Effective management of urban air quality requires stakeholders have a good understanding of the problem and solutions. A Knowledge Attitude and Practices Assessment (KAP) conducted in 2023 by USAID Clean Air Activity in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal revealed critical knowledge gaps among stakeholders. The assessment highlighted that people's perception of air pollution was often limited to what they could see (black smoke) or smell (bad odors). Moreover, they primarily associated air pollution with short-term health issues, like skin irritations and temporary breathing difficulties, while overlooking the grave long-term impacts from sustained exposure, such as ischemic heart disease and stroke. This knowledge gap has hindered comprehensive action on air quality.
In response, USAID Clean Air is actively engaging with key stakeholders who can reach various segments of society with accurate information, including journalists and health and education professionals, and youth who can serve as influential advocates for raising awareness and inspiring action. The project is also using innovative tools such as an art installation to visualize the serious impact of air pollution. Such formats help to connect data-driven facts about the dangers of air pollution with emotions, which humans require to catalyse action. An example is the installation of 1-meter-tall artificial lungs made from white HEPA filter at the gates of Nepal’s Ministry of Health. The white filter cloth turned black within a mere 2 weeks of exposure to ambient air, vividly demonstrating the detrimental effects of air pollution on human health. While awareness-raising is essential, the project is also implementing a social and behaviour change communication campaign promoting actionable solutions such as wearing masks, stopping waste burning and reducing vehicle emissions. By equipping people with practical steps and strategies, the project facilitates a transition from awareness to action. This multifaceted approach is instrumental in driving meaningful change towards cleaner air.
