I really like the fine vermiculation pattern on the back and side pocket feathers.

Teals are normally very skittish, but this one posed nicely before following her mate into the reeds.

A Pintail convention.
From April, 2022. I didn't even bother to finish processing this image. It was dark and noisy, and I couldn't make it presentable then. The new Camera Raw tools are great.
Pintails are the first migratory duck to arrive on the central prairies. They usually get here before the ice has melted from the sloughs. This is the the first time I photographed a large number on the ice.
There are two male Green-winged Teals on the upper right of the photo, and two female Green-winged Teals closer to the center in the middle.

Beautiful feathers.
I have been spending a lot of time lately trying to get shots of preening ducks. I was hoping to get the exposed dorsal view of this wing at the right light angle. When their attention is on the enderside of a wing, they lift the scapular feathers and extend the opposte side of the wing to get down undeneath it.

The Eurasian teal (Anas crecca), common teal, or Eurasian green-winged teal is a common and widespread duck which breeds in temperate Eurosiberia and migrates south in winter. The Eurasian teal is often called simply the teal due to being the only one of these small dabbling ducks in much of its range. The bird gives its name to the blue-green colour teal.
It is a highly gregarious duck outside the breeding season and can form large flocks. It is commonly found in sheltered wetlands and feeds on seeds and aquatic invertebrates.
