Common Names: Amethyst, Amethyst Plant

Family: Lamiaceae

Category: Flowers, Perennial Flowers

Climate: Mediterranean, Subtropical, Tropical

Origin: Africa, South Africa

Height: 40 to 60 centimeters

Brightness: Filtered Light, Half Shadow

In the garden, the amethyst offers beautiful massifs and borders in partial shade, or protected under the canopy of trees and other structures.

Terminal inflorescences on erect branches about 15 cm long, with lilac flowers with an extended tube and purple spots at the opening, there is also the variety with white flowers.

They appear from November to May, and can be grown in pots and planters adorning balconies and patios, or even well-lit positions indoors.

Double exposure with a shadow of another plant.

Amethyst

Brazil

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz (SiO2) and owes its violet color to irradiation, impurities of iron and in some cases other transition metals, and the presence of other trace elements, which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions.

Male - The amethyst woodstar (Calliphlox amethystina) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is found in most of central, and eastern South America proper, in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname-(the Guianas), Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela. The bird's range surrounds the Amazon countries into the Andes foothills and higher elevations of upstream river systems, but is not along the Amazon River proper in the central Amazon Basin, or the central upper Basin; it is in Brazil at the river's outlet, and upstream for about 500 km. At 7.5 cm (3 in) and under 3 grams in weight, this is one of the smallest birds in existence. It has a generalist diet of nearby flower nectar and insects in flight. This species is generally poorly understood due to its rarity. Said rarity has also made it difficult to set a concrete conservation status (some even considering it as critical). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amethyst_woodstar

Wondering about the weekend!

The most widely distributed of its genus, the Amethyst Woodstar is found in a great variety of habitats throughout its circum-Amazonian distribution. The male is mainly bronzy green above with a prominently forked tail, white sides to the rump, and a striking amethyst-colored throat, bordered by a white breast band. The female has a green-spotted white throat, orange-rufous sides to the underparts, and a narrow white line behind the eye. The Amethyst Woodstar has been recorded taking the nectar of a large number of plant species, and at least occasionally the species hawks insects in flight. This woodstar is probably largely sedentary, but local movements potentially occur, though have yet to be proven. The species is usually not uncommon, but is rather rare and has perhaps declined in northeast Argentina, and is very poorly known in Colombia.

Have a Peaceful weekend!

Have a nice weekend!:-)

A vintage amethyst and gold necklace, originally owned by my Nana. I've had it for about fifty years and she had it for many years before giving it to me. It's a bit worn and could do with a good clean. It's displayed here on a piece of amethyst crystal which was sent to me by a very kind Flickr friend, all the way from Canada.

The image measures just under 2" in width.
