Miki Ando of Japan competes in the Ladies Free Skating during the ISU World Team Trophy 2009 Day 3 at Yoyogi National Gymnasium on April 18, 2009 in Tokyo, Japan.
Miki Ando performing her freeskate to Rome and Marco Polo at the Stars, Stripes and Skates benefit on September 26. The event was to raise money for The Heritage Foundation of 9/11 and Miki and others took time out from their busy training schedule for this worthy cause. The two-time Japanese national champion, 2007 World champion and 2009 World bronze medalist also took time before the show to chat with me about preparations for this Olympic year and her programs this season.

Ando's famous church in Osaka is an essay in concrete and light, nestled in a fairly typical residential neighbourhood.
"In all my works, light is an important controlling factor," says Ando. "I create enclosed spaces mainly by means of thick concrete walls. The primary reason is to create a place for the individual, a zone for oneself within society. When the external factors of a city's environment require the wall to be without openings, the interior must be especially full and satisfying... Walls are the most basic elements of architecture, but they can also be the most enriching."
"A smooth surface was achieved by adopting a dense engineering quality mix with a slump less than 15cm (6in) and by ensuring thorough vibration with a minimum cover for the reinforcing bars of 5cm (2in) to avoid weathering problems and staining. The density of the concrete results in a glass-like surface that registers the different qualities of light, and tends to dematerialize it. Because Ando's concrete is so precisely wrought, so smooth and reflective, it produces an illusion of a taut, textile surface rather than presenting it as a heavy earthbound mass. Ando has his own teams of expert carpenters to make the formwork who compete against each other; even so, his walls contain imperfections and are uneven." The story starts with Matsushima Reiji - a famous physics professor who receives a list of homicide cases which mentions the name of the victims along with the time and place of death. On the list is his and his fianceé's name (Asahi) showing that they are next in line to be killed.
Reiji does indeed end up being killed and next on the target list is his fianceé but a mysterious guy named Lloyd who looks exactly like Reiji suddenly appears before her - he tells her that his mission to protect and prevent her from dying...
