The old chestnut tree that contemplates the passage of time on one side of the road that leads from the mountains to the sea.
The spiders main primary function is to quickly immobilize and subdue its prey and start the digesting process. The venom can contain many different substances which can include amino acids, proteolytic enzymes and neurotoxic polypeptides. This adult female has not quite finished her meal here. Once a spider has caught its prey and will want to eat its food the first step is to literally vomit a digestive fluid all over the food and then to chew the item with the jaws (chelicerae), then on to suck up the fluid back into the mouth together with the liquified meat. Some spiders can produce at least six different kinds of silk and if spiders were scaled to the same size as us it is said that the Web would be strong enough to catch a helicopter. It has also been claimed that a cable of silk as thick as a thumb woven from spider silk would be able to bear the weight of a jumbo jet.
This spider is usually found low down in vegetation in a funnel web often in brambles, gorse and heather, In late summer the female will construct a chamber within the web which is made up of a complex maze of silken tubes that will contain her egg sac and will often be seen guarding the entrance. Unfortunately most of us have been brought up in life from young children to fear a spider and most will feel sorry for the bee straight away but how many feel sorry for the bee in a beak of a stunning looking Bee-Eater Bird or the Stickleback fish repeatably being hit on a branch before being swallowed down whole by a stunning blue King Fisher or even a earth worm that snaps in half when being pulled out of the ground by our friendly Robbin in our gardens. The answer is not many as all three do not have eight legs and look like a spider, its a funny old world that we live in.

Center focus on a Spot Swordtail in a sea of mud=puddling butterflies.
Wikipedia: Graphium nomius, the spot swordtail, is a butterfly found in South and Southeast Asia that belongs to the swallowtail family. The spot swordtail gets its name from the line of distinct white spots along the margin of its wings. It is known from southern and eastern India (including Sikkim and Assam), Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Kampuchea.

Mud-puddling, or simply puddling, is a behavior most conspicuous in butterflies, but occurs in other animals as well, mainly insects; they seek out nutrients in certain moist substances such as rotting plant matter, mud and carrion and they suck up the fluid. Where the conditions are suitable, conspicuous insects such as butterflies commonly form aggregations on wet soil, dung or carrion. From the fluids they obtain salts and amino acids that play various roles in their physiology, ethology and ecology. This behavior also has been seen in some other insects, notably the leafhoppers, e.g. the potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae.

This Yellow Chrysanthemum Plant is a symbol of friendship and cheerfulness!!
`Did you know??~
Chrysanthemum has been consumed in Asia for thousands of years, playing a vital role in Traditional Chinese Medicine and as a delicious and nourishing beverage.
It is believed that it was first cultivated in China in the 15th century BC where it was revered by poets and artists. Chrysanthemums were a symbol of nobility and integrity.
As a herbal tea, it was first brewed and popularized during the Song Dynasty (960 AD - 1279 AD) and for centuries it was used to treat respiratory issues, blood pressure irregularities and to calm the nerves.
Chrysanthemum is packed with vitamins A, B, C and K, beta-carotene, calcium, fiber, iron, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, sodium, zinc, amino acids, and glycosides.
This blend of components makes this beverage not only tasty, but delightfully good for you as well, and you may drink it to reap a number of benefits.

Seaweed ( kelp ) taken during our road trip to Robe, South Australia.
Seaweeds grow in abundance in the oceans, many of which are edible and safe for human consumption.
They have been documented to contain many of the essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds.
For many years, seaweeds have also been cultivated and utilized directly as food for humans or as feed to produce food for human consumption.
Since seaweeds grow in many climatic conditions globally, their cultivation has minimal impact on the environment.
Seaweeds are increasingly recognized as a sustainable food source with the potential to play a major role in providing food security worldwide.
Although seaweeds are part of the diet in many Asian countries and some European nations, there are some challenges in terms of their incorporation into the general diet in many places globally.
Innovation in food technology and culinology can help make seaweeds desirable organoleptically to increase their consumption.
Abstract from a book..Seaweeds: a sustainable food source.
Many thanks for your visit, comments, invites and faves...it is always appreciated..

My energy drink can collection is now up to five and growing. Where this is going nobody knows. I can now say this is part of the energy drink series.
Each can was shot individually with my Nikon 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro with about a 6-10 image focus stack. They do seem to have a lot of potential for art. Five cans, a rectangular to polar coordinate conversion, a wavy window and yummy colors make this slider complete!

Vladimir Tatlin was a Russian artist and architect. After the 1917 Revolution, V.I.Lenin tasked him with replacing Tsarist monuments with ones expressing revolutionary ideals.
Tatlin’s proposed tower was an abstract iron and glass sculpture 400m tall (Eiffel tower is 300m). The tower's axis tilted parallel to that of Earth's.
The monument was to be the headquarters of the Comintern, the international grouping of Communist parties. A lower glass cube housing the Legislature would revolve once a year. Above that was the Executive in a pyramid rotating once a month. Above that, a cylinder would hold press and communications and revolve daily. The entire edifice was to straddle the Neva in Petrograd (St Petersburg).
One prescient feature was the surrounding double helix – Tatlin’s radial struts could almost represent its canonical amino acid bases! Had the existence and structure of DNA – the key to life – been known to Tatlin it would have been of immense symbolic importance.
Tatlin’s constructivist monument in one sense harks back to the 1890s of Eiffel’s France. In another it looks far forward to the twisted and otherwise non-rectilinear steel and glass postures of almost any present-day city finance quarters.
Tatlin’s Tower was never realised although he and students made a 4.2m high mostly wooden model in 1920.
The model pictured here is 1/42 scale and was erected in 2011 at the London Royal Academy. For some reason the lower geometrical solid is a cylinder rather than Tatlin's cube. The model was subsequently moved to the UEA Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, Norfolk.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Molting (loss of skin)
is done, first to get rid of their parasites, ticks that very often implant in their eardrums and front legs, and also to revive their colors, especially in spring when males seek to seduce females, the green lizard changes its habit tarnished by the months of hibernation for smooth and clean scales and a beautiful blue throat (for males), and illuminates its flanks with a magnificent flashy green, (male and female).
These bridal liveries will then lose their shine over the year despite successive moults which are on average three, the moult usually lasts a week.
Here in the photo we can clearly see in the female, the pieces of skin that stand out, they can possibly eat them, to benefit from the amino acids they contain. The male under his possessive gaze and his protective body, does not let go of a crumb.
to look big is better..!
Mud-puddling is a feeding behaviour displayed by butterflies. Although they primarily feed on nectar they seek out other essential nutrients including minerals and amino acids in moist substances such as rotting plant matter and mud. Where the conditions are suitable, butterflies form aggregations while mud-puddling.
There are six species of butterflies in this photo taken at Phnom Kulen National Park, Cambodia. I have identified two species. The large butterflies are yellow helens, Papilio nephelus. The white butterfly in flight is the same as the yellow and white butterflies with a dark edge at the edge of their wings. They are chocolate albatrosses, Appias lyncida.

A turkey dinner on Christmas Day always makes me drowsy. Apparently, it contains L-tryptophan, an amino acid that's often linked with sleep. It encourages serotonin production in your brain, and this makes you feel relaxed and sleepy. We did manage a walk before diving into the seconds again on Boxing Day, and did so in an unusually green landscape. It was still cold enough for puddles to freeze, though, and it was a maple leaf with the patterned ice that caught the attention of my fuzzy brain here.

Julia Heliconian (Dryas iulia)
This graceful orange southern beauty has long narrow wings outlined in a thin black line. While females usually have more black on their wings, the males are often a brighter orange. The Julia is a swift flier that enjoys tropical woodlands. The female can be observed laying her eggs in a shady location on Passiflora vines. An interesting trait common to the longwinged butterflies is their specialized proboscis that allows them to feed on pollen. They are able to get amino acids from the pollen that they cannot get from nectar. This unique diet allows them to live longer than many other butterflies. Enjoy the arrival of this beautiful creature to your garden; they may be there a while!
Family: Brush-footed Butterfly (Nymphalidae)
Subfamily: Longwing (Heliconiinae)

For those who have been wondering what has happened to Linus, as he almost doesn't appear on my photostream anymore, here he is. Linus isn't fond of the camera right now to say the least. For unknown reasons he seems to have some anxiety issues at the moment which was one of the reasons why I took him to the vet earlier this week. The main reason was that he doesn't eat well which may have to do with his anxiety issues. He now gets medication, a combination of amino acids, and we will have to see if his behaviour and appetite change in the next 10 days. If not, another trip to the vet will be necessary. For now he seems to be slightly calmer but he is still over sensitive to noises.

Linus found a begonia flower on the terrace and this time he really had nothing to do with the damage, it was all the human's fault. As he is a flower lover, he was pleased with his find, though.
Linus is generally much calmer than a few days ago, still a bit careful and sensitive to noise but we haven't had any panic attacks in the last two days. Seems that the amino acids really help. He will get his daily capsule for the rest of the week and next week I will have to discuss with the vet whether I should continue with the medication for a while or not.

A bee joins a Zebra Butterfly feasting on a Passion Fruit flower.
From Bug of the Week -
I had the opportunity to enjoy the antics of the remarkable zebra longwing, Heliconius charitonius, as it visited flowering trees and shrubs along a trail through a swampy forest. Tropical butterflies in the genus Heliconius, such as the zebra, are notable for their longevity. These beauties live up to six months. Zebras and their kin evolved an interesting strategy to gather nutritious pollen used to sustain their long lives. The zebra flies a well-defined route through the forest visiting flowers that present a fresh batch of pollen and nectar each day. This behavior is called traplining and is employed by many tropical pollinators including bees, hummingbirds, and bats.
After collecting a gob of pollen on its long, straw-like proboscis, the butterfly secretes specialized enzymes to release the amino acids and other nutrients in the pollen. The nutrients are absorbed through the membranes lining the proboscis and used to produce eggs and maintain the zebra’s high level of activity zooming about the forest. In addition to visiting flowers laden with pollen, the zebra also searches for different species of plants in the passion vine genus, Passiflora.
These tropical vines bear the magnificent passion flower and following pollination, the passion fruit. Several species of passion vine are used by the immature stages of the zebra and other Heliconius butterflies as a source of food. These voracious caterpillars consume great quantities of leafy tissue on a daily basis. As a group, passion fruit plants are protected from most leaf-munching caterpillars and other vegan insects by a veritable witch’s brew of highly toxic chemicals including alkaloids, a family of toxins that include strychnine and nicotine, and cyanogenic glycosides, chemicals that release cyanide upon entering the body. However, using some clever metabolic machinery, the specialized Heliconius butterflies have turned the tables on passion fruit plants and now feast on their leaves with impunity. With so much munching by the larvae of the zebras and their kin, one wonders how the vines of Passiflora survive.
From the butterfly breeder/photographer - the passion fruit vines act as a 'host' for the zebra butterflies. I have many of those as well as Firebush which the butterfly enjoys. Adult zebra longwing butterflies feed on both flower nectar and pollen. The additional nutrients from the pollen enable individuals to survive for several months, far exceeding the normal two to four week adult life span of most other butterflies. Adult individuals often form small communal roosts at night. Sometimes they swarm around me - the first time they did that I was shocked.
Yes I was out in a preserve looking for a zebra on a passionflower when I took this photo - the bee was an 'extra'.
BTW - since this was photographed with an R7 - this telephoto shot (hand-held) was at over 500mm.
From the Florida Times Union :
...you’ve probably seen the flight of the distinctive black butterfly with bold yellow stripes, the zebra longwing butterfly (Heliconius charithonis). Since 1996, it has been the Florida state butterfly. What you discovered is the mature larvae feeding on its host plant, one of many species of passionflower.
You really can’t confuse it with any other Florida butterfly. This impressive 2 1/2- to 4-inch flyer with its striking pattern prefers warm, damp, tropical hammocks and thickets. Just the conditions most of the state provides, especially central and south Florida.
False Zebra Longwing or Atthis Longwing (Heliconius atthis) is a species of Heliconius butterfly. It is endemic to Ecuador. It is a mimic of the Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charithonia).
Heliconius butterflies have two unique traits: pollen feeding and pupal-mating. Adult butterflies systematically collect pollen from flowers which they masticate on the proboscis to dissolve amino acids. Since they do not need to store nutrients for egg and sperm production, caterpillars are able to develop rapidly allowing adults to have a greatly extended lifespan in the wild.

Physalis is characterised by the small orange fruit similar in size, shape and structure to a small tomato, but partly or fully enclosed in a large papery husk derived from the calyx. The berry also goes by the names Golden Strawberry,Chinese Lantern and Cape gooseberry.
Not all Physalis species bear edible fruit. Select species are cultivated for their edible fruit, however; the typical Physalis fruit is similar to a firm tomato in texture, and like strawberries or pineapple in flavour, with a mild acidity.
Physalis fruit is a good source of vitamin C, beta-carotene, iron, calcium and trace amounts of B vitamins. These fruits contain 18 kinds of amino acids .
These berries are also abundant in polysaccharides, compounds that may help fortify the immune system.

The title here is a steal from the original Spider-man series theme song. A comma can make such a big difference in meaning.
The hungry babies don't care if they get fed worms, grasshoppers, caterpillars, or spiders. They just want FOOD!
However, they should care. Spiders are a great source of amino acids, and specifically taurine. That compound is particularly beneficial for brain development in young birds. Bring on the spiders, man!
Hanging on with its curling black proboscis or sipping straw inserted in this unusually long throated flower.
The Heliconius butterfly can live up to 9 months while neotropical butterflies normally live a couple weeks! Heliconius butterflies have two unique traits:
1- Pollen feeding. Adult butterflies systematically collect pollen from flowers which they masticate on the proboscis to dissolve out amino acids. Since they do not need to store nutrients for egg and sperm production, caterpillars are able to develop rapidly allowing adults to have a greatly extended lifespan in the wild.
2- Pupal mating is a second unusual trait found in some Heliconius species. Males search for female pupae on larval food plants and sit on them. The next morning mating occurs before the female has completely emerged. Pupal-mating may enhance the possibility of intrageneric mimicry. Second, it may influence host-plant specialization, as pupal-mating species may displace other heliconiines from their hosts by interference competition.

Spiders have special glands that secrete silk proteins (made up of chains of amino acids), which are dissolved in a water-based solution. The spider pushes the liquid solution through long ducts, leading to microscopic spigots on the spider's spinnerets.
Looks like it is puddling. From Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens "Puddling, sometimes referred to as “mud-puddling,” is a behavior observed primarily in male butterflies. It involves these winged wonders congregating around puddles, damp soil, or even animal droppings. The butterflies use their proboscis, a long, straw-like mouthpart, to absorb essential nutrients from the substrate. These nutrients often include salts, amino acids, and minerals like sodium, which are crucial for various biological processes."
For example, my blood pressure had been too high for months...
I should have been taking an ACE inhibitor, which my body fought back against massively.
With the last oral cortisone treatment (my back, my intervertebral discs, the new prolapse ), it was finally, and I mean finally, time not only to drastically change my nourishment, but also to go deep into substitution.
Result: My blood pressure normalised within a very short time, with L-arginine ( a very effective amino acid ) and potassium, no medication.
Now I am testing specifically.
Because a body can only help and heal itself if it has all the elements at its disposal. Especially the amino acids.
That's why I did the test, a little finger blood and... I'm curious...
My intervertebral discs won't get new from it, but it's a start.
The next test will be a test of minerals... 😉

Commonly known as the “Postman”, this attractive member of the Heliconiinae family is common in suitable habitat and can sometimes be found in large numbers feeding at forest flowers. They are identified by their black wings which are crossed by a broad red band and by the four red spots at the base of their wings on the underside. They are weak fliers and avoid windy areas, preferring to keep to the undergrowth and forest edge. Members of the Heliconiinae family are some of the only species of butterflies known to ‘eat’ pollen. Intentional or not, this behavior provides the butterfly with amino acids that may extend their lifespan.

... fresh Physalis in their husks. Both to eat and to photograph!
These fruits contain 18 kinds of amino acids.
These berries are also abundant in polysaccharides, compounds that may help fortify the immune system.
Thank you for your time and comments, greatly appreciated, M, (*_*)
