I had a bloodstain pattern analysis lab session today and was able to bring home one of the tests we did. What you're looking at is drops of horse blood on a rough surface (in this case sandpaper) dropped from the height of a metre. The point of this was to demonstrate how the shape and size of blood drops changes depending on the characteristics of the surface they land on.
One of the problems of taking things apart and seeing how they work - supposing you're trying to find out how a cat works--you take that cat apart to see how it works, what you've got in your hands is a non-working cat. The cat wasn't a sort of clunky mechanism that was susceptible to our available tools of analysis. --Douglas Adams

We created a list of heuristics and applied a severity rating scale. We conducted the analysis, filled out the checklist, and came back together as a group to discuss the results. In describing heuristic analysis, Jakob Nielsen noted that a single evaluator will fall short of catching the majority of usability issues during a heuristic evaluation. This was confirmed when each group member brought up problems that the others had missed.
