A rare lorry shot from my lens - leaving Dunbar on the run is 1932 Leyland Cub SX3505 . 26/8/79.
Unusually for Dunbar, there was no sun for the '79 rally.
Ten more shots of the run will follow.
This RT was unique amongst the many RT-family buses that operated with County Durham independents in being of the 'pre-war' type with a distinctive curved lower edge to the windscreen. FXT 202 was new to London Transport in 1940. it was acquired by Anderson Bros of Evenwood in 1956 and withdrawn in 1958, two years before the business was sold to OK Motor Services of Bishop Auckland. I'm not 100% sure about the colours; Anderson's buses had originally been two-tone blue (described by my Uncle as Bishop Auckland football team colours). The company also operated two Leyland RTLs as previously illustrated (02-Jun-16).

I have never seen an original colour photograph of this operator so there is an element of guesswork, guided by word of mouth and the tonal information in monochrome photographs. JXN 338 was new as London Transport RTL 18 in 1948. One of two RTLs acquired by Anderson Bros of Evenwood in 1958, it passed to OK Motor Services of Bishop Auckland with Anderson's business in 1960 and operated for a further ten years before withdrawal and disposal in 1970. FXT 202 (to the left) will be featured separately at a later date (updated 22-May-16).

Stephenson Brothers of High Etherley operated services from Bishop Auckland to Witton Park and, jointly with Anderson (Blue Belle), OK Motor Services and Lockeys, to West Auckand and Evenwood. All four operators on the latter route standardised on ex-London RT-family buses in the late 1950s and, until Anderson sold out to OK in 1960, it was possible to see these vehicles in four different liveries. Only Stephenson and OK purchased examples of the wider RTW variant. Stephensons sold its stage carriage licences to OK in 1970 but initially retained its vehicles for contract work. KGK 522 was new as London Transport RTW22 in 1949. It operated with Stephensons from 1966 to 1970 and was, reportedly, converted to a goods vehicle by a subsequent owner (updated 13-May-16).

Typical of many coaches in the independent sector, SME 229 passed through several hands during its 13 year history. New in 1947 to T Gibson (Lily Coaches) of Lower Edmonton London N9 in 1949, it was sold to Hall Bros of South Shields in 1947. In 1955, it moved on again to Blue Belle (Anderson Bros) of Evenwood, in whose livery it is illustrated here. It lasted five years with Blue Belle until sold for scrap in 1960 (14-Feb-14).

This is a digitally-coloured version of an original monochrome view by Alan Cross (no copyright infringement intended, so please let me know if you are the current legal copyright holder). PHN 429 was a Bedford SB with a 33-seat Plaxton Venturer coach body. It was supplied new to Anderson Bros ‘Blue Belle’ of Evenwood in County Durham, one of four operators then sharing the Bishop Auckland-Evenwood stage carriage service. It was the first to sell out to OK Motor Services in 1960, which became the sole operator on the route after acquiring Stephenson Bros in 1970 and F Lockey & Sons in 1983 respectively. PHN was not included in the sale to OK Motor Services but saw further use with two subsequent operators before final withdrawal in 1967 (23-Aug-19).

This lovely period view was kindly provided by the Anderson family for use in David Holding's OK Motor Services book (Bus Enthusiast Publishing), for which I prepared the photographic content. In the event, the original monochrome view was used rather than this digitally-coloured version, which is a pity as few people will remember Anderson's colours. This is my best guess based on what I've been told, but the lighter blue could possibly have been cream or even silver (the company had a Bedford SB/Duple which, in monochrome, appears to have a metallic finish).
NHN 323 was a Bedford OB with a Mulliner body to, what in later years would be termed, dual-purpose specification. It was one of a pair (NHN 326/7) purchased new in 1960. Both lasted until the company's sale to OK Motor Services in 1960 but neither entered the latter's fleet. After passing through the hands of another operator, NHN 326 spend some time with Barnard Castle coaches before disposal to a dealer in 1962. It was scrapped the following year (20-Feb-10).

The Bishop Auckland to Evenwood route was shared by four operators who, at one point, all operated former London Transport RTLs. There was to have been a fifth operator but The Eden of West Auckland chose not to take up its share of the licences. OK Motor Services progressively increasing its share by acquiring the other operators or their licences.
The first to sell out in 1960 was Anderson Bros of Evenwood, who traded as Blue Belle. Anderson's buses had originally been two-tone blue, but a light blue and cream livery had been adopted by the time that this former Newcastle Corporation Daimler CWA6 arrived. Seen near the terminus in Bishop Auckland, it was acquired in January 1957 but only lasted until the end of the year.
This digitally coloured image was prepared several years ago for a third party who intended to use it in a local history book, which was never completed. The copyright details provided to me unfortunately differ from those accompanying a black & White version on another site. All I can add at this point is that my version was prepared in good faith and without financial gain.

This ex-Maidstone & District 1950 Bristol L6A is depicted in original livery elsewherein this Flickr collection. It was acquired by Stephensons in 1963 after two years service with J Batty & Company of Morpeth. It stayed five years with Stephensons before sale to Maidstone-based preservationists, with whom I believe it remains.
The source image by Alan Cross depicts it at the Bondgate terminus of Stephenson's stage service to Witton Park. The company's only other stage service was a part-share of the Bishop Auckland to Evenwood route. Both routes passed to OK Motor Services in 1970 but, unlike the Blue Belle and Lockeys take-overs, no vehicles changed hands (20-Mar-10).

For background information about the Blue Belle company, please refer to the notes under the Daimler CWA6. This view shows an earlier vehicle in the original two-tone blue livery. AOU 268 was a 1937 Leyland TD4, which was new to Southampton Corporation with a Park Royal body. It was one of the first pair of double-decker acquired by Blue Belle in 1951 and lasted until scrapped in 1958. Similar CTR 505 ran in its former Southampton livery for some time and may not have been repainted before withdrawal in 1956. This view of AOU 268, which is believed to be by Alan B Cross, was taken in West Auckland near the former Eden garage in the early 1950s (15-Sep-09).

Picked up this postcard on eBay recently. I believe that is Cabin #1 in the foreground. We stayed in that one once and a bat flew inside and scared the crap out of my mom while my dad and sister and I were at the Pow Wow in Lac du Flambeau...
A woman whose grandparents owned the resort for several years said that the cabin at the right was quite old, in fact, it was originally owned by the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Company.
