View at the Alcea rosea or Hollyhock during sunset. This year, due to the warm weather conditions in september, we can spend more time outdoor, which is nice but a bit scary at the same time. Are these the signs that the climate is changing.......?

Another. This one spotted in the Kleingartenverein Friedenau allotment gardens.

Alcea rosea, the common hollyhock, is an ornamental dicot flowering plant in the family Malvaceae. It was imported into Europe from southwestern China during, or possibly before, the 15th century.[2] William Turner, a herbalist of the time, gave it the name "holyoke" from which the English name derives.

Alcea is a genus of about 60 species of flowering plants in the mallow family Malvaceae, commonly known as the hollyhocks. They are native to Asia and Europe. The single species of hollyhock from the Americas, the streambank wild hollyhock, belongs to a different genus.

The Hollyhock

If the hollyhock is sown in the spring, the plant will only form leaves that year and will not flower until the following year. If the hollyhock is sown at the end of summer (August/September), the plant can flower the following year, but that depends on the weather, it can also take a year longer. After flowering, the hollyhock forms new offshoots next to the old rosette. The old stem must be cut off, otherwise it will cost the plant too much energy.

In the Belvedere gardens

The single or double, cup-shaped flowers have little or no stalk and bloom on tall spikes. Hollyhocks come in a wide variety of colors: blue, pink, purple, red, white, yellow and even black. The tall spikes are covered with blooms from top to bottom. Hollyhock leaves are large, coarse and palmate in shape.

Hollyhocks aren’t noted as being poisonous when ingested. However, the stems and leaves can cause skin irritation when the small glass-like fibers on them are touched or brushed against.
