Yesterday, I had some fun with one of my manual vintage lenses

 

... taken in a grove (part of a local recreation near a creek) on an evening stroll. And yes, it was a peaceful atmosphere, indeed : )

A delicacy of Old Delhi is a dish called Poori Aloo (fried wheat bread with spicy potato curry). A comfort food for most, can be found in many small shacks dishing them out to eager customers. These competitor are among those unknown shops who are not exactly famous but still the stuff they make can make any heart melt (with spices and heat).

Nicely puffed up Luchi's (puri's) fresh off the stove. YUM!

Divine fish appears with message for mankind

Chennai, India In what is believed to be his tenth incarnation, Lord Vishnu “the Preserver” appeared to 87 year old Sag Aloo, a fisherman from the state of Tamil Nadu in India, as a 0.73 kg (1.6 pound) red snapper.

 

Sag had just pulled in his nets after a long day without a single catch, and was despondently rowing back to shore, when he heard a loud thud behind him. “When I turned around, I saw that a fish had leapt into the boat. He was a good size and very meaty - definitely a fryer.”

 

It was then that the fish spoke, announcing that he was the Lord Vishnu, and had an important message for mankind. At first, Sag was skeptical, “After all, it is not every day that you meet the Lord Vishnu – Ganesha or Hanuman, sure thing, but Lord Vishnu? It all seemed very fishy to me.”

 

A discussion ensued, and eventually Sag was convinced. “He just knew too many things that only Vishnu would know.”

 

Sag, who had received a cell phone for his last birthday, immediately called his family on shore so they could prepare for Vishnu’s arrival. “My wife is very, very devout, and was tremendously excited – and my grandson, who has been wanting a pet, asked if we could keep him.” Looking to the horizon, and choked with emotion, Sag added, “Everyone was so very happy.”

 

When his call ended, Sag turned back to find that Lord Vishnu, who had been making an “annoying throat clearing noise” just a few moments before, was dead. Sag was despondent – and then a miracle happened. The image of Buddha appeared in the dead fish’s eye.

 

“There is no question the fish was Lord Vishnu,” says Professor Nehru of Chennai Community College. “The image was very clear, and any semi-literate person would have immediately realized that there was nothing unusual about Vishnu coming to Earth as a fish. In his first incarnation, Lord Vishnu was the fish Matsya, and warned of an impending flood. Unfortunately, the message he wished to share this time will forever remain a mystery.”

 

Thanks to the miracle image, Lord Vishnu brought a very good price at the Kottivakkam market, and was, according to the purchaser (who asked to remain anonymous), “a bit tough, but really quite tasty.”

Victor, Marnie and I got potato tikki and cauliflower pakoras (incredibly delicious and cheap) from New Bhaia Sweet Shop on Fraser & 41st, then took them to nearby Mountain View Cemetery to eat. I didn't notice the angry expression until I downloaded my pics!!

I'm busily making dishes for tomorrow's feast. It's my friend John's birthday, and will be the first time we've had people over for dinner since his birthday last year!

Aloo Bonda is a delicious gram flour fritter stuffed with spicy Aloo masala. It is popular all over India. In Maharashtra it is called Batata Vada. It is spicy and full of flavour.

Aloo tikki - Indische Kartoffelpuffer

(Modifiziert nach dem Rezept aus dem Kochbuch "Immer schon vegan" von Katharina Seiser, S. 125)

 

1000 g mehlige Kartoffeln - in der Schale garen, ausdampfen lassen, schälen und zerstampfen.

 

150 g TK-Erbsen - 2-3 Minuten in heißem Wasser garen (oder im Dämpfeinsatz über den Kartoffeln)

 

1/2 Bund Koriandergrün (hier Petersilie !) - klein geschnitten

 

1 EL Kreuzkümmel, ganz

1 EL Koriandersamen, ganz - beides ein einer Pfanne anrösten

3 EL Kichererbsenmehl - ebenfalls in der Pfanne anrösten

ca. 1,5 EL Ingwer, gerieben

2 TL Garam Masala

1 EL (?) Salz

Chilipulver nach Geschmack

1 - 2 EL Zitronensaft

 

Alles „gründlich aber vorsichtig“ miteinander vermengen.

 

Mandarinengroße Teigstücke zu Bällchen formen und leicht flach drücken.

 

Neutrales Pflanzenöl bodenbedeckend in einer Pfanne erhitzen und die Puffer bei mittlerer Hitze knusprig braten. (ca. 5 Min. pro Seite). Auf Küchenkrepp abtropfen lassen.

 

Heiß essen und mit Churneys servieren; oder Salat dazu.

mir haben sie lauwarm und kalt auch geschmeckt.

Aloo Baba (Aloo : Pomme de terre ; Baba : Sage)

A Pushkar, on me conseille d'aller voir ce sage qui habite un petit temple à l'extérieur de la ville. "Aloo Baba is full power, no bullshit!". Sa célébrité vient de sa sagesse, qui lui est venue progressivement depuis qu'il se nourrit uniquement de pommes de terres. Pourquoi les pommes de terres? A cette question, il répond que dans la vie, chaque choix est un problème et l'empêchait de méditer correctement. Il y a 45 ans, il a décidé de ne plus avoir à choisir quoi que ce soit, et en conséquence, s'est mis à se nourrir exclusivement de pommes de terre.

I added chickpeas, as suggested, to make this dish into a meal. Easy to make and great flavour.

 

I cook just about all one-pot dishes in a tagine. Works really well. The good-looking tagine can be put on the table and everybody can serve themselves :)

   

If you knew me a few years before you would hardly believe that person like me can have passion for cooking. You would even claim with confidence that such thing is completely impossible. It is truly beyond the question that all the things in the world are relative! :) I am in love with cooking now! Can't help it! Aloo tikki is a indian subcontinent snack made of boiled potatoes, onions and various spices. "Aloo" means potato, and the word "tikki" means a small cutlet or croquette. It is found in almost every chaat shop or stall in Delhi as well as in other parts of India. It is served hot along with saunth, tamarind and coriander-mint sauce, and sometimes yogurt or chick peas.

I didn't have fresh coriander so had to use some coriander I had stored in the freezer. Of course, fresh would look and taste better :)
