The colored rock, found throughout Alabama Hills in the form of spherical, egg-shape, teardrop, or even as an arch, is biotite monzogranite. What’s monzogranite? It’s the final form (or fractionation) of molten rock called magma. In Alabama Hills, this rock gets its smooth, spherical appearance because it’s been weathered in uniquely even patterns since it first formed around 85 million years ago.

Beyond its storied history as a movie location, Alabama Hills presents an elemental grandeur that's breathtaking to behold in the Eastern Sierras. Woke up at around 4:30 AM to get ready and reached here by 5:30 AM. First passing the highest viewpoint (we should have stopped there for sunrise), a car before us kept running, so we followed it until stopping here.
It's been the scene for so many movies, from the early western films to Tremors, Star Wars, Bad Day at Black Rock, etc. The cowboys on horseback being chased by the “bad guys.” The rock formation were breathtaking and beautiful. The snow capped Mt. Whitney was majestic…

We are in northeast Alabama, on the Elk River, and as expected, our cats participate in our love of Alabama football! Dill thinks there is nothing better than to get cat hair on one of our BAMA shirts! :)
We didn't win the big championship this year, and our great coach, Nick Saban, is retiring, but we and the cats will still be yelling ROLL TIDE, for the college football games!

The USS Alabama. A drive by shot from I-10 South of Mobile, AL. I have passed this ship many times coming or going but never have stopped to take the tour of this battle ship. My next trip I plan to do so.
I scrambled up into the narrow passageway behind the arch in the fin of weathered rock. I was able to shoot Lone Pine Peak inside the arch as the sun started to rise and illuminate the Alabama Hills below. The moon was still visible. (I confess I made the moon a little larger.) This arch is 5 feet wide and 4 feet high.

Alabama Hills are a rocky formation on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the Owens Valley of California, near Lone Pine, California
Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, towers several thousand feet above here.
The Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, California are fantastic for setting up beautiful shots of sunsets and sunrises. I understand why so many films have been shot at this location. The Alabama Hills are excellent foreground elements, and the background is made up of the Sierra Nevada to the west and the Inyo Mountains to the east making a splended shooting environment. In this image the blue sky and clouds in the Inyo Mountains makeup the background.

Blue Hour light on Lone Pine Peak on our morning in the Alabama Hills. I didn't want to leave this image on the cutting room floor, the subtle light was too good.
This was a view from my hike going to the Mobius Arch. The rock features in the area are so amazing and it seems like around every turn is a new view to capture. I was really happy the way my new hip was working on the hike. I was walking pretty gingerly in areas with loose gravel and dirt, but I made it without any issues. The success of this hike made me feel a lot more confidant in my taking trips like this in the future.
