Hermeto Pascoal – Slaves Mass (Japanese Release with Obi and Insert)
Original Release: 1977 (Brazil) / Japanese Pressing: 1979
Personal Note: Written in memory of Hermeto Pascoal (1936–2025)
There are albums, and then there are moments in sound where the laws of physics, sanity, and music seem to break down—joyfully. Slaves Mass, Hermeto Pascoal’s 1977 masterpiece (issued in Japan in 1979 with that coveted obi strip and a full Japanese-language insert), is such a moment.
The Japanese pressing is pristine—rich sound, warm vinyl, packaged with deep reverence. The obi strip hugs the jacket like a quiet bow of respect, framing the kaleidoscopic art that hints at the madness inside. Inside the insert: kanji notes trying to explain the unexplainable—how a Brazilian wizard could turn whistling, oinking, chanting, and fretless keyboards into something so divine.
In Slaves Mass, Hermeto didn’t just make music—he summoned spirits. 'Mixing Pot', 'Cannon', 'Little Cry for Him', and of course the haunting title track are each portals to another realm. There's a goat in there somewhere, and probably a duck, a child, a wind god, and at least one alien. But none of them play like Hermeto. No one plays like Hermeto.
When I was ten in 1979, the Japanese release entered the world. I didn’t know it yet, but it was calling out to me—calling out across decades. And now, at 56, I finally stood in front of the man himself with my nephew in Amsterdam on September 14, 2025. It was a cosmic night. The kind of night you don’t come down from easily.
And then, he was gone. Hermeto left this planet not long after that show. But I believe he only returned to where he always came from.
This album was never just a record. It was, and is, the sound of Hermeto being more goat than goat, more human than most, and more cosmic than all of us.
Obrigado, Hermeto. Vá com tudo. Você sempre foi demais.
