The church of Agios Athanasios Gerakion Laconia. 12th century. Hellas. Columns, and marble used are clearly visible, probably from the nearby ancient temple of the god Ares. During the construction of some churches around the village, such as the church of Agios Athanasios, Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos, etc., marbles were also used, which obviously came from ancient temples, buildings and statue pedestals.

Long exposure shot of west coast beach (Agios Ioannis) on Lefkada island at sunset, Greece.
As always, thank you so much for your visits, comments and faves!
When you visit a Cycladic island in Greece, it's a must to find its main town, which we usually call Chora, and wander around its alleys and small streets. Most of the times those little towns are full of souvenir shops, traditional restaurants, coffee places and they absolutely offer a ton of photo opportunities. So I did the same thing in Serifos' chora and I was quite charmed by its beauty. Aside from the castle and it's breathtaking view (I am going to share that view on another pic), i particularly liked its main square. The square is surrounded by the church of Agios Ioannis, which you see at the background, the island's town hall, located on the right and 4-5 coffee shops and restaurants where you can taste various local delicacies. Fan fact about the one you see here, it's named Διθυρα, a word that made no sense to me in Greek so I had to look up what that means only to find that it's an anagram (also considered a local dialect thing) of the word Θυριδα (security box/locker). The main square with the (mostly) white buildings and their colorful windows is a pleasure for the eye, in my opinion.

We continue our course, entering the intricate urban texture of the town, where we meet an almost twin of the previous church: Agios Ioannis (Saint John) Prodromos with his precinct creating a tiny square. An opportunity to stand and try to orient yourself, and yes! Just behind the humble bell tower, we can see the much taller of the Virgin Mary. Olympos, Karpathos island, Greece.
Back at the Agios Ioannis Monastery, the sun is shining strongly now. The grounds are beautiful with little features like this.
For those of you who know the film, this is the church featured in Mama Mia! for the wedding scene at the end. It is actually the church of Agios Ioannis Kastri and is beautifully perched on top of a huge natural outcrop of rock in the Mediterranean Sea.
The east coast of Skopelos Island on a showery day. A pleasant hike from Glossa to the Church of Agios Ioannis Kastri (aka the “Mamma Mia Church”) despite the drizzle and occasional shower. The Island of Skopelos and the little chapel have come to fame after several scenes of the movie Mamma-Mia were filmed at this location.
As the day had started by raining quite heavily, once it had stopped we decided to take a walk around the airport. Despite how it sounds its actually a really nice walk around the airfield, and this is one of the hidden gems, Agios Ioannis Monastery tucked away where so few people know about it.
Kos Agios Ioannis Monastery
The Monastery of Agios Ioannis in Kos, Dodecanese: On the southern side of Kos island, at the end of the asphalt road there is the lovely Monastery of Agios Ioannis (Saint John). Only 7 km south of Kefalos, this monastery is known for its traditional architecture, as it is painted in blue and white colors. It is built on a hill above Kefalos, this monastery is surrounded by lush greenery and offers an amazing view of the sea. A large plane tree throws its shadow on the church and some wooden benches have been put around the church for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery.
The church inside is small but gives a solemn atmosphere. Beautiful icons and amazing frescoes decorate the walls, while a golden chandelier hangs from the roof. A few meters aside the church, there is an old, half-ruined bell tower. The monastery celebrates on August 29th and lots of pilgrims flock there on its feast day to pay their respects to the saint.
Europe, Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Naxos, Kinidaros, Marble quarry (cut from T)
There’s no Aegean island’s that so marked by mining and quarrying as beautiful & fascinating Naxos. In an earlier post, I showed the old logistic centre of the emery (smyrigly) mining in Stravologada industrial park here.
On display in this pic are the modern marble quarries near the village of Kinidaros in the central part of the island. Naxian marble has a special quality. It was already quarried in ancient times ( on Agios Ioannis hill in the north part of Naxos and near Apollonas).
Naxian marble (μαρμαρος =shining stone) is over 98% calcite. Other component minerals are dolomite, silicate and traces of graphite and pyrite. Calcite crystals are randomly distributed and usually transparent. This transparence gives the stone an appearance of depth and is the cause of the blue-grey shimmer of the marble, which is more or less noticeable depending on the angle of the light source. The crystals are up to 15 millimetres in diameter and it is thus one of the largest grained marbles.
This is number 26 of the Cyclades 2011 album and 11 of Ride.
Saint John Monastery
Built in 1088 by Christodoulos Latrinos, St. John Monastery (Agios Ioannis Theologos), sits high on the hill above Chora, and serves as the most important religious and cultural center on the island. It is visible from every part of Patmos.
Buildings of different ages form the Monastery, which contains 99 cells and ten chapels, as well as a library housing 890 handwritten codexes and 13,000 documents about the history of the site.
Archangelos,
Archangelos,
Also worth seeing is the fort built by the Knights of St. John between 1454 and 1476, of which only ruins have survived in addition to the 5-7 m high wall and the small chapel of Agios Ioannis inside. The Greek word “Greek όχι” (“no”) was written on the outer wall of the fort during the military dictatorship and can still be read today
On the descent to Skaros Rock from Imerovigli there is a small chapel - Agios Ioannis Katiforis ( St John's Chapel)
The walls of the Agios Ioannis Monastery are a work of art in themselves, all made with local stone and beautifully texted.
In the left part of the photo, the Holy Catholic church of Agios Ioannis the Baptist, located in Fira, is slightly visible and is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Santorini.
The Cathedral is located in the center of the city, within the Catholic quarter. The church was erected in 1823, while it was renovated and reconstructed in 1970, due to the damage it had suffered during an earthquake in 1956. The building is of baroque architecture, while its colors are a combination of gray, blue and beige
