Richard was an average young man, who decided he wanted too serve his country, so he enlisted. Like many men from small towns Richard was very patriotic.

Dr. Jefferson was born in Northeast Texas and became the first African American woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School. She was born in 1926 when African Americans attended segregated schools. Dr. Jefferson is an example of those that rose out of the adversity of the times and still were successful.

He continued to send telegrams home to his love ones to keep them updated on his travels and current health. Western Union was the main telegraph form in small towns.

When soldiers left they got two pair of dog tags, one they would usually leave for a love one, they other they wore around their neck. Richard got his dog tags as he went away to war.

In February of 1946 he was honorable discharged where he got to return home to his loved ones.

After some experience he got qualified for different ranks. Soldier received qualification certificates so other officers could know soldiers strong points.

This book was of men and woman who served in WWII. Similar to a high school annual, this publication listed the photographs, names, service branch, and service details of service personnel from Cass County. Included in the volume are the service details of several county African American residents.

He made friends, other soldiers who were away from friends and families as well.Many of these young men came from small towns as well. So they all had common feelings and home sickness.
