Prior to making their procession to the temple, the devotees purify themselves with yellow dye and the water of the nearby river. Afterwards they are dressed and their bodies prepared for the kavadi.
As Thaipusam festival gets underway, devotees flood into the preparation site to have their bodies marked with holy ash to invoke the support of the Hindu gods. Energy is high and queues can be lengthly but in each line of people are individuals taking moments to reflect upon the elements of life that bring our communities together.

Some things are better witnessed with our eyes and not through the lens of our camera. I caught this bystander doing just that. He was so engrossed by the man having his face pierced that his camera fell from his eyes.
