Anas platyrhynchos (Stockente)

The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is the most widespread duck species in the world and can be found in almost all types of water bodies across Europe, from park ponds to large lakes and rivers. The male in breeding plumage is recognizable by its glossy green head and yellow bill, while the female has a brown mottled plumage that provides camouflage. A characteristic feature of both sexes is the blue-violet wing patch bordered with white. Mallards are omnivores, dabbling for aquatic plants and feeding on seeds, insects, and small animals. In cities they also readily accept food from humans, although this is not healthy for them. In spring, the female lays seven to twelve eggs in a nest near the shore, and the ducklings are precocial, able to swim shortly after hatching.
