HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF LEGOS. The main work space inside the New Industries building, where prisoners once manufactured everything from gloves to shoes to furniture, is now occupied by a series of floor installations crafted entirely out of Lego bricks. Titled "Trace," the pieces feature the names and faces of 176 people who have been jailed or exiled for their beliefs or political affiliations.
HONORING THE SILENCED. The installation includes books that provide biographical information on each of the individuals featured. Information will be available at www.trace.aiweiweialcatraz.org.

One of the main sections of the exhibition are numerous portraits of past and current political prisoners, done in LEGOs. Snowden and Manning are here, as well as many people held at Guantanamo and by many other countries around the world. Weiwei, showing some humility, did not include an image of himself, even though his passport was seized by the Chinese a few years ago, so he is not allowed to travel outside of his country.

In the prison cafeteria was another part of the exhibition - these are postcards, each addressed to one of the political prisoners in the LEGO hall. For the artwork, Weiwei chose the national bird of each country, then tweaked them a bit in Photoshop.
