A big male Alpine Ibex rests alone. Big old males are known to live alone or in small groups of other males.
At high altitudes this dark beauty is known as the Mountain Dark-veined White. This strikingly looking female butterfly with dark wings and barely seen dark sports was a real treat posing for quite some time. Whether this is a separate species (Pieris bryoniae) or subspicies of more familiar Green-veined White (Pieris napi ssp. bryoniae) is still debatable. Taken at about 1750 m on the alpine nature trail near the Gjaid Alm on Dachstein mountain plateau, Styria, Austria.

Mistaken for a curled up black snake, this alpine salamander appeared much less dangerous and actually super cute.

Legend had it that the ibex's spine was rigid, so the goat could not look back. If threatened from behind, it would jump off a cliff and safely land on its horns.
The Steinbock or Alpine Ibex is a type of wild mountain goat with large recurved horns that are transversely ridged in front. They tend to occupy steep, rough terrain at elevations of 2-5 km.
