12 inches tall. They were first cast around 1920 by various metal-ware makers.

Because they are vintage or antique, prices vary widely depending on the condition of the original paint.

The piece I found is 12 inches tall and weighs about 3-4 pounds. Thankfully I had a sturdy tote bag with me. Hence, I carried it several blocks to the subway, and all the way back to Queens and up to the humble abode. And the paint looks pretty intact. It's too nice to sell.

Portland Head Light (about/history)

Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light station sits on a headland at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. Completed in 1791, it was the first lighthouse built by the U.S. government and is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The light station is automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the United States Coast Guard, while the former lighthouse keeper's house is a maritime museum within Fort Williams Park.

Construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington and was completed on January 10, 1791, using a fund of $1,500, established by him. Whale oil lamps were originally used for illumination. In 1855, following the formation of the Lighthouse Board, a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed; that lens was replaced by a second-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced later by an aerobeacon in 1958. That lens was replaced with a DCB-224 aerobeacon in 1991. The DCB-224 aerobeacon is still in use.

Edward Hopper painted the lighthouse in 1927. His watercolor resides at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.
