Loveland, Colorado to Colorado Springs
Normal route = 2.5 hours;
Adventure route = 7 hours ... including the time getting stuck in the snowbank and enlisting 5 strangers to the rescue ;)
I make this image public for getting an impression of the AVIF format (can be opened in the latest IrfanView, Chrome and Firefox): Link to AVIF in Google Drive
The AVIF image compression (in the HEIF container) is a very promising format as it provides good image quality in a very small package and is (in comparison to HEIC) free of any licenses. I hope Flickr as well as Google and Microsoft products will soon have full support for this innovation.
Besides the high compression efficiency the big advantage over JPEG is that a color depth per channel of 10 and even 12 bit is supported.
This sample is generated using the avifenc.exe command line encoder for windows.
I used this parameters:
avifenc.exe --cicp 2/2/1 -r limited -y 420 -j 6 --min 30 --max 40 --minalpha 30 --maxalpha 40 in.png out.avif
The result is:
- 6 threads used (for my 6 CPU cores)
- to colorspace YUV420 (422 and 444 is not supported by the Windows AV1 extension)
- 12 bit per channel
700KB for 35MP
We went with purpose this night to find the Northern Lights. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, we spent our time under an open sky, on the beach, and in a place we thought would be somewhat absent of light. "You never know till you go", I always say, so Sargeant Bay became our quarry.
Like many that evening, we too were left disappointed considering our thirst for nature's display was a no-show. In its place this attempt at an evening shot served as hope. It was dark enough that I could barely see the clouds, but just light enough to know the direction. Either way, this is what turned out.
Nature is amazing, even in disappointment.
Oak leaves on a suspended journey through the ice.
We could all do with something warm and stimulating.

I hadn't been around this side of the rocks at Torquay and quite like the change of perspective. My apologies for being rushed and not taking the time to clean my lens!
The world is indeed small as I met another local photographer Jenni (check out her awesome Flickr feed) without quite realising the connection at the time.
Is this what an alternate universe might look like? Who knows.
at least it's new to me. That means: using this technique with water and oil. I had a lot of fun with it. Thanks for introducing this nice theme. HMM.
Another image from the morning of May 15th in Custer State Park. I'm alternating between fur and feathers for this series.
Calving had occurred for the bison herd in Custer, and the cows had decided to show off their babies by hanging out near the road. There were well over 100 cows and at least 60 calves very close to the wildlife loop road.
This is a view of the Colorado River (upper left) from the area near Horseshoe Bend, Page, Arizona.
The river makes its famous bend around the peninsula at top center of image. If one looks closely at the extreme top left an outhouse is visible at the river's edge. The standard viewpoint of the river is from upper left (out of frame).
We made a day hike to get to this viewpoint for something to do and to get a different perspective on the river. We wandered over 8 miles round trip on our jaunt. Very beautiful area.

I must have stood under this tree for about 15 minutes just enjoying the light. I have no idea what kind of tree it was.
Taken at Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa.
This is the alternate version with a wider aspect showing the sun, as I could not decide which I liked better!
