Those that were paying attention at the start, may have noticed a folder labeled "analysis" in my layers panel. what is it doing there?
This was an idea I got from Aaron Nace at Phlearn, which uses display modes to let you analyse the distribution of hue and saturation in your photo. This was useful to me. as I wanted the area illuminated by the lighthouse to be more saturated and to have this captured on the closest waves but at distance to really cut this back to further emphasise the lighthouse as a sort of colour-based sanctuary from this black and imposing storm.
He explain the process, technique and purpose for all this in this video, and it's well worth watching.
The first image is my photo with just the colour information displayed, no other values.
As you can see the colour is indeed centre on the lighthouse and it's light, and this is on purpose.
You might think with the subject being all dressed up with a tie, vest and one of those philospher's pipes - that he was headed to a hoity toity party - but he does have a shirt matching mohawk, and a beer - therefore - as the commercial says - he's living the high life!

Critical analysis
Overall I believe the animation came out satisfactory but it could have been much better, I find doing Maya animation quite tedious so getting motivation to put 100% effort into it has been a struggle. I think I achieved what I aimed to with the modelling and texturing of the spring, however I am still a bit unsure about the colour of the eyelids and body of the spring. The rig worked in all aspects apart from the hands which was extremely confusing. This meant animating the spring took twice as long as keeping the hands in check was quite time consuming and problematic, every time I moved the body, the hands seemed to move in strange ways.
I think I did well conveying emotion 100% via the eyes as I decided not to add a mouth, eyebrows or other facial features. I focused mainly on the blinking to show the spring was thinking and used the direction the eyes are looking to convey what the spring is thinking about. The main issue of giving the animation a sense of realism was getting the bouncing to look cartoony while still looking real, I did this by adding a slightly exaggerated style of stretching and squashing.
The first few bounces I’m quite proud of as they worked really well however the final bounce and landing is a bit strange but I didn’t have time to rectify the problem. When the spring is trying to lift the heavy object I used the subtle movements of the hands to show preparation and to show the loss of grip I used a combination of subtle hand shaking and the eyelids with a combination of eye rotation. At the end I added a comedic look at the camera in true Warner Bothers cartoon style to show that the spring knew he was doomed.
We start off 2024 strong by opening a box that has been sitting around since Black Friday, Figma 527 Ange, part of the Armour Modelling series. She, along with her compatriot Lanna make up the "Plastic Angels", a part of characters created by none other than fan favourite Shunya Yamashita.
This set was never actually on my list as it wasn't cheap, but a BBTS sale took care of that part of things.
If you look closely, you'll be able to make out the theme of this character - model making. Lanna comes with Snippers and a few other things along with the same Desk and Chair. The scantily clad-ness of the character I get, being a Shunya Yamashita creation and all, but the Pug... I got nothing other than I guess its cute.
Speaking of, if you've seen enough Shunya Yamashita stuff, you'll instantly recognize this as one of their designs, particularly around the hair and the face. Ange is cute for sure, and GSC did a pretty good job at capturing those typical features.
So despite my focal point on photos, Ange actually starts off dressed.. sort of. `Her jacket is actually more like a cape with a pair of sleeved arms, which of course you can swap out for something more.. natural.
Overall, sculpting on the figure is pretty much where I would expect it for a Figma product.
Articulation is pretty average, even without the the bulky outfit on. It would technically be above average, as this figure actually ahs a functional waist swivel, but it loses marks IMO as it doesn't feature pull down hips, something that a figure that comes with a chair for sitting in really needs. Otherwise, your typical articulation needs will be met with this figure, particularly since this is very much a non combat oriented figure.
Paint Application and Build Quality are also on point for a Figma product. Colours are bright and cheery, and more importantly, applied with minimal errors. Build wise, the most controversial thing I could find on this set is that I wish it was easier to get that one hand to hold the Scapel and Paint Brush, but that could just be me and my sausage fingers.
