The lower regions and larger towns of the Alps are well served by motorways and main roads, but higher passes and by-roads can be treacherous even in summer. Many passes are closed in winter. A multitude of airports around the Alps (and some within), as well as long-distance rail links from all neighbouring countries, afford large numbers of travellers easy access from abroad. The Alps typically see more than 50 million visitors a year.
During the summer months three Alpine herdsmen - actually two of them are women - and their animals (1 dog, about 50 cows, some pigs and chickens) are living on this alp.
They are making alp cheese, fresh cheese, butter, buttermilk and yoghurt. They sell their tempting products to the hikers, but you better think twice. After all you have to carry the stuff down to the valley all by yourself.

A cheeky snap of Basingstokes brand new ALP. It looks like it's just been delivered as they were carrying out checks on the boom at the time and the old ALP was still in it's bay. A bloody gorgeous looking piece of kit I must say! The chassis is the same as the ALP at Southsea however new emergency lighting has been installed; looks like the same LED bars as on the Schools Education Vehicle (unusually looks like they've left out amber LEDs on these). It also has some sort of writing on the front above the windscreen, much like the 'CAFS' on Rescue Pumps, however I could not read this but it could say 'Basingstoke'?
Apologies for the pretty poor shot but at least it's a picture!
