Distinguished Alumni Award Presented by Bill Ripp

Gary W. Clem, AHS Class of 1961, is currently Chairman of ALMACO in Nevada, Iowa. Gary’s formal education in Ames included Crawford and Roosevelt Elementary Schools as well as Central Junior H.S. and Ames Sr. H.S. In high school Gary worked for Allan Machine & Supply Company doing a variety of odd jobs. Following an excursion to California after graduation, he returned to the Midwest and enrolled in an Apprenticeship Tool and Die Maker program in Omaha, NE. Upon his graduation in 1966, Gary was drafted by the Army and stationed in Germany during the Viet Nam Conflict. Following his military discharge, from 1968-1971 Gary was the Product Manger of the Aluminum Container Division for Revere Copper and Brass in Louisville. Kentucky. In 1972, Gary returned to Ames to become the general manager of Allan Machine & Supply Company, which at that time employed 8 people and provided all types of welding, repair and machining services. In the mid-70s Iowa State University and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture approached the business about producing a specialized self-propelled, self-cleaning plot harvester to use in the seed research programs. After building several unsuccessful prototypes, the first Clark-Fehr SPC20 combine was manufactured in 1976, casting the mold for the future of seed research equipment.

In 1978 Gary purchased the manufacturing and machine segments of Allan Machine and Supply Company, along with the research equipment brand name ALMACO. He continued to expand the research equipment product line to include planters, threshers, combines and their electronic data collection and control systems. In 1982, business growth prompted Gary to move ALMACO, along with about 50 employees, to its current location in Nevada, Iowa. Demand for the seed research equipment continued to grow, so in the mid-80's ALMACO shut down its welding and repair services in order to focus entirely on manufacturing seed research technology. Today ALMACO’s state-of-the-art design and manufacturing facility occupies 120,000 sq. ft. on a 75 acre campus, at times employing over 200 individuals. ALMACO has developed and patented numerous models of specialized agricultural research combines, planters and electronic equipment for planting and harvesting research tests for the improvement of corn, soybeans, wheat, rice and other seeds. ALMACO has placed equipment worldwide, and recently they opened a satellite facility in Brazil to accommodate the growth of agricultural research in South America. The ALMACO products that have been developed over the years have helped automate the seed research industry and have contributed significantly to increasing the world food production.

Gary is also very generous with his time and talent. While living in the Nevada, Iowa community, he has served in the following capacities: 10 years on the Nevada City Council, President of the Nevada Rotary Club and inducted into the Nevada Rotary Hall of Fame, President of the Nevada Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Nevada Economic Development, Mainstream Living Board of Directors, Citizens for Criminal Justice (CCJ) Board member and member of the Cornerstone Church in Ames. Other Businesses include: GWC Real Estate, Ames Executive Rentals, and Iowa Boys Real Estate. He enjoys motor homing, collecting classic cars and vintage Harley Davidson’s, fishing and motorcycling throughout the USA. This year marks 24 years of marriage to his wife, Sue, and they are enjoying the blended family of six children and twelve grandchildren. They currently spend six months in Nevada and six months in Gold Canyon, Arizona. It is with great pleasure that we present our 2016 AHSAA Distinguished Alumnus Award to Gary W. Clem, AHS Class of 1961.

NATHAN TERRY, CLASS OF 1996

A standout swimmer on Coach Mike Wittmer's teams that went undefeated in dual, conference, and district meets for four consecutive seasons Nathan Terry AHS 1996 can claim a role as a member of two state championship relay teams and all-state and All-American selections in addition to four letters in swimming, Terry also lettered twice in football and played an integral role on Coach Kirk Daddow's successful 1995 team which finished the season with a 9-3 record

Terry started his varsity-swimming career as a freshman in 1993, a season in which the Ames swimmers went undefeated during the regular season and finished fourth in the state meet. The 1994 team repeated the ‘93 team's win record and wound up fifth in state meet competition, 1995 saw Ames once again going into the state meet undefeated only to come up just short of a state championship with a runner-up finish. In '95 state competition Terry swam a 48.36 split on a 400-yard freestyle relay team that won in 3:12:54 to gain a state championship and also swam on the second place 200 freestyle relay team.

The 1996 season was a repeat of the previous three. Undefeated during the season the Little Cyclones finished fourth in the state meet, Terry and his teammates again won the 400 freestyle relay and placed second in the 200-yard medley relay and once again received All American status Terry graduated holding four school records and five district and five conference championships, he was also honored on the IHSSCA all-state team in 1995 and 1996 and received the IHSAA Excellence in Academics Achievement Award for three years.

Lettering in football in 1994, Terry moved to the starting fullback position midway through the ‘95 season against Urbandale where he rushed 13 times for 71 yards in the win. He went on to record 62 yards in 14 carries in a 12-0 win over Valley and rushed for 89 yards in 10 attempts in a close loss to Marshalltown, Against Fort Dodge (22-6 Ames win) Terry lugged the ball seven times for 77 yards in the post-season playoffs he carried 12 times for 76 yards in the little Cyclone win over Sioux City East, and ended his prep football days with 19 yards nine carries) in the semi-finals loss to Dowling 35-34 at the UN Dome. For the season Terry gained 485 yards on 9O carries, second on the team in rushing yardage,

Following high school graduation Terry became a member of the lowa State swim team in the fall of 1996 he graduated from ISU in 2000 with a degree in sports management. He has been employed since graduation as associate director of marketing in the ISU athletic department. Married to Julie Ollila ‘97, a 2010 Ames High School Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, they are the parents of four children. Justin (12), Dylan (10), Brandon (8) and Kaitlyn (6)

Terry relates. Throughout my four years of competing, was lucky to have many great coaches who made an impact on my high school athletic career and my development as an adult. My only regret was that we were unable to win a state championship for Coach (Wittmer)."

August 28, 1932 - September 8, 2020

John Sletten, age 88, of Ames, Iowa passed away peacefully at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on September 8, 2020. A celebration of life memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., September 15, 2020 at Ames High School Stadium on the 50-yard line. Face coverings will be required with social distancing encouraged. The family encourages you to park in the new parking spaces east of the stadium.

John was born August 28, 1932 in Northfield MN, the son of Oliver and Clara Sletten. He graduated from Northfield High School in 1950 where he was active in band, choir, track, football, basketball, and was editor of the school paper. After high school, John continued his education and participation in athletics at Saint Olaf College, where he was a three-year letter winner in track, graduating in 1954. He also later earned a master's degree from University of Minnesota in administration. John served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany for 18 months. He returned to Faribault, MN where he taught junior high school English. While teaching in Faribault, John met and later married Elizabeth Head on June 21, 1958. The couple made their home in Northfield where they had their three children, Anne, Margit and Lise. In Northfield, John taught high school English and was head track and cross-country coach. In 1969, John moved his young family to Ames where he continued to teach high school English and coach track and cross-country until retirement. John's coaching resume includes 9 state track championships and 4 state cross country championships. John was president of Iowa Track Coaches Association, was elected into the Hall of Fame in Northfield and in Ames and was named National Coach of the Year in 1990.

While coaching track was a lifelong passion, John also enjoyed time with his family, Bethesda Lutheran Church activities and friends, travelling, studying history, daily coffee with his Hy-Vee buddies, attending Iowa State sporting events and his daily 2-mile walks.

John is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sletten of Ames; daughters, Anne Sletten of Johnston, Margit (Doug) Ross of Johnston, and Lise Rollins of Ames; grandchildren, Jennifer Ross of Minneapolis, MN, Brian Ross of Bozeman, MT, Sarah Ross of Chicago, IL, and Hannah and Halley Rollins of Ames; sister, Janet Wilson of Eagan, MN and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Don Rollins.

John will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
