The American Spirit departs Duluth with a load of UTAC Mustang flux pellets for Indiana Harbor. A perfect night to be at the canal with a warm breeze from the southwest and a large crowd gathered to watch the footer glide out into Lake Superior.

The thousand-footer American Spirit arrives in Duluth on Saturday for winter lay-up at the Port Terminal.

With lakers getting ready to head out in a few weeks I wanted to get a shot or two with them as a backdrop. Here UP's twice-weekly transfer to Duluth rolls past the Philip R. Clarke and American Spirit.

The cruise ship, American Spirit is temporarily docked at John Pope Marine Park in Port Townsend, Washington. This park is dedicated to John B. Pope, retired City Parks Department supervisor. The dock features a floating dock for temporary moorage.

The American Spirit and Philip R. Clarke rest at the Port Terminal awaiting the start of the shipping season in late March. I'm guessing there is a bubbler system around the stern of the Clarke to keep ice away, otherwise it would be frozen solid here.

Forest and Lake in Oregon

The American Spirit is downbound at the Ambassador Bridge for Zug Island.

The American Spirit makes it's way under the aerial lift bridge in Duluth on it's arrival on Saturday evening, it's departure the next day did not go so smoothly as it appears to have been pushed off course due to strong currents at the canal and was grounded to the North of the canal.

American Steamship's St. Clair exits the Poe Lock at Sault Ste. Marie while in the distance ASC American Spirit waits for our footer Indiana Harbor to lock through. The smaller MacArthur Lock on the left was undergoing inspection and isn't expected to be back in service until August 19, causing numerous delays.

Downbound off a hazy Lake St. Clair, the American Spirit begins the trip down the Detroit River to Zug Island.

The American Century (left) and American Spirit are tied up in Duluth for the winter. The tug Helen H breaks ice to make room for the Philip R. Clarke to join the den. The BNSF ore cars in the foreground are stored as well, but hopefully will return to service this March when Keewatin Taconite restarts production.
