I scored three old Kindles at the Goodwill Outlet the other day. Two of them seemed to be broken, in different ways. Popped off the backs, swapped their batteries, now I've got one working Kindle and one double-broken Kindle. Hurray!

Fixing things like this makes me feel good about myself. I also got a broken Nikon N60 the same day at the Goodwill and I repaired that too (its aperture nubbin was bent; I bent it back into place)

I may have said once or twice already that I'm in love with my new Kindle, but really I am. I've owned an ereader for a couple of years now (a Sony one), but I've never been able to integrate it into my reading routine as easily or as invisibly as I have with the Kindle. Take yesterday for instance, I returned to my ongoing Maupassant Monday series, and it was the first time that I'd loaded Maupassant stories on to the Kindle since getting it. I'm chuffed to bits with the Kindle I really am, but it doesn't mean that I'm anywhere close to rating ereaders over traditional books. See here in today's bookshot for example, here's my Kindle huddled with two short story collections I'm about to start working my way through - Clemens Meyer's All the Lights (forethoughts) and The Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology 4 (forethoughts) - and they all are sitting in the sun together, getting along swimmingly.

Yep, in my mind ereaders and traditional books are the perfect partners, but what do you think? I wiggled the plastic clip and removed it (much too easy to do). Then I used a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol -- on a folder paper towel -- to clean the surfaces of the Kindle (and also the suede cover) where the Velcro would go. I allowed the suede to dry completely. I cut out the Velcro pieces (be sure to use "Industrial Strength" Velcro) and placed the soft (loop) pieces on the back of the Kindle.

Hover your mouse over this photo to see the numbers I have assigned to the three Velcro locations (as well as comments about each location). I will refer to these numbers in other photos.

Note that I did not want to place any Velcro on the dark-colored battery cover. Since the cover is designed to slide off, I didn't want to use it in my attempt to secure the Kindle.
