KASHMIR IN CRISIS, CIVILIANS HOSTAGE TO SECURITY FORCES

A Dharna to register protest against killings of Innocent Civilians in

Kashmir at Jantar Mantar was organised by ANHAD. The dharna was two

hour long where representatives from various civil society groups

gathered to demonstrate their solidarity with the people of Kashmir.

Following people expressed their views in protest: Shabnam Hashmi

(ANHAD), Harsh Kapoor (South Asia Citizens Web), Navaid Hamid

(Member,NIC), Prof. Kamal Mitra Chenoy (JNU), Prof. Anuradha Chenoy

(JNU), Tanveer Hussain Khan (ANHAD), Indu Prakash (IGSSS), Madhu

Chandra (North Eastern Helpline), Divya (YWCA), Sanjay Kumar (AAA),

Amitabh Pandey (Free Lancer), Ravi Himadri (The other Media), Prof.

Rizwan Kaisar (Jamia Millia Islamia), Swami Agnivesh, Mansi Sharma

(ANHAD), Seema Duhan (ANHAD). The following statement was released to

the Media.

It is a matter of grave concern and anguish that no sensitive measures

have been taken by the Central Government in response to the ongoing

deaths, injuries and killings in cold-blood of civilians in Srinagar

and Anantnag districts of Jammu and Kashmir, including young girls and

boys, most of them innocent, peaceful protestors, or even just

bystanders. And consequently both North and South regions of the

valley are on flame. To make matters worse, the Army, along with

para-military forces, have been issued orders to shoot at sight to

uphold the almost relentless curfew -- basically to block protests

against the continuing spiral of non-stop and indiscriminate killings

of innocent civilians. The presence of army and security forces

dominates the Valley and reinforces the deep-rooted angst of people.

The reality is that democracy is under severe strain and is almost

absent in many parts in this state, despite an elected government

backed by the Centre holding the reigns of power at Srinagar.

ANHAD and many other concerned civil society groups in India want the

governments in the state and Centre to come out clean -- urgently and

immediately -- and explain if this is indeed a democratic and

constitutional method of handling a manifold and multiplying crisis in

a highly sensitive region. Obviously, the establishment thinks that

branding it as mere law and order problem and repression and killings

would 'calm down' the situation as sensitive and grim as that of Jammu

and Kashmir. This will be like choking tens of thousands of people

into the silence of absolute suffering and blind rage. Will this

violence ever stop, and will we ever find the root causes for a

political solution based on consensus, understanding, mutual harmony

and human rights?

Tuesday began with protests against one death which led to the second

death and then suddenly, Srinagar was back under curfew. The cycle of

violence has spun out of control all over again. Last week witnessed a

similar series of killings taking its toll in Anantnag district where

people were killed in clashes with security forces since they were not

allowed to protest against the killings of civilians. This has become

a tragic and vicious circle of hopelessness.

Instead of issuing any statement of sympathy or concern or wisdom, our

highest offices of governance in the country, are only pushing for an

escalation in the number of deployment of security forces. This

clearly indicates the callous attitude of the governments in Delhi and

Srinagar. Such acts of brutality are in complete violation of the law

of the land and constitutional rights of the people that have resulted

in mass outrage and alienation of large sections of the civilian

population in Kashmir.

These are unarmed, non-violent citizens, who are being treated with

such blatant and indiscriminate use of military force -- why? Is there

no other way to negotiate with civil unrest? And what is the root

cause of this civil unrest if not the brutalities executed by the

police and para military forces? And what about cases of atrocities

committed on people who are not even protesting?

There is no excuse for such cruelty. Despite repeated assurances by

the central and state governments of zero tolerance towards human

rights violations, the fact remains that little has been done to

punish those responsible for such heinous and gross violations. This

organised insensitivity and vacillation to act firmly against such

elements is bound to put a question mark on the credibility of the

State and its track record in terms of human and democratic rights of

the people, as enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Mere rhetoric and

institution of official enquiries is not enough to restore the

shattered and shaken confidence of the people. It is imperative that

the central and state authorities take firm and visible action against

those responsible for unleashing this brutish violence on innocent

people. Any delay will only compound the alienation and anger of the

people -- resulting in irrefutable damage to the peace process in the

Valley and elsewhere in the state.

ANHAD expresses serious concern over the absolute antipathy and lack

of political initiative displayed by the UPA-led central government in

response to the situation in the valley. They should learn some

lessons from history. People cannot be won over or suppressed at gun

point. Certainly, the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve a more

rational, humane, visionary and sensitive response from the Indian

State.

We demand from the Central and the State governments to:

Take immediate action to prevent further loss of life and property

Put an end to the violence perpetrated by the security forces with

immediate effect.

Immediately appoint an independent and impartial time bound Commission

of Enquiry to look into the killings of peaceful civilians & human

rights violations

Initiate an inquiry into instances of attacks on ambulance services

Ensure security of the journalists both of local and national media

Ensure freedom of expression and press

Immediately start a political dialogue with various stake holders

A vendor on a beach at Utorda in South Goa. The ice cream is branded as "Big B" and is a take off on the great Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan who has always been called by that moniker

Big B

Utorda beach is clean and wonderful in winter. A restaurant going by the name of "Zeebop" is the rage and has a most amazing setting right on the sands. It is a comfortable spot compared to restaurants like Brittos and others on the North Goa Beaches of Baga Calangute etc as it is not festering with aggressive peddlars of junk. The food is good most times but the last time I was there 3 nights ago they made a hash of the Beef chilly fry goan style. They served a better version later but this is what Zeebop is.....excellent setting and ambience but food can be patchy. Brittos the rage of the restaurants in North Goa, on the other hand will give you good food day in day out. Cheers !! Hic !!!

About Mr Arvind Kejriwal

From Wikipedia

Arvind Kejriwal (born 16 August 1968) is an Indian politician and the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi. Born in Haryana, Kejriwal is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He worked for the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as a Joint Commissioner in the Income Tax Department. He is well-known for his role in drafting a proposed Jan Lokpal Bill and his efforts to bring and implement the Right to Information (RTI) act at grassroots level.

Kejriwal won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership in 2006 for his contribution to the enactment of the Right to Information Act and for his efforts to empower the poorest citizens of India. In 2006, after resigning from the IRS, he donated his Magsaysay award money as a corpus fund to found an NGO, Public Cause Research Foundation. In 2012, he launched the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and defeated Sheila Dixit in the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly election by a margin of 25,864 votes.[1]

Arvind Kejriwal was sworn in as Chief Minister of Delhi on 28 December 2013.

Early life

Kejriwal was born in the village of Siwani, Haryana, on 16 August 1968 to Gobind Ram Kejriwal and Gita Devi, a well-educated and well-off couple. He has a younger sister and brother. His father was an electrical engineer who graduated from the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, and whose work led to many changes in the family's residence. Kejriwal spent most of his childhood in north Indian towns such as Sonepat, Ghaziabad and Hisar. He was educated at Campus School in Hisar.[2]

Kejriwal studied mechanical engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and then from 1989 he worked for Tata Steel. He left that job in 1992, having previously taken leave of absence in order to study for the Civil Services Examination,[2] and spent some time in Kolkata, at the Ramakrishna Mission in North-East India and at Nehru Yuva Kendra.[3]

Kejriwal joined the Indian Revenue Service in 1995 after qualifying through the Civil Services Examination.[4] In 2000, he was granted two years' paid leave to pursue higher education on condition that upon resuming his work he would not resign from the Service for at least three years. Failure to abide by that condition would require him to repay the salary given during the leave period. He rejoined in 2003 and worked for 18 months before taking unpaid leave for 18 months.[5] In February 2006, he resigned from his position as a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in New Delhi.[4] The Government of India claimed that Kejriwal had violated his original agreement by not working for three years. Kejriwal said that his 18 months of work and 18 months of unpaid absence amounted to the stipulated three year period during which he could not resign and that this was an attempt to malign him due to his involvement with Team Anna, a strand of the Indian anti-corruption movement. Eventually, in 2011, the matter was resolved when he paid his way out of the Service with the help of loans from friends.[5]

Kejriwal is married to Sunita, who is also an IRS officer and his batchmate from National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie and the National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur. The couple have a daughter and a son. Kejriwal is a vegetarian. He has been practicing Vipassana for many years.[2]

Activism

Parivartan

Kejriwal believes "Change begins with small things". In December 1999, while still in service with the Income Tax Department, he helped found a movement named Parivartan (which means "change"), focused on assisting citizens in navigating income tax, electricity and food ration matters in parts of Delhi. The Parivartan organisation exposed a fake ration card scam in 2008[6][7] but, according to a founder member, did not have a great impact generally and was largely moribund by 2012.[8]

Right to Information

Together with Manish Sisodia and Abhinandan Sekhri, Kejriwal established the Public Cause Research Foundation in December 2006, donating the prize money he had received from the Ramon Magsaysay Award as a seed fund.[9] This new body paid the employees of Parivartan.[8]

Kejriwal has used the Right to Information Act in corruption cases in many government departments including the Income Tax Department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Public Distribution System and the Delhi Electricity Board.[3]

Jan Lokpal Bill

Main article: Jan Lokpal Bill

Kejriwal was the civil society representative member of the committee constituted by the Government of India to draft a Jan Lokpal bill, following a campaign for introduction of such legislation that featured Anna Hazare. He had been arrested for his support of Hazare.[10][11]

Political career

Kejriwal established the AAP in November 2012. The party name reflects the phrase Aam Aadmi, or "common man", whose interests Kejriwal proposed to represent.[12]

He became one of the five most mentioned Indian politician on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter in the run-up to the Delhi legislative assembly elections of December 2013[13] Those elections were the first contested by the AAP and in them Kejriwal defeated the incumbent Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, in her Assembly constituency of New Delhi.[14] The party as a whole won 28 of the 70 available Assembly seats.[15]

The AAP then announced its intention to form a minority government in the hung Assembly, with what Dikshit describes as "not unconditional" support from Indian National Congress.[16][17] Kejriwal was sworn in as the second-youngest Chief Minister of Delhi on 28 December 2013, after Chaudhary Brahm Prakash who became chief minister at the age of 34.[18] He is in charge of Home Ministry, Power, Planning, Finance, Vigilance and other non allotted ministries.[19]

Writing

Kejriwal's book, Swaraj, was published in 2012.[20]

[Hand-painted Bollywood Rickshaw Mudflap]

Amitabh Bachchan with Rekha, spotted in Raipur.

The school where Amitabh Bachchan studied :p Oh, the front gate is called the 'Hyderabad Gate'! lol. Apparently there's an old helicopter in the school for educational purposes donated by an ex-Air Force Commander cuz his kid went to this school!

Its more than a life time opportunity to click a legend right in front of you smiling while you are clicking him.

Amitabh Bachchan. Any tips on which films these are most welcome (please indicate left or right)

Unlike the rest of this set, these are not rickshaw mudflaps but rather customised rickshaw interior panels. They were being refitted to a new rickshaw at the hub of rickshaw customisation at Kankaria Lake.

This is my Maruti 800. Often referred to as poor man's car. But this car has been my true companion for most of the bhankanti trips. Its getting old now but the association is still going strong.. I call it Rampyari. Same like Amitabh Bachhan used to call his old car in movie "Akela". :D
